ABSTRACT

Micro-strip antennas are the most suited antenna technology because

of their low profile, light weight and low power handling capacity but
it cannot operate over high gain. Metamaterial is an artificially
structured material that exhibits extraordinary electromagnetic
properties not available or not easily obtainable in the nature.
Metamaterial Technology is used to improve the gain and directivity
of the antenna. Novel applications of metamaterials composite
structure in antenna engineering has been considered. Compared with
the conventional materials, metamaterials exhibits some specific
features which are not found in conventional materials. Some unique
applications of these composite structures as an antenna substrate,
superstrate, feed networks, phased array antennas, ground planes,
antenna radomes and struts invisibility have been discussed.

INTRODUCTION

In the recent years electromagnetic metamaterials (MTMs) are widely

used for antenna applications. These specifically designed composite
structures have some special properties which cannot be found in
natural materials. Metamaterials are also known as Double negative
(DNG) materials, Left handed materials (LHM) etc. In 1968, the
concept of metamaterials was first published by the Russian physicist
Victor Veselago. Thirty years later, Sir John Pendry proposed
conductor geometries to form a composite medium which exhibits
effective values of negative permittivity and negative permeability.
Based on the unique properties of Metamaterials, many novel antenna
applications of these materials have been developed. The use of
metamaterials could enhance the radiated power of an antenna.
Negative permittivity and permeability of these engineered structures
can be utilized for making electrically small antenna, highly directive,
and reconfigurable antennas. These, metamaterial based antennas
have also demonstrated the improved efficiency & bandwidth
performance. Metamaterials have also been utilized to increase the
beam scanning range of antenna arrays. They antennas also find
applications to support surveillance sensors, communication links,
navigation systems, and command and control systems.

EXISTING WORK

An unloaded micro-strip patched antenna array has been proposed.

The unloaded array resonates at 5 GHz with gain of 2.59 dB and
bandwidth of 96 MHz .It has been mounted on a FR-4 substrate of
thickness 1.6mm whose relative permittivity is 4.4. Different array
configurations of Micro-strip antenna can give high gain, wide
bandwidth and improved efficiency. The distribution of voltages
among the elements of an array depends on feeding network. The
proper impedance matching throughout the corporate and series
feeding array configurations provides high efficiency Micro-strip
antenna.

DISADVANTAGE:
1. Extraneous Radiation from feeds and Junctions.
2. Surface Wave excitation.
3. Narrow Bandwidth so, it cannot be used for Wi-Max and WLAN
application.

PROPOSED METHOD

The Antenna array is loaded with a metamaterial superstrate, gain and

bandwidth reaches to 6 dB and 680 MHz, respectively. It is observed
that upon incorporation, the bandwidth widens to around 600% and
VSWR improves by approx. 1.5% and the antenna is miniaturized by
400%.The transmission line model of the composite structure has also
been developed. It is composed of a rectangle patch with a CSRR slot
and a conventional ground plane, which can provide a triple-band
characteristic covering 2.4-2.48 GHz, 3.3-3.9 GHz and 5.15-5.7 GHz.
The operational bands of this antenna can be used for WiMAX at
2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz and WLAN at 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz, and it has
omnidirectional radiation patterns, which can be the good candidate
for WiMAX and WLAN applications.

CONCLUSION

Metamaterial loaded micro-strip patch antenna array for 5 GHz Wi-

MAX applications been developed. The proposed composite structure
enhances the gain of conventional patch antenna array by 86 % and
improves the bandwidth by 60 % at no extra hardware cost. Using
transmission line analogy, the transmission line equivalent model of
the proposed structure has been developed. The performance
comparison of two designs shows that metamaterials are capable
enough to improve the performance of the antennas.
