EE 3004: Control Engineering(Even)

Quiz 1 (Re-exam)
August 13, 2020

1. Consider a car moving with constant velocity v0 . Assume the car is steered left. This steering
angle is considered as input to the system and denoted by the variable φ. Let (x, y) denote the
co-ordinates of point A, which is midpoint of the rear axle. The kinematics are given below in
state space form with state variables x, y and θ.

ẋ(t) = v0 cosθ(t)
ẏ(t) = v0 sinθ(t)
v0
θ̇(t) = tanφ(t)
`

Let the output be the y co-ordinate of the midpoint of front wheel axle, i.e., output c(t) =
y(t) + lsinθ(t).
(a) Linearize this system about the operating point θ = 0, φ = 0 and find a state space
representation. [3]
(b) Find the transfer function for this system. [4]
(c) Identify the scenario when the above system can have a non-minimum phase behavior and
explain briefly. [3]
2. (a) Assume the signal flow graph for a system has two forward path whose path gains are T1
and T2 . Assume ∆ is given. Suppose all the loops in the signal flow graph touch path 1
and no loop touches path 2. Find the transfer function of the above system in terms of
the given parameters if possible. [4]
(b) Find the transfer function C(s)/R(s) for the system shown in the following figure using
block diagram reduction. [6]

3. (a) For a second order system, s2 +2ζω 2 the critically damped response is faster than over-
n s+ωn
damped system. Justify [4]
Hint:Analyze the pole locations as ζ varies from 1 to values greater than 1. The response
is determined by the pole locations.
(b) For the system shown below find N1 /N2 so that the settling time for a step torque input
is 16 seconds. Take the output as angular displacement, θ as shown in the figure. [6]
