ETHICS SPEECH

GOOD MORNING to ONE AND ALL PRESENT. SO WHAT ARE ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS? ETHICAL
CONSIDERATIONS ARE MORALLY ACCEPTED BEHAVIOURS WHICH HELPS BUSINESSES TO CONDUCT
THEIR OPERATIONS FAIRLY AND WITH DUE CONSIDERATION OF THEIR STAKEHOLDERS. LET US
UNDERSTAND THIS WITH VARIOUS CASE STUDIES.

1. LABOUR RIGHTS:

THIS IS A HARD TO BELIEVE BUT TRUE CASE OF HYUNDAI MOTORS. IN 2022 IT WAS FOUND THAT IN
ALABAMA, US THE HYUNDAI SUPPLIER FACTORY WAS USING CHILD LABOUR IN ITS PRACTICES.
INVESTIGATORS FOUND THAT CHILDREN BELOW 12 YEARS WERE FOUND WORKING IN HAZARDOUS
WORKPLACE. AS RESULT THE CONSEQUENCES WERE PUBLIC BACKLASH AND CRITICISM. THE
COMPANY INTIALLY DENIED THEIR CLAIMS HOWEVER, THEY HAD TO SURRENDER BY PROMISING TO
ENSURE ETHICAL PRACTICES IN THEIR PROCESSES.

2. ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY:

ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE THE TOP PRIORITY IN ANY COMPANY’S ETHICAL CONSIDERATION. THIS
CAN BE EXPLAINED BY WALMART’S CASE. THE COMPANY WAS ACCUSED AND FOUND GUILTY OF
IMPROPERLY DISPOSING HAZARDOUS WASTE COMPROMISING ENVIRONMENT SUSTAINABILITY.
THEY WERE SUED BY CALIFORNIA REGULARITIES OF ABOUT 7.5 MILLION DOLLARS. HOWEVER THEY
AGREED TO PAY BUT STILL POSES THEMSELVES AS AN EXAMPLE TO COMPANIES WORLDWIDE FOR
CONSIDERING THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY.

3. cultural sensitivity:

RESPECTING EVERY CULTURE SHOULD BE PRIME MOTIVE OF ANY COMPANY. On December 7,

2023, Zara launched its social media campaign “The Jacket”. The campaign was photographed by Tim
Walker and featured model Kristen McMenamy, who posed in the middle of a white room with a
messy art workspace background, SHE held a mannequin covered with thin white fabric on her
shoulder. THE CAMPAIGN WAS LAUNCHED DURING THE WAR BETWEEN ISRAEL AND GAZA WHEN A
LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE DIED IN GAZA. PEOPLE STARTED ASSOCIATING THE MANNEQUIN HELD
BY KRISTEN AS THE DEAD BODY. THEY THOUGHT IT TO BE INSENSITIVE BY THE ZARA TO LAUNCH
SUCH CAMPAIGN WHEN CHILDREN WERE DYING IN GAZA. HOWEVER EVEN AFTER ALL THIS INSTEAD
OF APOLOGIZING ZARA WAS NOT WILLING TO ACCEPT THEIR MISTAKE. ZARA IS WELL KNOWN FOR
SUCH CULTURAL INSENSITIVITY CASE SUCH AS KIDS TSHIRT HAVING JEWISH STAR AND MANY MORE.

4)ANTI CORRUPTION:

For a long time, Disney essentially ran its own little government in Florida, called the Reedy Creek
Improvement District. This meant they had a lot of control over things like building roads and
providing services around Walt Disney World. HOWEVER RECENTLY THE DISNEY WAS ACCUSED OF
PROVIDING ADDITIONAL PERKS TO REEDY CREEK EMPLOYEES LIKE FREE TICKETS AND DISCOUNTS
UNDER THE NAME OF BUYING THEIR LOYALTY.

The state OF FLORIDA also alleges that taxpayer money was being used to fund these perks, and that
Disney had failed to deliver on promises to build essential community services like hospitals and
schools. Now, there's a big political and legal fight happening between Disney and Florida. WHAT SO
EVER THE COMPANY WITH AN IMAGE LIKE DISNEY CANNOT AFFORD TO TARNISH ITS IMAGE WITH
SUCH A CASE OF UNETHICAL CONDUCT.

CONCLUSION:
ALL THE ABOVE CASES HAVE BECOME THE EXAMPLES FOR COMPANIES TO CONSIDER AND ENSURE
FAIR BUSINESS PRACTICES WITH ETHICAL CONSIDERATION WORLDWIDE. AT THE END I WOULD LIKE
TO QUOTE WARREN BUFFET THAT IT TAKES MORE THAN 20 YEARS TO BUILD A REPUTATION WHILE 5
MINUTES TO RUIN IT. IF YOU THINK LIKE THAT YOU WILL ACT DIFFERENTLY. THIS CALLS FOR
COMPANIES TO CONTINUOUSLY MONITER ETHICAL BUSINESS CONDUCT.
