Lab Activity 3

The document outlines a laboratory activity for a hydraulics course, requiring students to solve problems related to forces and pressures in fluid mechanics. It includes tasks such as calculating the acceleration of a tank, forces on tank sides, and pressures under different conditions of vessel movement. Students must present their answers neatly on A4 paper, with specific formatting instructions for submission.

CE 112: HYDRAULICS

Instruction: Write your answers on A4-size bond paper. Enclose in a box your final answer. Answers that are not
enclosed in a box will not be considered. Make your solutions as neat as possible. 25pts each.

1. An open tank 5.2m long, 1.3m wide and 1.5m high weighs 4.2kN and contains 0.9m high of water. It is acted by an
unbalanced force of 10.2kN parallel to a pair of sides. Determine the following:
a. Acceleration of the tank
b. Force acting on the side with greatest depth
c. Force acting on the side with smallest depth

2. Refer to the figure.

a. Determine the total pressure if the vessel is moving upward with an acceleration of 3m/s 2?
b. Determine the total pressure if the vessel is moving downward with an acceleration of 3m/s2?

3. An open cylindrical vessel 0.6m in diameter and 0.90m high is two- thirds full of water.
a. What is the greatest speed in rpm that it can have without spilling any liquid?
b. What speed must it have in order that there may be no liquid within 150 mm diameter of the center in the bottom of
the tank?
