Understanding Percentage

● A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. It is


denoted by the symbol %.
● For example, 50% means 50 out of 100, or simply 50/100 = 0.5

Basic Conversions Involving Percentage


● Fraction to Percentage: Multiply the fraction by 100 and add the %
sign.

Example: To convert 3/4 into a percentage:

● Percentage to Fraction: Remove the % sign, divide by 100, and


simplify if necessary.

Example: To convert 80% to a fraction:

● Decimal to Percentage: Move the decimal point two places to the


right and add the % sign.

Example: 0.25 = 0.25 × 100 = 25%

● Percentage to Decimal: Move the decimal point two places to the


left, removing the % sign.

Example: 85% = 0.85

Example regarding above concept:


Example 1: What is 40% of 200?

Solution:

40% = 40/100 = 0.40

⇒ 0.40 × 200 = 80

∴ The correct answer is 80.

Example 2: A shirt costs ₹500. A 25% discount is given. What is the


discounted price?

Solution:

Discount = 25% of 500 = 0.25 × 500 = ₹125

Discounted price = 500 - 125 = ₹375

∴ The correct answer is ₹375.

Example 3: Convert 3/4 to a percentage.

Solution:

(3/4) × 100 = 75%

∴ The correct answer is 75%.


Example 4: Convert 5/8 to a percentage.

Solution:

(5/8) × 100 = 62.5%

∴ The correct answer is 62.5%.

Example 5: Convert 80% to a fraction.

Solution:

80% = 80/100 = ⅘

∴ The correct answer is 4/5.

Example 6: Convert 25% to a fraction.

Solution:

25% = 25/100 = ¼

∴ The correct answer is ¼

Example 7: Convert 0.75 to a percentage.

Solution:

0.75 × 100 = 75%

∴ The correct answer is 75%

Example 8: Convert 0.56 to a percentage.

Solution:

0.56 × 100 = 56%

∴ The correct answer is 56%


Example 9: Convert 85% to a decimal.

Solution:

85% = 85/100 = 0.85

∴ The correct answer is 0.85

Example 10: Convert 60% to a decimal.

Solution:

60% = 60/100 = 0.60

∴ The correct answer is 0.60

Example 11: What is the value of 125 percent of 50 percent of 120?

Solution:

Given:

Value of 125 percent of 50 percent of 120

Calculation:

⇒ 120 x 50% x 125%

⇒ 120 x 50/100 x 125/100

⇒ 120 x 1/2 x 5/4

⇒ 15 x 5

⇒ 75

∴ The correct answer is 75.

Example 12: What is 20 percent of 85?

Solution:

Given:

20% of 85
Calculation:

20% of 85

⇒ 20/100 × 85

⇒ 17

∴ The correct answer is 17.

Example 13: What is 50% of 50% equal to (in decimal)?

Solution:

Formula Used:

X% = X/100

Calculation:

= (50/100) × (50/100)

= 2500/10000

= 0.25

∴ The correct answer is 0.25.
