1 (a) In the circuit shown, an ideal switch S is operated at 100 [1] 3
kHz with a duty ratio of 50%. Given that Δic is 1.6 A peak-
to-peak and I0 is 5 A dc, the peak current in S,

supplying an R-L load. It is operated at a firing angle α and
the load current is continuous. The fraction of cycle that the

connected across the load. The inductor current is assumed
to be continuous. What will be the average voltage across
the load and the average current through the diode
respectively?

(f) A 3-phase fully controlled bridge converter with [1] 3


freewheeling diode is fed from 400 V, 50 Hz AC source and
is operating at a firing angle of 60c. The load current is
assumed constant at 10 A due to high load inductance. The
input displacement factor (IDF) and the input power factor
(IPF) of the converter will be______________.

(g) A single phase fully controlled thyristor bridge ac-dc [1] 3


converter is operating at a firing angle of 25 degree, and an
overlap angle 10 degree with constant dc output current of
20A. The fundamental power factor (displacement factor) at
input ac mains is_______________.

(h) A three phase fully controlled thyristor bridge converter [1] 3


is used as line commutated inverter to feed 50 KW power at
420 V DC to a three phase 415 V(line), 50Hz as mains.
Consider DC link current to be constant. The RMS current
of the thyristor is_______________.
(i) A MOSFET rated for 10A, carries a periodic current as [1] 3
shown in figure 5. The ON state resistance of the
MOSFET is 0.15Ω. The average ON state loss in the
MOSFET is ___________.

2 A three phase bridge inverter delivers power to a resistive [10] 2


load from a 450 V dc source. For star-connected load of 10
Ω per phase, determine for both (a) 180° mode and 120°
mode,
(i) RMS value of load current
(ii) RMS value of thyristor current
(iii) Load power

3 A voltage commutated chopper has the following [10] 3


parameters:
Vs =220 V , load circuit parameters = 0.5 Ω, 2 mH, 40 V
Commutation circuit parameters:
L = 20 µH, and C = 50 µ F
Ton =800 µsec, T = 2000µs.
For constant load current of 80 A , Compute the following :
I. Effective on period.
II. Peak currents through main thyristor T1 and auxiliary
thyristor TA.
III. Turn-off times for T1 and TA.
IV. Total communication interval.
V. Capacitor voltage 150 µs after TA is triggered.
VI. Time needed to recharge the capacitor to voltage Vs .
4 Discuss different protection schemes of Thyristor with [10] 3
necessary circuit and equations.
5 Explain with necessary circuit diagram, waveform and [10] 2
equations the working principle of voltage commuted
chopper.
6 Explain with necessary circuit diagram the working principle [10] 4
of Class-B commutation (Resonant Pulse Commutation)
with necessary circuit diagram, waveforms and equations.

7 A single phase bridge inverter, fed from 230 V dc, is [10] 3


connected to load R=10 Ω and L = 0.003 H .Determine the
power delivered to load in case the inverter is operating at
50Hz with (a) square wave output (b) quasi-square wave
output with an on-period 0.5 of cycle and (c) two
symmetrically spaced pulse per half cycle with an on-period
of 0.5 of a cycle.

8 Explain the effect of source impedance of a single phase full [10] 2


converter.
9 In circuit employing class C- Commutation Vs=220V, Rs=10 [10] 3
Ω, R2= 100 Ω. Determine:-
(a) Peak value of the current through thyristors T1 and
T2.
Value of the capacitor C if each thyristor has turn-off time of
40 µs. Take the factor of safety 2.
10 Explain the operating principle of single phase dual [10] 3
converter with necessary circuit diagram, waveforms and
derivation.
11 Explain with necessary circuit diagram the working principle [10] 3
of 1800 mode of conduction for three phase inverter with
necessary circuit diagram, waveforms and equations.
12 An impulse-commutated chopper feeds inductive load [10] 3
requiring a constant current of 260 A. The source voltage is
220 V dc and the chopping frequency is 400 Hz. Turn-off
time for main thyristor is 18 µs, peak current through main
thyristor is limited to 1.8 times the constant load current.
Taking a factor of safety 2 for main thyristor, calculate the
values of
(a) Commutating components C and L and
(b) The minimum and maximum output voltage.
13 For a single-phase full bridge inverter, Vs=230V dc, T=1 ms. [10] 2
The load consists of RLC in series with R=1Ω, ωL= 6Ω and
Xc= 7 Ω.
(a) Sketch the waveform for load voltage v0,

Indicate the devices under conduction during
different intervals of one cycle.
(b) Find the power delivered to the load due to
fundamental component.
Check whether forced commutation is required or not. Take
