ABSTRACT

The study investigates the effects of social media on the academic performance of

grade 11 Galilee of Colegio San Jose de Alaminos. With the continued evolution of

technology, where most likely everywhere, students can easily communicate and share

information, during school days a lot of students rely on social media apps because it's easy

to access. We conducted an interview on Grade 11 Galilee and asking them a few questions

about how social media affects their academic performance. The results revealed that the

students get less productive on their school work that causes them to have a lot of

workloads. Social media also affects their mental health when they get out of control due to

social media addiction; social media has a huge impact on their academic performance. The

findings of this study are that students should balance their usage of social media with their

academic obligations. Although Facebook and YouTube have uses on their academic

performance too, they can also be easily distracted by them. Talking about the effects of

social media can create a positive atmosphere that promotes education first. When used

properly, technology can improve social connections and education

Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKROUND

Introduction

In this era of advanced technology, social media has transformed the way people

communicate and share information. Its integration into various aspects of daily life,

including education, has led to an ongoing debate about its influence on students’

academic performance. But, as it stands, technology, like two sides of a coin, has both

positive and negative aspects. It helps people become more informed, enlightened, and

up-to-date on world events. Technology introduces people to a better way of doing

things.

Moreover, social media usage is one of the most common activities among

children, adolescents, and emerging adults nowadays because of social media

applications such as Facebook, YouTube, and many others. It has been shown to have

many effects on an individual. Social media provides today's youth with a portal for

entertainment and communication, and it is quickly becoming one of the primary

platforms for accessing information and news. This aggressive adoption of social media

among the younger generation could be attributed to their current knowledge of and

comfort with the latest technology, as well as the easy accessibility to these social

networking tools. (Vorderer, 2016). For instance, they can access social media from their

phones at any time and from any location. This encourages them to use social media for

more than just receiving and retrieving information.

In addition, Academic excellence or achievement is important in an individual's

placement, whether in academic institutions or a job. As a result, many people are

concerned about how they can improve their academic performance. The emphasis on

academic excellence, which is also prevalent globally, has prompted many studies into

1
the conditions that foster it. Academic achievement will always play a role in predicting

one's life success, as well as academic placement in schools to higher education

institutions and one's level of employability in one's career. (Kyoshaba, 2009)

Social media usage and the academic performance of students have a direct

relationship. However, the darker side of technological evolution has resulted in

quandaries such as the loss of real-life values, particularly among students, who

constitute the majority of users interacting through the use of social networking sites.

Online social networking sites are designed to foster and reflect social connections

among people who share common interests or activities. With so many social networking

sites available on the internet, students are tempted to forego homework and reading

time in favor of chatting with friends online. Many students are now addicted to the

current online craze, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Hence, Social media has been a major stay in the minds of students and the

general public in recent years, resulting in a slew of drastic measures taken by students,

teachers, and even educational administrators. It is therefore important that we explore

some of the current issues affecting students' academic performance as a result of

social media. Students at all levels of education are now diverting their attention away

from their studies as a result of the opportunities provided by social media. The

researchers want to find the answer regarding this topic because they believe that it is

very important for the students. The researchers also believe that through this research

they can make their fellow students aware of their situation and direct them on the right

things and actions to do in improving their study habits and performance in school.

2
Background of the study

Though social media, as the name suggests, is expected to keep people

connected, probably this social connection is only superficial, and not adequately deep

and meaningful to help individuals feel emotionally attached to others. The psychological

effects of social media on student life need to be studied in more depth to see whether

social media really acts as a social support for students and whether students can use

social media to cope with negative emotions and develop positive feelings or not. In

other words, knowledge of the potential effects of the growing use of social media on

students’ emotional well-being can bridge the gap between the alleged promises of

social media and what it actually has to offer to students in terms of self-concept, self-

respect, social role, and coping strategies (for stress, anxiety, etc.). Past studies have

found that students who spend more time on social media sites are likely to demonstrate

poor academic performance. This is because they spend time chatting online and

making friends on social media sites instead of reading books. This has a negative effect

on their academic performance (Owusu-Acheaw and Larson, 2015, Abbas et al., 2019).

Therefore, it is important to determine the duration of time that they spend on social

media sites and the proportion of time that is spent on social media sites for academic

purposes.

Excessive usage of social media has not yet been termed a mental disorder,

although the term social media addiction is in vogue. Social media on a general platform

has been shown to assemble information into learning and research, use reduced time

to provide clear communication and produce access to required information. It facilitates

generation of ideas, resource exchange (notes and lectures), provides a clear insight of

concepts and improves student engagement in classrooms. It is useful in enhancing

collaborations, professional development and academic research on the contrary, social

media can also reduce cognition and enhance academic distraction which can lead to

3
poor performance in academic engagements. Psychological issues such as depression,

anxiety, sleep disorders or exposure to health risks such as smoking and alcoholism

may follow poor academic outcomes (National Library of Medicine).

The study that we conducted is there to determine the correlation between social

media usage and academic performance with a standard questionnaire of Grade 11

Galilee, which have given us an insight about the impact of social media on students

education and to determine the correlation between the social media addiction score and

the academic performance of Grade 11 Galilee.

Statement of the Problem

•In the new era where people depends more on digital world while doing necessary task

such as selling, buying, and browsing the digital world of social media to be productive,

on the other hand, the students use social media as a medium for academic purposes,

especially in researching for lessons. But it has it’s own downside and can also serve as

a distraction from the students academic performance.

•Social media has a great contribution when it comes to the students need for

information that can help on their education, but social media, as ma medium can have

either negative or positive impact on students mind, it can help to gather information that

are needed in fields such as articles, research and history, while being a great help, it

can also cause mental illness such as depression, anxiety and stress, which can greatly

affect a students attention span during lectures and class hours

•As time pass by the academic performance of students gradually decrease and

students got consumed by technology and social media, in our world today, people,

4
especially the students, have been consumed by social media to the point of forgetting

about the education that they have to finish.

Significance of the Study

The result of the study benefited the following:

1.5rdc. Teachers. The results of this study helped the teachers to understand what has

to be done for their class in order for them to pay attention to their lessons and lectures,

by doing so, it will be less stressful for them.

2. Students. The results of this study can make the students to be aware of the things

that involves social media, which in turn helps them to navigate the uncharted side of

social media

3. Parents. If it had negative effects on their child, parents could decide on how much

screen time their child should get.

4. School Administrators - non-teaching professionals who managed the day-to-day

operations of a school or school district.

5. Future Researchers. This study served as a reference for the future research to be

conducted on the same problem.

Scope of the study

This research aimed to know the effects of social media on the academic

performance of Grade 11 Galilee of colegio San Jose de Alaminos. The respondents

was 7 students from Grade 11 Galilee. This shows how the students use social media

properly on their academic performances in Colegio San Jose de Alaminos.

5
Definition of terms

For clearly understand of this study, the following terms were defined:

Social media- it is an accessible tool that everyone uses for education or for their own

private purposes

Academic performance- it is an educational goal that plays a role for the student

education life

Coping strategies- type of strategies that usually coping with something that is heavy or

usually having stress and anxiety.

Theoretical Framework

The Social Media Impact Theory, developed by Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad and

published in his 2023 edition by "Port Elizabeth Bay Book Publishing, Special Edition,"

delves into the profound and multifaceted effects of social media on individual behavior,

societal norms, and cultural dynamics. Since beginning his research in 2016, Rachmad

has sought to unpack the ways in which social media platforms not only distribute

information but also shape human interactions, influence public opinion, and alter

traditional communication practices. This theory emerges from the recognition that social

media is not merely a set of digital platforms for social interaction, but a transformative

cultural force that has redefined how information is created, shared, and consumed. The

ubiquity of social media has led to significant shifts in everything from how individuals

perceive themselves and others to how movements are mobilized and how businesses

operate.

REVIIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents local and foreign studies related to the research

RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Literature

According to Sourabh S. (2022) ‘The advent of technology in education has seen

a revolutionary change in the teaching–learning process. Social media is one such

invention which has a major impact on students’ academic performance. This research

analyzed the impact of social media on the academic performance of extraversion and

introversion personality students. Further, the comparative study between these two

personalities will be analyzed on education level (postgraduate and undergraduate) and

gender (male and female). The research was initiated by identifying the factors of social

media impacting students’ academic performance. Thereafter, the scale was developed,

validated and tested for reliability in the Indian context. Data were collected from 408

students segregated into 202 males and 206 females. Two hundred and thirty-four

students are enrolled in postgraduation courses, whereas 174 are registered in the

undergraduate program. One-way ANOVA has been employed to compare the

extraversion and introversion students of different education levels and gender. A

significant difference is identified between extraversion and introversion students for the

impact of social media on their academic performance ‘

9
The widespread availability of information on the Internet, facilitated by online

libraries and social media, has reduced students’ reliance on physical libraries. While

Gbemi-Ogunleye (2016) acknowledges the potential academic benefits of libraries,

social media, a subset of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has

become integral to education. Platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube play a

significant role in disseminating information, especially during the COVID-19 era.

IJEDICT (2021). However, the prevalence of fake information on these platforms raises

concerns about their use for academic purposes. Despite this, certain platforms such as

Twitter chats, Pinterest, Google Classroom, academic blogs, Facebook groups, and

Instagram accounts contribute positively to students’ academic development. Yet, the

broader presence of non-academic social media platforms coexists with these

educational tools, emphasizing the need for careful discernment. For example, YouTube

offers educational tutorial videos, while Facebook and Instagram serve as avenues for

sharing academic insights and seeking research assistance.

Local Literature

According to Tus.J (2021) Students with poor self-control were found to have the

most harmful effects from smartphone use on their academic performance; in terms of

demographics, claim that gender and field of study can be used to predict

Addiction. According to their evaluation of the literature, male and humanities students

Are more vulnerable to smartphone addiction. However, some research suggests that

the surveys used to generate these links may

Be incorrect, resulting in an estimate of actual usage. Statistics have shown that there

was a spike in social media usage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aside from easing

10
the loneliness felt by individuals due to the pandemic, social media has also been used

for educational purposes (Greenhow & Chapman, 2020).

This situation urged policymakers, deans, and leaders of education sectors

worldwide to come up with and implement learning alternatives apart from the

accustomed classroom setting of the education system (Sobaih et al., 2020) that is, to

have a drastic shift of conducting classes from traditional face-to-face learning to online

learning (Nadeak, 2020). As a result, students have a high dependence on smart mobile

phones as they utilize them for both education and societal activities at the present time

(Agarwal & Alrowaili, 2020).

Implementation of online learning requires devices such as smartphones,

tablets, or laptops. Virtual classes can be held through Google Classroom, Canvas

Instructure, and so on. Moreover, online learning can be conducted through diverse

social media platforms (Nadeak, 2020). With this, various academic institutions invested

on online platforms for formal education to continue despite the pandemic (Mishra et al.,

2020). Universities and other schools in the Philippines have also considered using

Facebook as a supplementary medium for distance learning, especially because a great

number of students in the country use the said application (Toquero & Talidong, 2020).

In an academic setting, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Youtube are some of the platforms

that are most commonly used for learning purposes (Sobaih et al., 2020). Platforms like

Facebook and allow users to exchange messages in the form of texts, audios, videos,

and to create group chats (Agarwal & Alrowaili, 2020; Mishra et al., 2020). Meanwhile,

Youtube allows both teachers and students to upload and view supplementary

educational videos.

Advances in information and communication technologies (ICT), such as

smartphones and tablets, have provided further motivation for using social media

(Oguguo et al., 2020). Social media has permeated almost every sector of human life. It

11
has become a common practice for people to spend significant time using these

networks due to their speed and durability. This has led to social media changing the

public discourse and setting trends and agendas across various industries, including

politics, education, technology, and entertainment. Individuals need to stay informed and

connected with modern society's latest news and trends. However, social media use is

primarily dominated by younger generations (Oguguo et al., 2020).

Foreign Studies

According to Malakeh Z.M (2021) "Social media addiction became a serious

concern that has received more attention from the public health sector due to its

addictive features and its correlated psychological consequences. Thus, this study

aimed to analyze the direct effect of SMA on academic performance, and the indirect

effects on psychological reactions among university students in Jordan. A random

survey in two universities was conducted in a sample of 510 university students; 31.4%

were males and 68.6% were females. Their average age was 21.38 years (SD = 2.12).

To test and validate the research model, advanced data analysis (Structural Equation

Modelling-Partial Least Squares [SEM-PLS]) was applied in this research.

Findings revealed that social media addiction had an indirect effect on academic

performance, however; it has a direct impact on students’ stress and anxiety levels. The

stress could influence anxiety levels, which could directly affect students’ academic

performance. Further, students’ stress levels had a direct effect on anxiety, which could

result in depression. Given the importance of social media addiction and its potentially

substantive effects on students’ psychological reactions and impact of these reactions

on academic performance, similar studies are recommended in other universities various

fields to obtain a more conclusive result"

12
According to A. sigh (2023). Nowadays, in the world of connecting learning, the

impact of social media on education is becoming a driving factor. The world is becoming

smaller, and by the use of technology such as social media, the way we get an

education is changing.

Social media and education can complement one another if used effectively. Social

media is continually developing new educational possibilities for students. Social media

has many positive effects on education. But the same has some negative effects.

Social media has become a vital part of a student’s social life. It is now regarded

as a learning platform that enhances student engagement and capabilities in many

schools. These platforms offer school children the opportunity to connect, get in touch,

access information and research.

Social media is the strongest medium of communication which helps people to

connect from far places. Social media’s acceptance in daily life is one of the driving

forces behind these depending prospects and how social media is changing education.

Local Studies

According by Caratiquit KD, Caratiquit LJC (2023) using Partial Least Squares-

Structural Equation Modeling with WarpPLS, this study examines the indirect effect of

the relationship between learners' social media addiction and academic achievement in

distance learning as mediated by academic procrastination.

The study participants were 223 Filipino students at a secondary school in

Cagayan, Philippines, who were chosen using convenience sampling. Sample sizes

were calculated using the inverse square root and gamma-exponential methods. The

findings indicated a positive and significant relationship between social media addiction

and academic procrastination. There is also a negative and significant relationship

between academic procrastination and learners' academic achievement.

13
In terms of the indirect effects of the mediation model, the relationship between

social media addiction and academic achievement is fully mediated by academic

procrastination. This indicates that academic procrastination substantially impacts the

strength of the correlation between social media addiction and academic achievement.

The findings of the undertaking were discussed regarding their implications for

institutions and future research.

According to Almojuela P.A,antiquita S, Reyes C, Soro C, pancubila M,Catibag

R.(2019)This generation is called “Social Media Dependent”. Technology nowadays is

really helpful to easily access everything we need most especially in communicating.

Most people want to be connected in a group that is very close to them but because of

the distance barrier, they are not able to see each other personally. One of the big help

of social media is they feel like they are not far from each other. Using video chatting,

voice recording, sending pictures and group chatting, they can accessibly connect to

their loved ones in just one click. Social Media applications will never be out of the trend

for this is known as the bridge of communication, interaction, and self-expression.

Today, students hooked with the social media jeopardize their learning and loss of

memory to remember the lessons in school.

Spending more time in social media than reviewing the topics that a student has

learned at school may cause them to inculcate bad habits and poor grades, leading

them to feel inadequate to reach their goals to have a better career in the future.

The researchers used the descriptive research design that describes the current

problem of the ABM students in terms of the effects of social media on the academic

performance of students. According to gender, female respondents got 66% percent with

the highest rank compared to male respondents with 34%. Based on the effects of social

media on the academic performance of the students, some of the respondents answered

that social media have negative effects on their academic performance. The outcomes

14
are evident. The results presented in this research indicate that the use of social media

can affect the academic performance of the students. If the students overuse social

media, it will give them bad effects based on proven studies. Based on the study of New

Reader’s Digest, new research suggests that heavy social media use might be

correlated to lower self-control, which marketing experts believe could lead to higher

spending. “Ultimately, the way you counteract this is by raising your self-awareness,”

Columbia University Professor Keith Wilcox told TODAY. “It’s not about don’t spend time

on Facebook, but just be aware of what it might be doing to you”.

15
Synthesis

In this chapter presenting the local and foreign literature and studies discussing the

effects of social media to the academic performance of students.

According to all authors here, social media can affect your academic performance

in school, it can also affect your lives as a student if you are spending too much time in

social media you can’t focus in your real life, you can’t focus in your studies and you

can’t manage your time.

Additionally, according to them social media have positive and negative effects but

there are more negative effects, not only in your studies but also your mental health,

sleep deprivation, and lives as a student is affected.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter focused on the research methodologies which the researchers used

in the study. Included in this part were the discussions of Research Design, Research

Participants, Method of Data Collection, Data Analysis, Trustworthiness, Ethical

Consideration, and Role of the Researchers.

Research Design

The type of research design that was used in this study was a form of Qualitative

Research Design, which helped the researchers gather information that was considered

subjective and was primarily based on the answers of the respondents.

Qualitative Research Design usually obtains data through open-ended questions

and conversational communication. This study used the Phenomenological

Methodology, wherein in-depth interviews were conducted with the participants to gather

information that primarily came from their subjective experiences with the topic and the

questions that were prepared for them.

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted in the Academic Year 2024-2025 at Colegio San Jose

De Alaminos, located in Poblacion, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.

Total Papulation

17
This study was conducted in the Academic Year 2024-2025 at Colegio San Jose

De Alaminos, located in Poblacion, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.

Method of Data Collection

To gather data vital to this study, an Interview is used as a method of getting the

answers and information through Face to Face. The interview guide questionnaires are

provided to the participants. It is containing questions regarding the experience of the

respondents, strategies that they are using, and problems that they are encountering

while they are using social media.

1. Interview

Interviews are conducted with Grade 11 students of Colegio San Jose de Alaminos

all answers to the respondents’ interview and their opinion are recorded with an

audio recorder. The respondents were interviewed through Messenger video call and

the answers are transcribed to list the results of this study.

2. Sampling Procedure

The researchers used Purposive Sampling Method Sampling which primarily focused on

one criterion. The qualification for the respondents is that he/she must be a Grade 11

galilee studying at Colegio San Jose De Alaminos from Academic year 2024-2025.

Data Analysis

Data analysis was the most crucial part of this research, as it summarized the

collected data. It involved the interpretation of data gathered through analytical and

logical reasoning to determine patterns, relationships, or trends.

While data analysis in qualitative research could include statistical procedures, it

was often an ongoing iterative process, where data was continuously collected and

analyzed simultaneously. Researchers generally analyzed for patterns in observations

throughout the entire data collection phase

. For this study, Colaizzi’s data analysis method was used. This 7-step method

required the researchers to return to the participants to confirm and validate their

responses. Colaizzi’s 7-Step Method

1. Transcribe & Familiarize: Each transcript was read multiple times to gain a

general understanding of the data.

2. Extract Significant Statements: Important statements related to the

phenomenon under study were identified and marked.

3. Formulate Meanings: The meanings of these statements were interpreted.

4. Cluster Themes: The meanings found in the data were categorized into

common themes.

5. Create Exhaustive Description: A detailed description of the phenomenon

studied was written.

19
6. Produce Fundamental Structure: A statement describing the basic structure of

the phenomenon was developed.

7. Validate Findings: The findings were presented to the participants to verify

their accuracy.

The data from this study were collected and analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978)

descriptive phenomenological method, which allowed the researchers to interpret

important themes and meanings through rigorous analysis to formulate comprehensive

results.

Ethical considerations

In conducting this study, the researchers ensured that all information was

accurate and that no data was fabricated, misrepresented, or misleading. The consent

and approval of the participants were obtained before their involvement in the study. The

protection and safety of the participants were ensured, and their names remained

confidential to prevent any potential harm. Participants also had the freedom to decline

or withdraw from the study at any stage if they wished to do so. For confidentiality, the

participants were informed beforehand that their information would remain strictly

confidential. The researchers had no intention of deceiving or causing harm to the

participants. Additionally, any type of communication related to this study was conducted

with honesty, and any misinformation or irrelevant data was ignored. The presentation of

primary data findings in a biased or misleading manner was strictly avoided. The

purpose of this section was to ensure that this research contributed useful knowledge for

future researchers who may conduct similar studies.

20
Role of the Researchers

Qualitative researchers examine how people learn, interpret, and make sense of

themselves, others, and their daily lives. This means that researchers study subjects in

their natural settings and attempt to interpret phenomena based on the meanings people

assign to them. In this study, the participants shared their real-life experiences related to

the research topic and questions.

Since individuals have different perspectives and answers, the role of the researchers

was to extract, analyze, and present their responses accurately through interviews and

analysis.

Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge or the use of existing

knowledge in a new and creative way to generate fresh insights, methodologies, and

understanding. Through this study, the researchers aimed to contribute new knowledge

that could benefit future generations and researchers working on similar topics.

Additionally, existing studies on related topics were used as references to enhance the

understanding and validity of this research.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Overview

The focus of this chapter was on the collection and analysis of descriptive data

from the interviews conducted with Grade 11 Galilee students at Colegio San Jose de

Alaminos. The main objective of this study is to explore the opinions of students

regarding the use of social media and the potential effects it has on their academic

performance and study habits. The data were gathered through interviews, and the

resulting information was analyzed using Collaizi’s (1978) descriptive phenomenological

method. The findings was presented with a detailed breakdown through tables to clarify

the data and enhance understanding.

The following research questions were addressed:

"What are the effects of social media usage on the academic performance and

study habits of Grade 11 students at Colegio San Jose de Alaminos?"

A. How does students’ study habit change ever since the social media started?

B. Is it true that students can get mental illness through social media, and it can

impact our academic performance?

C. What are the possible effect of social media on the academic performance of

students?

22
Participants Demographics

The participants of this study were Grade 11 Galilee students that were enrolled in

Colegio San Jose de Alaminos. The sample consisted of both male and female students

aged 16-17 years, representing a diverse cross-section of academic backgrounds and

study habits. The students were selected based on their familiarity with and usage of

social media platforms, ensuring that all participants had regular engagement with

platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. This sample represents a

typical group of students in a modern academic setting where social media use is

widespread.

Data Analysis Following Collaizi’s Descriptive Phenomenological Approach

Data from the interviews were analyzed using Collaizi’s (1978) descriptive

phenomenological method. This method was chosen because it allows for the extraction

of meaningful insights from participants' experiences and provides a framework for

organizing those insights into significant themes. The process involved the following

steps:

1. Reading through the data: Transcriptions of the interviews were read multiple

times to ensure full understanding of the participants’ responses.

2. Extracting significant statements: Key phrases or comments that provided

insight into the effects of social media on students' academic performance and

study habits were highlighted.

23
3. Formulation of meanings: The significant statements were then grouped and

formulated into clear, coherent meanings.

4. Clustering themes: These formulated meanings were clustered into themes that

best represented the common experiences and perspectives of the participants.

5. Interpretation of findings: Finally, the identified themes were interpreted and

related to the research questions, with a focus on understanding the overall

effects of social media on academic performance.

Extraction of Significant Themes

From the interview data, several significant themes emerged, which were organized into

key areas of focus:

1. Impact on Study Habits:

Many students reported that their study habits had changed since the advent of

social media. For example, some students found it difficult to focus on their

studies because of frequent distractions from social media notifications. Others

mentioned that they often used social media during breaks between study

sessions, which helped them feel more relaxed and connected.

2. Mental Health Concerns:

A recurring theme in the interviews was the potential link between social media

use and mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. Several students

noted that the pressure to maintain a certain image online or to keep up with the

constant flow of information on social media contributed to stress, which, in turn,

affected their concentration and academic performance.

3. Positive Effects of Social Media on Learning:

Some students highlighted the positive aspects of social media, including the use

24
of educational content and study groups on platforms like Facebook and

YouTube. They found that social media could be an effective tool for learning,

helping them access resources, tutorials, and peer support.

4. Distraction and Procrastination:

Many students admitted to using social media as a form of procrastination,

delaying their study time by scrolling through feeds or chatting with friends. This

led to feelings of guilt and regret as they found themselves falling behind on their

academic tasks.

Formation of Formulated Meanings

Based on the significant themes extracted, the following formulated meanings were

developed:

1. Social Media as a Double-Edged Sword:

Social media has both positive and negative effects on students' study habits.

While it can provide helpful educational resources and social connections, it also

serves as a major source of distraction. The students’ ability to manage their time

and avoid procrastination often determines whether the impact of social media is

beneficial or harmful.

2. Link Between Mental Health and Academic Performance:

The data suggest a strong correlation between social media usage, mental

health issues, and academic performance. Students who experience heightened

stress, anxiety, or depression due to social media use report a decrease in their

ability to concentrate and perform well in their studies.

3. The Need for Self-Regulation and Awareness:

A recurring suggestion among students was the need for better self-regulation

25
and time management when it comes to social media use. Those who set limits

on their social media time or used it as a tool for educational purposes tended to

experience fewer negative effects on their academic performance.

I. Impact of Social Media on Study Habits

In the interview, Participant A explains that social media has disrupted her study habits

due to constant distractions from notifications and various platforms. She emphasized

the need to stay focused and use social media in moderation to prevent procrastination

and avoid becoming more isolated and introverted." She stated,

"For me, yes because nowadays people mostly kids spend a lot of time using

gadgets that can cause numerous health problems like headaches and mental issues

that causes poor academic performance."

Participant A also shared a technique on how to reduce negative impact of social

media. She reported,

"I think we can help to reduce negative impact of too much screen time especially

for kids by creating a limit of screen time, encourage physical activities and outdoor play,

support interests and hobbies that don't involve screens”

Participant B has noticed that her study habits have changed due to more social

media use. To manage this, they set limits on social media, follow a schedule, keep her

phone out of sight while studying, use social media purposefully, and regularly assess

their approach. Her goal is to effectively balance their academic and social media

activities. She stated,

. “My study habits have changed because my time spent reading and reviewing lessons

has decreased while my time spent on cell phones has increased due to social media”

26
Participant B, also shared her experience on how she balanced her time on social

media while studying. She reported

“Balancing social media and studying is challenging but workable. Set time limits

for social media, create a schedule, prioritize study, and use social media mindfully. I

can also use it to support my studies. Stay focused by putting my phone away when I

needed, and regularly review my habits to ensure they’re effective. This method helps us

to manage both academics and online activities.”

Participant C notes that as social media gained popularity, they found their attention

drawn more to apps like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The entertainment these

platforms provided often distracted them from other activities. She reported

"When social media started of course my habits are more focused more on social media

because of course we have different kinds of applications such as Instagram, Facebook,

TikTok I can entertain myself more.”

Participant D acknowledge that social media can be a distraction and make focusing

on homework difficult. Despite this, she believed she handle her time well by balancing

studies with other activities and minimizing social media distractions. She stated

“I became less productive to do some of my home works, since social media

became more distractive. Based on my performances, I believe it’s a no. I do not let

social media to use my time in studying since i always learn how to manage my time well

with school works and playing."

Participant E mentions that his study habits have shifted significantly since he began

using social media more frequently. He found his self-relying too heavily on social media

for research, which has affected how they use other research methods. According to him

27
"My study habit has changed a lot ever since i started to rely more on social

media, it has changed how I find answers on my researches especially relying too much

on them.

Participant F shares that his study habits changed a lot with the rise of social media,

particularly during high school and the quarantine period. He noticed his spending more

time on social media, which distracted him from his schoolwork. Which caused him to

rely on social media for answers and miss out on key lessons. He stated

"My study habit has changed a lot since the social media has started, throughout

my high school days especially on quarantine made me have more time to focus on

what's in social media and not on my modules. I've only relied on the answers that came

from the social media as well which led me to not learn some previous lessons."

Participant G reflects that his study sessions were more focused before social media

became popular. Now, with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, he found it

easier to get distracted while studying. He reported,

“Before the rise of social media, study sessions were often more focused, with

fewer distractions. However, with the advent of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and

Twitter, it’s easier to get distracted while studying"

II. Influence of Social Media on Mental Health and Academic Engagement

According to participant A that they agree that social is affecting some people's metal

health but it contributes to their mental. She stated,

. "Yes, I do think it’s true that for some people, social media use may contribute to

mental health problems, which will most likely have an impact on academic

achievements and the people around you. Stress, anxiety, and depression can rise as a

result of cyberbullying, etc. These mental health issues might make it difficult for

students to concentrate, participate in class, or finish homework.”

According to participant B, he said that he is agreeing that mental health has an

impact on today's generation especially kids since they said that children of today spend

too much time on there’s gadgets to the point that it has impact to their academics on

school. She reported

"For me, yes because nowadays people mostly kids spend a lot of time using

gadgets that can cause numerous health problems like headaches and mental issues

that causes poor academic performances. I think we can help to reduce negative impact

of too much screen time especially for kids by creating a limit of screen time, encourage

physical activities and outdoor play, support interests and hobbies that don't involve

screens.”

According to participant C They don’t agree that social media is a cause of mental

illness but it has an impact, it can be positive or negative because of the influence of “for

you page” and they can learn and discover new things that is happening around social

media.

"Not mental illness but it has an impact, whether positive or negative. Because in

"Yes, becoming more focus on social media will only teach us to become less

touch with the reality. And because of the distractions social media gives us, we are

becoming more inactive in doing school works."

According to participant E She’s agreeing that mental health is affected to her usages

on social media and it's a distraction for her and to others and sometimes they speed too

much on social media or gets distracted of how they always use social media. She

stated

"Yes, by spending much in social media, we are more on focused what's

beneath them how our own life and academics, it distracted teenagers like me,

sometimes they effected our mental health by what we are suppose not to learn about

just yet.”

According to participant F "Yes, Teenagers like me often isolate themselves onto

communicating with others and get themselves busy on focusing through social media,

especially lack of motivation on studying and making projects for their academic

performances."

According to participant G Social media can affect his mental illness. He stated

"There is growing evidence that excessive use of social media can contribute to

mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

In the interview, Participant A In the interview, according Participant A there are

positive and negative effects of social media in their academic performances. She

also recalled that there are advantages and disadvantages in time management

when it comes to using social media, she also stated that based on her experience

that social media can help students to be connected, but it can also serve as a

distraction when it comes to group chat notifications her explanation are the

following:

“Social media can have a variety of effects on academic performance can be

positive or negative. Social media can, on the other hand, make helpful study

35
materials accessible for me, encourage collaboration between the students, and

improve communication. However whenever i overuse social media i start to

procrastinate for hours, which leads to fewer in-person interactions, and less time

spent studying which will most likely negatively affect academic my success. There

are advantages and disadvantages to social media use when it comes to academic

time management. In my opinion, it can positively help improve learning, help

students keep connected, maintain their relationships with classmates who are

absent, etc., and it can help share materials given by the teachers and work together

on projects. Based on my experiences so far. On the other hand, social media is a

huge distraction. Instead of concentrating on my schoolwork, I get distracted by the

group chat because of the constant notifications, so I participate in the conversation.

And this results in me having horrible time management, and I procrastinate a lot.

Participant B In the interview.”

Participant B took note that while using social media for academic performances,

we can share and get ideas and information, but we can also get fake news and

wrong information claiming that:

“It can cause both positive and negative effects, like you can share and get ideas

and information on the other hand you can get fake news and wrong information that

can affect you your learning and academic performance. I usually verify online

information by checking the source, looking for evidences, examine the date, watch

out for any biases and use reliable fact-checking website to confirm details.

Participant C In this interview, participant C recalled that when it comes to negative

effects social media, us students rely more on applications that can give us answers,

and he stated that it is negative because it cannot enhance our knowledge, thr

following are his statement:

Not only it is teaching us to become lazy about school works, but only becoming

dependent on media that may be not true. Due to the overuse of gadgets I tend to

forget some of the activities that I have to do which is why we have to learn to

manage our time well.”

Participant E stated that students rely more on social media to have an answer on

students school works, he/she also recalled that it can affect our time management

and focus, her/his statement claimed:

“The possible effects are students relying much in applications such us artificial

intelligence to answer our trouble on school works and management control on the

time wether we focus on social media life or academics. Yes, social media has

affected my grades and academic performances in school but also my social

interactions with other students. Social media made me lose my focus through my

studies just to entertain myself and I had problems managing my time for my

academics.”

37
Participant F In this interview, Participant F recalled that students are active on

social media because it entertains them, it can affect their time management and

other problems, he/further exclaimed:

“The possible effects from it based on my experience is us teenagers or

students mostly focus on to entertain ourselves with social media which led to having

problems on time management or composed schedules to have our time for

academics, it can also lead into having self-problems on social media that lower their

esteem or motivation.”

Participant G He stated that it has negative effects on our sleeping habits,

especially when students use social media at night, his further explanation is the

following: “late night use of social media can interfere with sleep patterns, leading to

figure and reduced cognitive function.”

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Overview

40
This chapter presented the summary of the study, the findings, the conclusions

drawn from those findings, and the recommendations. The Summary of the Study

discussed the problem and the responses of the participants involved. The Findings

highlighted how participants answered the research problem. The Conclusion reflected

on what the researchers realized throughout the study. Lastly, the Recommendations

provided possible solutions or benefits regarding the identified problem.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The study aimed to answer the question:

"What are the effects of social media on the academic performance of students,

and how does it affect their school activities over time?"

1. Participants agreed that social media significantly impacted their study habits, often

leading to decreased focus and productivity in academic activities. Many, including

Participants A and G, emphasized the distractions caused by platforms such as

Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, which made it harder to concentrate during

study sessions and class lectures. Participants B and D stressed the importance of time

management, recommending strategies such as setting social media limits, creating

schedules, and reviewing habits to balance academics and online activities. Meanwhile,

Participants E and F noted that their reliance on social media for answers and research

negatively affected their learning and retention, particularly during the quarantine period.

Participant C pointed out that the entertainment value of social media contributed to

reduced academic engagement. Overall, the participants emphasized the need for

mindful and moderate social media use to prevent its negative effects on students'

studies.

41
2. The students acknowledged that excessive social media use negatively impacted both

mental health and academic performance. Many expressed concerns about stress,

anxiety, and depression, often worsened by cyberbullying, making it difficult to focus on

learning, complete assignments, or engage in class. Some participants highlighted that

prolonged screen time, especially among younger students, led to health issues such as

headaches and mental fatigue, ultimately affecting academic success. Others noted that

excessive social media use distanced students from reality, making them less engaged

in their studies and daily lives. While one participant suggested that social media could

offer learning opportunities, all agreed that its overall impact depended on how students

managed their usage. The participants stressed the importance of limiting screen time,

engaging in physical activities, and developing non-digital hobbies to mitigate the

negative effects of social media on academics and overall well-being.

3. The study also revealed that social media had both positive and negative effects on

students' academic lives. On the positive side, it provided access to useful educational

materials, encouraged collaboration, and improved communication. However, excessive

social media use led to procrastination, reduced in-person interactions, and diminished

study time, negatively affecting academic performance. Many students admitted to

relying heavily on technology and applications, which decreased creativity and fostered

dependence on potentially inaccurate information. Late-night social media use

contributed to disrupted sleep patterns, fatigue, and decreased cognitive function.

Overall, participants highlighted that while social media could be a valuable tool, its

misuse resulted in poor time management, reduced focus, and academic challenges.

CONCLUSIONS

1. Researchers found that students' study habits had deteriorated due to

increased social media use, with constant notifications distracting them from their

42
studies. Many participants admitted to relying too heavily on social media for answers,

leading to missed key lessons and decreased productivity.

2. Participants emphasized the negative impact of social media on today's youth, stating

that it contributed to mental health issues such as anxiety and stress. These issues

hindered students' ability to concentrate, participate in class, and complete assignments.

Some students noted that although they did not suffer from mental illness, the stress

caused by social media still affected their academic performance.

3. Throughout the interviews, students shared that social media had both benefits and

drawbacks in academics. While it helped maintain social connections and provided study

resources, it also served as a major distraction. Many admitted that social media use

often led to procrastination and a lack of deep understanding of lessons, reducing their

creativity in forming original answers.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Students should find a balance between social media use and their studies. While

platforms like Facebook and YouTube can be helpful, they can also distract from

homework and reading. Setting specific time limits for social media and creating a study

schedule can help maintain focus. Discussing the effects of social media with friends can

43
create a supportive environment that encourages prioritizing education. Using

technology wisely can enhance both learning and social interactions.

2. Teachers should collect students’ mobile phones during class to prevent distractions.

Instead of paying attention to lectures,776666 many students use their phones for social

media, negatively affecting their learning.

3. Teachers should engage more with students and develop more effective and

interesting teaching strategies to maintain students' attention and participation.

4. This study can serve as a legitimate and reliable reference for future researchers
