Assignment 1 - Solutions to Assignment Questions

The document provides solutions to assignment questions related to statistical hypothesis testing, including Z-tests and t-tests for various scenarios. It covers sample means, proportions, and variances, illustrating how to draw conclusions based on significance levels. The document emphasizes the acceptance and rejection of null hypotheses based on calculated test statistics and critical values.

Unit 3
Solutions to assignment questions

For each problem, students need to indicate the acceptance and rejections in the sketch

1 A sample of 350 cylindrical specimens is chosen from a population which is normally

distributed with a mean diameter of 35 mm and standard deviation of 1.5 mm. Test if the
sample mean of 34.67 mm is consistent with the population mean.
Solution
H0: µ = 35
H0: µ ≠ 35

Std. dev. of population σ = 1.5

Sample mean = 34.67
n=350

Two-sided test
Use Z test statistic

Zcal = -4.115
Take α = 5%

Find Ztable and draw conclusions

Null hypothesis is unlikely to be true

2 The weight of new born babies is assumed to be less than 3 kg. To test this, a sample of 10
new born babies was chosen from a hospital and their weights are noted as follows:
2.8 3.2 2.95 2.5 2.6 3.5 3.36 2.54 3.18 2.86

Draw inferences at 10% level of significance.

Solution H0: µ = 3
H0: µ < 3

n=10
Std. dev. of population σ is not given

Use t-statistic
Sample mean = 2.949
Sample std. dev. = 0.351
tcal = -0.46

Take α = 10%

Left tailed test

Find t-table value and draw conclusions
Ho can be accepted
3 Out of 1500 families in a small town, 650 did not have a wi-fi connection at their houses.
Does this indicate that in small towns, less than 50% of the families have wi-fi?
Solution n=1500 families

Let p be the proportion of families in the population who have wi fi connection

H0: p = 0.5
H0: p < 0.5

Let p̂ be the proportion of families in the sample who have wi fi connection = 850/1500 =
0.567
Left tail test
Use Z-statistic
Zcal = 5.15

Take α = 5% and find table value and draw conclusions

Ho is accepted

4 A manufacturing industry is trying to reduce the variance of one of its processes to less than
0.8. for this purpose, a sample of 25 products was inspected and the variance was 1.05.
Draw your inferences at
i) α = 1%
ii) α = 5%
iii) α = 10%

Explain how your conclusions change as you increase the level of significance.
Solution H0: σ2 = 0.8
H0: σ2 < 0.8

n=25, sample variance = 1.05

Chi-square test statistic
Left tailed test
Calculated value of = (1.05*24) / 0.8 = 31.5
i) α = 1%
For α = 1% , table value of for 0.01 and 24 is 42.98
The table value of is -42.98 (as this is left tailed test) and calculated value is 31.5
Conclusions: Ho is accepted as the calculated value is lying in the acceptance region

ii) α = 5%
For α = 5% , table value of for 0.05 and 24 is 36.42
The table value of is -36.42 (as this is left tailed test) and calculated value is 31.5
Conclusions: Ho is accepted as the calculated value is lying in the acceptance region

iii) α = 10%
For α = 10% , table value of for 0.05 and 24 is 33.20
The table value of is -33.20 (as this is left tailed test) and calculated value is 31.5
Conclusions: Ho is accepted as the calculated value is lying in the acceptance region

An increase in the significance level, has increased the region of rejection. Since this is a
left tailed test and the calculated value is positive, there is no difference in the conclusions.
