THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

The sign of the Cross signifies that we belong to Christ who redeemed us by dying on the Cross. Each
time we make the sign of the Cross, we remember that we belong to Christ. When a Christian begins
his day, his prayers, and his activities with the sign of the Cross, the person dedicates his day to the
glory of the God and calls on the Saviour’s grace which lets him act in the Spirit as a child of the
Father. The sign of the Cross strengthens us in temptations and difficulties. (CCC 2157)

How is it properly done?

1. With our right hand, we join together the three fingers (index, middle, and ring fingers) to
symbolize the Holy Trinity, that is, the Unity of God in three Divine Persons: God the Father, God
the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
2. We also join the smallest finger and our thumb to symbolize the nature of Jesus Christ. He is true
God and true man. He is fully human and fully divine.
3. IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER. With the right hand, we reverently touch our forehead as we
think of God the Father, the First Person in the Holy Trinity, who, with His wisdom, is the Creator
and Source of everything.
4. AND OF THE SON. Then, we bring down our hand to the womb (just below th
5. e navel) to remind us of the Jesus Christ, the Second Person in the Holy Trinity who came into the
world thru the womb of the Virgin Mary who bore Him.
6. AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Then we bring our hand to the left and right shoulders to remind us of
the Holy Spirit, the Third Persons in the Holy Trinity, who strengthens us in our journey of
Christian life.
7. AMEN. And finally, we bring our two hands together, closed in prayer.

The Sign of the Cross is a prayer of blessing itself. That is why, it is just right that we do it properly
and reverently.

Just like the different signs and symbols around us which we see, the Sign of the Cross is also a
symbol of our faith, that we belong to Christ, and that guides us to live good Christian lives.

PRAYER

PRAYER is an intimate communication with God who loves us. It is our personal faith response to
God, that is, a loving relationship with God, our all-loving Father, through Jesus Christ His Son, and in
the Holy Spirit.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRAYER

1. ADORATION
2. THANKSGIVING
3. CONTRITION
4. INTERCESSION
5. SUPPLICATION
1
Page

ADORATION – PRAISE
To adore the Lord is to love Him. A prayer of adoration is telling God that we know how great, how
wonderful, and how loving God is.

THANKSGIVING – GRATITUDE

In this prayer, we take the time to thank God for the many things He has given us. These include the
gift of our life and sustenance which help us in our needs, for the people around us, for the good
experiences that give us joy, and even the unpleasant experiences that give us lessons to learn from.

CONTRITION – CONFESSION / SORRY

In this prayer, we tell God that we are sorry for the things that we have done wrong which offend
God and others.

INTERCESSION – PRAYING FOR OTHERS

We pray for other people. We ask God to help our family, friends. We pray for others in the
community, for people who ask for our prayers, and even for other who are in need but whom we do
not know; the sick and the dying, the lonely and the broken-hearted, the poor and the unemployed,
victims of calamities, injustices, and violence. We also pray for God’s mercy for the souls in purgatory.

SUPPLICATION – PRAYING FOR ONESELF

We pray for ourselves. We ask God for the things that we need. We ask God to help us with the
things that we find hard to do. We ask God to give us the grace to live as His children by
understanding and doing what He wills so that all we think, say, and do will be pleasing to Him.

• BASIC PRAYERS •
The basic prayers are prayers we say in community. They are sometimes called common prayers.

OUR FATHER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit
of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

GLORY

Glory to the Father. And to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.

HAIL HOLY QUEEN

Page
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you do we cry
poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs. Mourning and weeping in this valley
of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our
exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus, O clement. O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

THE APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son,
our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again
from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy
Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and
life everlasting. Amen.

ACT OF CONTRITION

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You. And I detest all my sins because I fear the loss
of heaven and the pains of hell. But most of all because I offended You, my God, who are all-good
and deserving of all my love, I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do
penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

THE FATIMA PRAYER

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. And lead all souls into heaven,
especially those who are most in need of your divine Mercy.

3:00 O’CLOCK PRAYER (DIVINE MERCY)

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and an ocean of Mercy opened up
for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and
empty Yourself out upon us.

O Blood and water which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in
You. [3x]

Amen.

THE MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your
protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this
confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come. Before you I stand, sinful and
sorrowful. O mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petition, but in your mercy, hear and
answer me. Amen.

THE SACRAMENTS
Sacraments are outward, efficacious signs instituted by Christ to give grace. Through the sacraments,
the Church celebrates the love of Jesus that sustains us in the different stages of our life.

1. BAPTISM
In baptism, we receive new life in Christ. Through this sacrament, we share in the threefold
mission of Christ as priest, prophet, and king. The following are the effects of Baptism:
 It takes away our original sin (and all actual personal sins) and takes away the punishment
due to these;
 It makes us brothers and sisters of Christ and of one another, and we become members of
the mystical Body of Christ (the Church)
 We receive an indelible character as adopted sons and daughters of the Father and heirs of
God’s Kingdom through the sanctifying grace we receive; and
 It makes us temples of the Holy Spirit who instils in us the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Matter: Water
Form: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
Minister: Bishop, Priest, Deacon

Signs and symbols used at Baptism:

 Sign of the Cross – marks us an indelible character that we now belong to Christ
 Water – Water symbolizes cleansing and death. Baptismal water means the death of an old
life and rebirth into new life with Christ. Water in baptism washes away our impurities due
to sin.
 Oil – Oil heals and protects. The anointing with oil reminds us that the Lord extends salvation
to us and sends the Holy Spirit to protect and strengthen us. The oil of baptism symbolizes
that we have been “Christened” or anointed.
 White garment – By putting on this garment of purity, festivity, and new identity, the
baptized person shows a willingness to live a new life in holiness in union with the Lord who
is all-holy and wears our Christian dignity as God’s children.
 Lighted Candle – The light in the candle symbolizes Christ t which is lit from the Paschal
Candle represents Christ, the Light in our life; the Light that darkness (sin) cannot overcome;
Parents and sponsors are to light these candles as they have the duty to guide the child to
grow and follow Christ; this light will lead the baptized, along with their examples, to live a
moral life and be the source of light in a dark world.

2. CONFIRMATION
Confirmation seals our life of faith in Jesus. It strengthens the gift of grace we receive in
Baptism. In confirmation, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, just as the apostles received
Him at Pentecost in tongues of fire.

Matter: Laying of Hands and Sacred Chrism

Form: “Be sealed with [the gifts of] the Holy Spirit.”
Minister: Bishop
6

3. PENANCE
Page
Through the Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation, we receive the forgiveness of God. In
this sacrament, we receive Jesus’ healing grace through the absolution by the priest. It heals
us from the damage of sin and restores our relationship with God and the Church, and gives
us the grace to avoid sin in the future.

Matter: The verbal confession of sin to the priest.

Form: “I absolve you of your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit.”
Minister: Priest or Bishop

4. HOLY EUCHARIST
The Holy Eucharist was instituted at the Last Supper. The Holy Eucharist is our partaking of
the Body and Blood of Christ who is truly present—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the form
of the bread and wine which nourishes our life of faith. The Eucharist is the heart of the life of
the Christian community, “the source and summit of our Christian life.”
The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is a sign and symbol that remembers, makes present,
and celebrates God’s greatest love for us in Jesus’ total gift of love by His bloody sacrifice on
the Cross in an unbloody manner.

Matter: Bread and Wine

Form: The words of the consecration.
(“This is My Body” and “This is My Blood.”)
Minister: Bishops or Priests

5. HOLY ORDERS
In Holy Orders, men are as deacons, priests, or bishops. Bishops serve as shepherds of the
flock (the Church in the diocese) who carry on the teachings of the apostles. The priests serve
as pastors or spiritual leaders of their communities, and deacons serve to remind us of our
baptismal call to help others.

Matter: A baptized male.

Form: The long consecratory prayer of the ordination ceremony.
Minister: A Bishop

6. HOLY MATRIMONY
In Matrimony, a baptized man and woman are united with each other as a sign of the unity
between Christ and His Church.

Matter: The mutual consent of the couple and their promise to live together as
husband and wife in a lifelong union.
Form: “I take you…” (Spoken as a vow)
“I do.” (Spoken as an affirmation of the vow spoken by the representative of
the Church)
7
Page

Minister: A baptized man and a baptized woman who give their consent.
7. ANOINTING OF THE SICK
This sacrament unites a sick person’s suffering with that of Jesus and brings forgiveness of
sins.

Matter: Oil for the Sick

Form: “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord, in His love and mercy, help you
by the grace of the Holy Spirit, and may the Lord who frees you from sin,
save you and raise you up.”
Minister: Bishop or Priest

CATEGORIES OF THE SACRAMENTS:

Sacraments of Initiation:
• Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist

Sacraments of Service / Vocation:

• Holy Orders and Holy Matrimony

Sacraments of Healing:
• Penance and Anointing of the Sick

PRAYER BEFORE CONFESSION

O most merciful God, prostrate at Your feet, I implore Your forgiveness. I sincerely desire to leave all my evil
ways and to confess my sins with all sincerity to Your priest. I am a sinner, have mercy on me, O Lord. Give me
a lively faith and a firm hope in the Passion of my Redeemer. Give me for Your mercy’s sake a sorrow for
having offended so good a God. Mary, my Mother, refuge of sinners, pray for me that I may make a good
confession. Amen.

GUIDE FOR CONFESSION

1. Make a thorough examination of conscience.

2. Approach the priest at the confessional.
3. Make the sign of the Cross, after which, you say:

“BLESS ME FATHER, FOR I HAVE SINNED.

THIS IS MY FIRST CONFESSION AND THESE ARE MY SINS.”

4. Tell your sins simply and honestly. Be sure to say all your sins and try not to miss any.
5. After you mentioned your sins, say,
“THAT’S ALL FATHER.”
6. Listen to the advice of the priest and accept the penance he will give you.
7. Say the Act of Contrition.
8. Then the priest will say the words of absolution and will bless you with the Sign of the Cross.
9. The priest will then dismiss you saying,
“The Lord has freed you from your sins. Go in peace.”
And you will respond:
“THANKS BE TO GOD.”
10. Spend some time with our Lord thanking and praising Him for the gift of His mercy. Then do the
