Assignment – I

1. Let V be the set of all ordered pairs of real numbers with addition defined by(x1,
x2 ) ( y1, y2 )  (x1  y1, x2  y2 ) and scalar multiplication defined by(x1, x2 )  (x1,x2 ) .
Show that V is a vector space under the given operations.
2. Show that Rmxn, together with the usual addition and scalar multiplication of matrices,
satisfies the eight axioms of a vector space.
3. Prove that the set of complex numbers C forms a vector space with the complex addition
and scalar multiplication of complex numbers.
4. Determine whether the following sets form subspaces of R3:

(a) {(x1, x2, x3)T : 𝑥3 = 𝑥1 + 𝑥2 } (b) { 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 , 𝑥3 : 𝑥3 = 𝑥1 𝑜𝑟 𝑥3 = 𝑥2 }

5. Determine whether the following are subspaces of R2x2:


(a) The set of all 2 × 2 triangular matrices. (b) The set of all symmetric 2 × 2 matrices.
6. Which of the sets that follow are spanning sets for P3? Justify your answers.
(a) {2, x2, x, 2x + 3} (b) {x + 2, x + 1, x2 − 1}.

7. Show that the vectors u = (1, 2, 0)T, v = (0, 1, 1)T and w = (1, 0, 3)T form a basis for R3.

9. Show that the given vectors are linearly independent in C[0, 1].

10. For each of the following matrices, find a basis for the row space, a basis for the column
space, and a basis for the null space. Also, verify the Rank-nullity theorem.

14. For each of the following pairs of vectors x and y, find the vector projection p of x onto
y, angle between them and verify that p and x − p are orthogonal:
(a) x = (3, 4)T , y = (1, 0)T
(b) x = (2, -5, 4)T , y = (1, 2 , -1)T

15. In C[0,1], compute (i) < x2, cos πx > (ii) <x2, x4> (iii) <ex,e−x>.

16. Find the basis for 𝑆 ⊥ where S is the subspace of ℝ4 spanned by 𝑥1 = (1, 0, −2.1) and
𝑥2 = (0, 1, 3, −2).
17. In P3, compute the length of the function p(x) = 3x with xi= (i−1)/3 for i= 1, 2,3.

18. For A= , compute <A, B>, ||A||F, ||B||F, ||A+B||F.

19. Let x be the vector (3, –4, 0, 1, 5)T in R4. Compute ||x||1,||x||2 and ||x||∞.
20. Applying Gram-Schmidt process for finding the orthonormal basis of V3(R) starting with
the following basis (3,2,0)T, (-5,1,-6)T and (2,0,1)T.
21. Find the orthonormal basis for the subspace of R4 spanned by (1,1,1,1)T, (3,3,2,2)T
and (4,0,2,1)T.
22. Find the eigen values and the corresponding eigen spaces for the following matrices.
