Coursework: Coffee Table Design Guide

INTRODUCTION TO THE DESIGN PROCESS

THE COURSEWORK

 Background of the Problem

 The current coffee table lacks storage, is uncomfortable for use, and poses safety
risks.
 Families and individuals who use coffee tables for multiple purposes are affected.
 The lack of storage causes clutter, sharp edges pose safety concerns, and the design
does not match modern interiors.
 This issue is experienced in living rooms where coffee tables serve as multi-functional
furniture.
 A coffee table should be both aesthetic and functional while ensuring user safety and
convenience.

THE STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In our family living room, we often struggle with clutter on our current coffee table. It lacks
storage, making it difficult to keep magazines, remotes, and decorative items organized. The
table is also too low, making it uncomfortable for individuals who need to use it for working
or dining. Additionally, the sharp edges pose a safety risk, especially for young children. The
table does not match the overall aesthetic of the living space, leading to a design mismatch.
Furthermore, the material is difficult to clean and shows wear and tear easily. This creates
inconvenience and reduces the usability of the coffee table.
