The toy that I have held onto all these years is a Teddy Bear. I got it as a new born
present, and it has survived almost 11 years with me and that’s a lot of years. I do
not know why, but I named her Twitchy and have stuck with it. I also do not know
why I was so attracted to it. Just a stuffed teddy bear, but I think little kids stick with
stuffed animals because they somehow make feel comfortable to lie on and hold.
My Twitchy is always there to listen to my stories and dreams. And the best part is
it will never tell anyone.

Subject : Regarding the increase of robberies and thefts in my area.
Dear Sir,
I would like to seek the courtesy of your newspaper to publish this letter on the
above subject matter. This will help to draw the attention of the concerned authori-
ties towards the matter.
There are frequent incidences of snatching, burglary and theft. In addition to
this, there were incidences of car lifting also. Last Sunday, armed thieves broke out
into the house of our neighbourhood. Everybody is afraid of this situation. The in-
creasing number of thefts depicts the picture of complete lawlessness.
The concerned authorities should look into the matter and arrest the thieves as
soon as possible. Your efforts in this regard would be much appreciated by one
and all.
Your truly,
Santhosh.

Dear Grandma,
I hope this letter finds you in the best health. Grandma, I thank you very much
for the bicycle you sent me on my birthday. In fact, I received many presents but
yours was the best. As I did not have a bicycle, I was planning to buy one. The
bicycle sent by you is really very beautiful and has been admired by all. It will help
me to go school on my own. It will always remind me of your love for me.
We all missed you on my birthday. I once again thank you for sending me the
most cherished present on my birthday.
Yours lovely,
Dolly.

3. Rose - Rose grows from stem cuttings. The stem cuttings
when put into moist soil develop roots and grow into
new plants.
4. Wheat - Wheat grows from cotyledon.
5. Sugarcane - Sugarcane grows from stem cuttings. When they
are put into moist soil, develop roots and grow into new
plants.
D. 1. The reproduction of plants is done in the following types.
a. Vegetative reproduction b. Reproduction through stem
c. Reproduction through leaves d. Reproduction through spores
2. All seeds do not grow into new plants because of the following reasons.
i) Some seeds are not fully developed when they get seperated from
parent plants.
ii) Some seeds are eaten up by birds or animals.
iii) Some seeds are destroyed by strong winds and heavy rains.
iv) Some seeds do not get enough air, water or soil for germination.
3. The process by which a seed develops into a seedling is called germination.
The conditions needed for germination are right amount of air, water and
sunlight.
i) Seeds need air to germinate ii) Seeds need water to germinate
iii) Seeds need warmth to germinate
4. The process by which seeds are scattered away from the mother plant is
called dispersal. Since plants cannot move from one place to another, seeds
are dispersed by wind, water, animals or explosion of fruits. These are
known as agents of dispersal. The different ways of seed dispersal are as
follows:
i) Dispersal by wind ii) Dispersal by water
iii) Dispersal by birds or animals iv) Dispersal by explosion
Hots Question
All seeds require air, water and warmth for proper germination. The wrapped
seeds with moist cotton in a refrigerator will not allow the seeds to get sufficient
air. So, they are not sprouted as the seeds cannot germinate without proper
water, air and warmth.

2. Green plants are called producers because they prepare their own food by
photosynthesis.
3. The plants which eat insects by dissolving them in the digestive juices are
called insectivorous plants.
Ex:- Bladderwort and Butterwort.
4. In nature, consumers have a variety of food to choose from. One type of food
may be eaten by more than one type of animal e.g. grass is eaten by many
herbivores. Similarly rabbit may be eaten by many carnivores.
Thus, various food chains are interlinked with each other in nature. Such
interlinked and interdependent food chains form a food web.
5. Some plants derive nutrition from other living plants. Such plants are called
parasitic plants. Examples are cuscuta and orchids.
Hots Question
1. Mushrooms feed on and obtain nutrition from dead and decaying plants, as
they can’t prepare food through photosynthesis. They are saprophytes.

B. 1. Freezing - Bacteria need warmth to grow. If food is frozen,
bacteria are unable to grow. Many poultry products like
meat, fish and milk, fruits, vegetables can be preserved
by this method.
2. Drying - Drying is the oldest method of preserving food.Foodstuff
such as papad, potato chips, grains etc is dried in the
sun, ovens or dryers to ensure that all their moisture is
removed.
Empowering: 5 5
3. Pasteurization - It is one of the most effective ways to preserve food.
In this method, food items like milk, are heated to high
temperature to kill the germs present in it. Then they
are immediately cooled and packed in sterilized
containers. This helps in stopping the further
multiplication of bacteria.
4. Pickling - Pickling is a process of preserving foodstuff in edible
oils with salt and spices. Food like mango, lemon,
chillies, cauliflower etc. are preserved by this method.
Before making pickles, we need to remove the water
content of the foodstuff by drying it in the sun.
C. 1. To avoid the spoilage of food, proper care of the foodstuff should be taken.
Food preservation helps to prevent food spoilage.
2. Canning preserves food for a long time. Jars of food are immersed in 2-3
inches of water, in a special pressure cooker. The jars are then heated to a
high temperature to kill bacteria and fungi. Then preservatives are added.
Once the air is removed, the cans are sealed.
3. Aerated soft drinks like colas are preserved by removing oxygen and
dissolving carbon dioxide in them under pressure. This process is called
carbonating.
4. A diet that contains all the nutrients in sufficient quantity along with an
adequate amount of water and roughage, is called a balanced diet.
5. Certain non-communicable diseases are caused due to the deficiency of
a particular nutrient. Such diseases are called deficiency diseases.

3. Bats have the ability to give out and receive high pitched sounds called
ultrasonic. They catch their prey by echo-location. Whales and dolphins also
find their prey in water by echo-location.
4. Animals like the polar bear, snakes, lizards etc., sleep throughout the cold
winter months. Their sleep is called hibernation.
5. Nocturnal animals not only have good eyesight and hearing but also a good
sense of touch. The whiskers on the face of cat, sensory organs along a line
through head and trunk of fish and fine hair on the wings of insects are the
senses to help nocturnal animals to feel and hunt their pray.
