Contents Title
The contents title is conventionally at the top of the page and is the largest text on the page.
This clearly indicates the purpose of the page to the audience.

This FourFourTwo magazine contents page has a very conventional contents title. It is the
largest text on the contents page by far which makes it stand out and clearly states to the
audience what the page’s purpose is. It is in a black colour with a blocky formal font and has
white thin lines running through the middle of each
letter. It is situated right above all of the section
headings and is the exact length as all of the
article’s layout. It is completely centred vertically and
it goes across two pages which is fairly
unconventional since the contents title is usually
towards the top if not the top most on the page.

Image of front cover

The image of front cover is repeated on the contents
page, which is usually big but not too big so that it
doesn’t attract the all of the attention which should
be going to something like the contents title.

Unfortunately, the FourFourTwo The New Man

United issue does not have a contents page with an
image of front cover but this is an example of a
different magazine that does have an image of front
cover in its contents page. The image of front cover is evidently the largest image on the
page, this helps it stand out and helps to attract the attention of the audience. It is repeated
in order to show off the brand to the audience and keep their attention on it.

Issue Information
The issue information is usually written in a smaller text than the “contents” title but usually
positioned near it and contains the issue number, month, year etc.

Unfortunately, the FourFourTwo The New Man United

issue does not have a contents page with issue
information but this is an example of a similar
magazine that does have issue information. The issue
information on this magazine’s contents page is in a
bold and red font which helps attract attention to it.
The colour red gives connotations of football and
competitiveness straight away since most football
teams seem to have some relation to the colour red. It
is right below the contents title so therefore it is the
second thing that the audience sees after the contents
title.
Multiple images
Multiple images are used to illustrate articles on the contents page. They are usually
positioned together and will be visually interesting, with relevant mise en scene that signifies
the genre.

This FourFourTwo magazine contents page is fairly conventional since there are a lot of
images set around the page to illustrate various articles in the magazine. However, they are
laid out in a circle pattern around the box with the contents title and all of the columns which
is a bit unconventional since it is also set out along the edges of the page. This is very
strange since usually the multiple images on a contents page are set out randomly across it.
Only three of the images on the contents page have a page number, all three being in the
corners of this contents page. They are all clearly related to different genres and topics, the
audience can clearly see this because of the mise en scene used in all of the images. The
mise en scene clearly describes a topic of football in a few of the images on this contents
page which should be expected since this magazine is about football. All in all, though they
all differ in a certain way weather its facial expression, outfit, background and overall
atmosphere.

Page number and captions on images

The page number and captions on images is used to link the images to an article which
helps the audience navigate the magazine with ease.

This FourFourTwo content page has conventional page numbers since the three page
numbers that are on this contents page are situated on their specific image to directly link
the article to their page. All three page numbers are situated on three different images that
are linked to three different genres of articles that are in this FourFourTwo magazine. They
are written in big and bold fonts to make them be clear and also help them stand out. They
are written in a bright white colour which helps them stand out from the actual image they
are on; this makes it obvious that they aren’t just a part of the image and are separate.

Column Layout
The column layout is used to create structure and in order to allow the audience to use and
navigate around the page easily. There are conventionally three columns to a page.

This FourFourTwo content page has a mostly conventional column layout. There are four
total columns on the page which all have content that is the same font type and text size.
They are all below the contents title which goes across the top of all of the columns, this
helps direct the audience’s attention to the columns since the first thing that is noticed will be
the contents title, therefore the columns being right below it makes them the second thing
the audience notices. There are six different section headings in all of the columns with two
section headings in the first and last columns and just a single section heading in the middle
columns. The columns are separated by distinct grey lines going vertically between each
column to make them clearly distinguished and helps the information look tidy to help the
audience navigate the different columns easily.
Repetition of Masthead
The repetition of masthead is sometimes located at
the top of the page near the “contents” title.

Unfortunately, the FourFourTwo The New Man

United issue does not have a contents page with a
repetition of masthead but this example is of a
Mojo magazine that does have repetition of
masthead on its contents page. The repetition of
the masthead on this mojo magazine is very
conventional as it is the largest text size and
boldest font type on the page. This helps it stand
out from the rest of the page and immensely
attracts attention from the audience instantly.

Page number and additional information

The page number and additional information
is conventionally located at the bottom of the
page and is written in a small text size in the
centre corners. It includes page number and
then sometimes the masthead and issue
information.

Unfortunately, the FourFourTwo The New Man

United issue does not have a contents page
with a page number and additional information
but this is an example of a Mojo magazine that
does have page number and additional
information on its contents page. The page
number and additional information on this
contents page is written in a fairly small text size
but is in bold which helps it stand out alongside
with the two lines that are above and below
them. This helps attract attention to them
despite them being written in a small text size.
They are also located right below the repetition of masthead which is the biggest text size on
the page. This makes the audience attracted to the repetition of masthead but since it is right
above the page number and information the audience’s attention is directed to the page
number and additional information.

Layout of Articles
The layout of articles is set out as page number first, followed by the article name/title which
is usually in a bigger/bolder/different colour font to main body text. Underneath there is main
body text which is simple and plain, small and gives more information about the article to
help get the audience hooked.

This FourFourTwo contents page has a very conventional layout of articles since the page
number always comes first which is followed up by the article title which is in a bolder font
than the main body text. The main body text is also on the next line directly below the article
title which is in a simple and plain text. The article title and the main body text are in the
same size text but the audience’s attention is still dragged to the article title since it is in bold
and the main body text isn’t.

Section heading
The section heading is text used to separate the articles into sections. This helps to create
order for the audience. It will often be linked to regular and feature content smaller text than
the contents title but bigger than the main body text.

This FourFourTwo contents page has very conventional section headings since they have a
text size smaller than the contents title but bigger than the main body text. In total there are 6
different section headings that are not all the same colour. One is in pink, one is in green,
one is in blue and three are in red in order to help the audience figure out quickly which
sections will have similar information and which won’t. There is not a single section heading
that is not in a column. They all mention different types of content except for the red ones
which are all features. For example, under one of the section headings in one of the
featuring columns, the article title “The new Man United” helps attract the attention of the
audience since it is the exact same line as the main cover line on the front page, this will
allow the audience to stay on topic and get reminded of what the magazine is mainly about.

House style
This is the brand style of the magazine. It includes the style of the fonts, layout, colour
scheme and language. This will usually be appropriate for the genre of the magazine and the
largest audience.

This FourFourTwo issue’s contents page uses connotations of formality and excitement
since there are so many different images the audience gets almost overwhelmed by content.
The fonts on this contents page are mostly formal with its layout of articles being in a normal
arial text which Is easy to read for anyone. The only piece of text that is odd is the contents
title which is written in a strange and blocky font. Although the general layout of this contents
page is quite unconventional since having so many images in a circular pattern is a bit
strange, it still gets the job done in showing the audience what they need.
