When you think of the saints, what type of person comes to mind? Maybe
you think of old priests and nuns who lived a long time ago, Those saints are
great, but there are so many more saints than just those ones! There are saints
who were young and who lived not very long ago, too! Did you know that there are
even saints who loved to play sports and video games?
Venerable Carlo Acutis was a young Italian boy who was very similar to you. When he was little, he
had a very normal childhood. He liked playing with his dogs and playing soccer. Even though his family
was not very active in practicing their Catholic faith, Carlo was different. He longed to receive Jesus in the
Holy Eucharist. After his First Holy Communion, Carlo went to Mass as frequently as he was able and
often went to spend time with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. One of his favorite ways to pray with the
Rosary.
Carlo loved to spend time outdoors traveling, hiking, and playing soccer, Out of all of the many places
he traveled to, Carlo's favorite place to visit was Assisi, Italy, the home of St. Francis of Assisi. Another thing
Carlo liked to do was play video games on his PlayStation. He was always careful to be mindful of the
time he spent playing them, though. He did not want to spend too much time away from doing more
important things, like being with his friends or family.
Carlo was very gifted in computer programming. He used his talents to create a website listing
Eucharistic miracles and giving information about them. You can still visit his website taday:
miracolieucaristiciorg.
When Carlo was 15 years old, he was diagnosed with Leukernia, a type of cancer that effects a
person's blood and bones. Three days later, Carlo died. Just like everything else he did, Carlo offered his
suffering to grow closer to Christ.
On October 10, 2020, Ven. Carlo will be beatified by Pope Francis, His new title will be Blessed Carlo
Acutis. This means that Carlo is one step closer to becoming a canonized saint in the Church,
Carlo did not live that long ago. He died in 2006—just 14 years ago. If he was still alive today, he would
only be 29 years old. That means that he was alive during your grandparents’, parents’, and maybe even
siblings’ lives!
Carlo’s life reminds us that anyone can be a saint—even kids who love soccer and video games!
Today, think of one small way that YOU can arow closer to Christ every day. Ask for Carlo’s intercession to
