Lab. 3: Build and Simulate Three-Phase Circuits

Objectives:
1. Build and simulate Y-Y and Y-∆-connected three-phase circuits.
2. Present the circuit variables using the scope.
3. Investigate the relationship (phase shift) between voltages and currents.
4. Calculate the average/reactive/apparent powers and power factor.

Utilities

Procedure 1:
1. Open MATLAB and select Simulink from the tool strip of the “Home” tab.
2. Open a new blank model to contain your circuit and save it (model name cannot contain
spaces).
3. Add three AC voltage source blocks and connect them in Y. Connect the neutral point to
the ground using the ground block.
4. Set the amplitudes of the AC voltage source blocks to 10 V, phases to 0, -120, and 120
degrees respectively, and set the frequency to 50 Hz.
5. Add one current, two voltage, and one power measurement block.
6. Connect the current measurement block to measure the line current in phase a.
7. Connect the voltage measurement blocks to measure the phase-to-ground and the phase-
to-phase voltages.
8. Connect the power measurement to the line current and the phase-to-ground voltage.
9. Set the harmonic numbers in the power measurement blocks to one and the base frequency
to 50 Hz.
10. Add three RMS blocks and set the fundamental frequency to 50 Hz.
11. Add seven displays and one scope.

2
12. Add one three-phase V-I measurement block. Set voltage measurement to phase-to-ground
and current measurement to yes. Connect it in series with the source.
13. Add the stand-alone environment block powergui block.
14. Add a three-phase series RLC branch, select branch type R, and set the resistance value to
3 Ω.
15. Connect the three-phase series RLC branch in Y and connect the neutral point to the ground
using the ground block.
16. Connect the input of the three-phase series RLC branch with the three-phase V-I
measurement block to complete the circuit as shown in Fig. 1.
17. Connect the three-phase V-I measurement block to the scope and to the power
measurement (three-phase) block.
18. Set the stop time to 0.02 seconds.
19. Show the phase-to-ground voltages and the line currents on the scope.
20. Change the three-phase series RLC branch by selecting the branch type RL, RC, and RLC
and set their values as shown in the table.
21. Include in your report the table below with all values of the measured variables.
