Okay, so this, send this to the man, please. So, I should write three different journals, any
three, and each just has to be one page. So, for number two, where it says, write a
reflection on what I enjoyed.

So, what I enjoyed was interacting with the clients and getting to know my colleagues. What
I found difficult was answering, initially, I found it difficult answering the phone and doing
intakes in a fast manner or promptly manner. What really worked, whenever I had a
problem, I would consult with my colleague or my supervisor.

What I would do differently next time. I don't have anything to put about that. Okay, so I
just want to give a brief understanding that I work at an all men's shelter.

It's called Wilkins Salvation Army's Wilkinson Road Shelter. Yeah, so that's a little bit of
information there. If you want more information, if you want more to add to it, you can ask
me.

That is for number two.

Reflective Journal Entry

During my practicum at Wilkins Salvation Army’s Wilkinson Road Shelter, I had the opportunity to engage in
various tasks that contributed to my professional development. This experience provided valuable insights into
working with vulnerable populations, navigating challenges, and applying theoretical knowledge in a practical
setting. Throughout my time at the shelter, I developed essential skills, including communication, problem-
solving, and teamwork, all of which were integral to my role. Reflecting on my experiences, I will discuss what
I enjoyed, what I found difficult, what strategies were effective, and what I would do differently in the future.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my practicum was interacting with the clients and building rapport with
my colleagues. Engaging with clients allowed me to better understand their unique experiences and challenges,
reinforcing the importance of empathy and client-centered care (Miley, O’Melia, & DuBois, 2022). Developing
professional relationships with my colleagues also contributed to a supportive work environment where I felt
comfortable seeking guidance and learning from their expertise.
Despite these positive experiences, I initially found certain tasks challenging. Answering phone calls and
conducting client intakes in a timely manner were particularly difficult for me at the beginning. Given the fast-
paced nature of the shelter, I sometimes struggled to process information quickly while ensuring accuracy and
maintaining professionalism. Research suggests that effective crisis intervention requires both efficiency and
active listening, which are skills that improve with experience and practice (Roberts & Ottens, 2005). Over time,
I gained confidence in handling these responsibilities more efficiently by observing my colleagues and
practicing my responses.
One of the strategies that worked well for me was consulting with my colleagues or supervisor whenever I
encountered difficulties. This approach not only helped me improve my problem-solving skills but also
reinforced the importance of collaboration in social work practice (Healy, 2014). By seeking guidance, I was
able to address my challenges more effectively and enhance my ability to respond to clients’ needs in a
professional manner. Additionally, this practice aligns with the principles of reflective supervision, which
emphasize continuous learning and professional growth (Kadushin & Harkness, 2014).
At this stage, I do not have any specific aspects that I would change about my approach. However, as I continue
to gain experience, I anticipate identifying areas for further improvement. My goal moving forward is to
continue refining my communication skills, particularly in high-pressure situations, to ensure that I provide the
best possible support to clients. Overall, my practicum at Wilkinson Road Shelter has been a valuable learning
experience that has strengthened my confidence and professional competencies.
