ABSTRACT

This summary outlines three main types of printers: Ink jet,

laser, and dot matrix. Ink jet printers excel in
color and precision, perfect for graphics. Laser printers

provide fast, high-res text prints. Dot matrix printers,

though less common, are suitable for multipart forms

are receipts. Each type caters to specific printing

needs, offering versatility in the digital age.

INTRODUCTION

• DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRINTERS

❖Impact Printers:
An impact printer is a type of printing device that
creates text and images on paper by physically striking an inked
ribbon against the paper’s surface, transferring the ink. They work
through the use of a mechanical mechanism, such as a series of
pins, hammers, or typebars, to press the inked ribbon onto the
paper. Some common examples of impact printers are dot matrix
printers, typewriters, and daisy wheel printers.

Characteristics:

1. Print quality and cost is low.

2. It can print line or character at a time.
3. It can print multiple copies at a time.
4. No carbon is required.
o Dot Matrix Printer
A Dot matrix printer is one of type of printer which uses small
pins or wires to create characters or
images on paper which was 1970s and
1980s introduced. It is called a “Dot
matrix” printer because it forms
characters and graphics by printing a
series of dots in a matrix pattern.
The printer head of a dot matrix printer consists of a grid of tiny
pins or wires arranged in a rectangular array. These pins or wires
are driven by electromagnetic actuators, which cause them to
strike an ink-soaked ribbon against the paper, forming dots. By
selectively activating specific pins or wires, the printer can create
characters, symbols, and images.

❖ Non-Impact Printer:

Non-impact printers are a modern marvel of technology,

utilizing electrostatic, inkjet, and thermal methods to transfer
digital content onto paper without physically striking the page.
These printers offer quieter operation, cleaner output, and often
greater flexibility in terms of color and resolution compared to
their impact-based counterparts. Electrostatic printers employ the
attraction of charged particles to the paper, inkjet printers
disperse ink droplets onto the page, while thermal printers use
heat to activate specially coated paper, resulting in a wide array of
printing options for various needs and preferences.

Characteristics:

1. Non-Impact printers do not make physical contact between

the printer head and the paper.
2. They are quieter than Impact printers.
3. These printers have better print quality.
4. Colored graphics can also be printed with these printers.

❖ Inkjet Printers
It is widely used by home and business computer users that
prints characters by spraying the ink
using magnetic plates on the paper.
It contains a paper feed assembly,
ink cartridge, print head, stabilizer
bar, and belt.
It stores the ink in cartridges, and uses separate cartridge to print
several types of color documents. These colors are a combination
of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black color. These types of printers
have the ability to create high-quality pictures with the help of
vivid colors. Furthermore, the inkjet printers are more affordable
and easier to use as compared to other printers.

Advantages of Inkjet Printers:

1. The Inkjet printers have the ability to produce high-quality

output.
2. These printers are reasonably fast and easy to use.
3. Additionally, these types of printers do not take warm up time.

Disadvantages of Inkjet Printer:

1. It may take more time to print.

2. Its running cost is high.
3. It does not allow the highlighter marker.
4. Sometimes, it can produce a wrong warning of an empty
cartridge.
❖ Laser printers

The laser printer is one of the common personal computer

printers. It was introduced in 1971,
and after that it was developed at
Xerox PARC by Gary Starkweather. It
uses the laser or non-impact
photocopier technology to print the
text and images on the paper. Whenever it gets input to print any
document, a laser beam draws the document on the selenium-
coated drum with the help of electric charges.

When the drum is charged, it is rolled in toner (dry ink powder).

The ink follows the image, which has charged on the drum. The
ink is combined with the paper, including heat and pressure, then
transferred on a chunk (piece) of paper.

When the document is printed, the excess toner is collected,

and an electric charge is removed from the drum. Most of the
laser printers are capable of printing only in monochrome. The
monochrome laser printer is around ten times cheaper than a
color laser printer.
Advantages of a Laser printer:

1. These types of printers have a higher paper capacity.

2. It is less expensive than the inkjet printer.
3. It has the ability to print documents speedily.
4. Furthermore, it is able to increase productivity.

Disadvantages of a Laser printer:

1. Laser printers may need warm up time.

2. Laser printers are bulky as they required the laser technology
and imaging drum.
3. It requires high voltage leads to small carbon emissions.
4. 3D Print
MATERIALS AND METHOD

▪ Inkjet Printers:
Method: Inkjet printers work by spraying tiny droplets of ink
onto the paper. These droplets are precisely controlled to create
text or images.
Materials: Inkjet printers typically use liquid ink stored in
cartridges. The ink is typically water-based or solvent-based.

▪ Laser Printers:
Method: Laser printers use a laser beam to create an
electrostatic image on a drum, which attracts toner (powdered
ink). The toner is then transferred and fused onto the paper.
Materials: Laser printers use toner cartridges containing
powdered ink, which is fused onto the paper using heat.

▪ Dot Matrix Printer:

Method: Dot matrix printers use a matrix of pins to strike an inked
ribbon, creating dots on the paper. These dots form characters
and images.
Materials: Dot matrix printers use inked ribbons that transfer ink
onto the paper as the pins strike it.
DISCUSSION

Printers come in various types, each tailored to specific printing

needs. Inkjet printers spray tiny droplets of ink onto paper,
making them versatile for documents and photos. Laser printers
use laser technology to produce sharp text and graphics
efficiently, ideal for high-volume printing in offices. All-in-one
printers combine printing, scanning, copying, and sometimes
faxing capabilities into a single machine, suitable for diverse needs
in homes and small businesses. Photo printers specialize in high-
quality photo printing using advanced inkjet technology. 3D
printers create three-dimensional objects by layering
materials like plastic or metal, serving industries such as
manufacturing and healthcare. Understanding these types helps
users select the most suitable printer for their intended use,
whether it's everyday printing, high-quality photos, or specialized
3D printing applications.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, printers play a crucial role in modern society,
facilitating the creation of physical copies of digital content for
various purposes. From inkjet and laser printers to dot matrix
each type offers unique capabilities suited to specific applications
and industries.
Inkjet printers are versatile and affordable, excelling in color
printing for homes and offices, particularly for photos and
graphics. Laser printers prioritize speed and efficiency, making
them ideal for high-volume text printing in office environments.
Dot matrix printers remain relevant in industries requiring robust,
multipart form printing, despite being less common in modern
settings. Selecting the right printer involves considering factors
such as intended use, printing volume, budget, and required print
quality. Understanding the strengths and limitations of each
printer type empowers users to make informed decisions that
meet their specific needs, ensuring optimal performance and
satisfaction with printing tasks.
