Electromagnetic Spectrum Practice

Directions: Complete the following problems using the equations and constants below. Show
your work for each problem and put a box around your final answers.

c = λν E = hν c = 3.00 x 108 m/s h = 6.63 x 10-34 J/Hz

Note: When using the equations above, your wavelength units MUST be in meters (m) and your
frequency units MUST be in hertz (Hz) or reciprocal seconds (s-1). Remember that 1 nm = 10-9 m.

1) Calculate the wavelength of violet light with a frequency of 7.50 x 1014 Hz.

2) Calculate the frequency of yellow light with a wavelength of 580 nm.

3) Calculate the wavelength of red light with a frequency of 4.60 x 1014 Hz.

4) Calculate the frequency of green light with a wavelength of 5.30 x 10-7 m.

5) The waves used by a microwave oven to cook food have a frequency of 2.45 x 109 Hz. Calculate
the energy of this type of wave.

6) A radio station has a frequency of 90.9 x 106 Hz. What is the wavelength of the waves the
station emits from its tower?

7) An x-ray has a wavelength of 5.00 nm. What is the energy of x-rays?

8) The ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn are called UV-B rays. They have a wavelength of
approximately 3.0 x 10-7 m. What is the frequency of a UV-B ray?

9) Infrared waves from the sun are what make our skin feel warm on a sunny day. If an infrared
wave has a frequency of 3.0 x 1012 Hz, what is its energy?

10)Electromagnetic waves with the highest amount of energy are called gamma rays. Gamma rays
have wavelengths of less than 1.0 x 10-11 m. Calculate the frequency and energy that
correspond with this wavelength. Are these minimum or maximum frequency and energy of a
gamma ray?
