Lab Akhir Wahed

The lab report discusses the process of demodulating an AM-modulated waveform to retrieve the original low-frequency message using envelope detection. It explains the role of filters, specifically low-pass and high-pass filters, in signal processing, and describes the function of an envelope detector circuit. Experimental procedures and results are illustrated with figures showing the message signal, carrier signal, and the effects of filtering.

MODULATION/ DEMODULATION

1
PROCEDURE 3: ENVELOPE DETECTION
1. Introduction:
The third procedure is to demodulate the high-frequency AM-modulated waveform to
obtain the low-frequency message.
2. Theoretical Background:
After the message signal is modulated by the sender, it is the job of the receiver to
demodulate it to regain the original information. A low-pass filter is used to block the
high frequencies that come with the carrier.
What are filters?
Filters are circuits used for signal processing. In this report, we are concerned by:
- Low-pass filters: designed to eliminate all frequencies above a given value.
- High-pass filters: designed to eliminate all frequencies below a given value.
An RC circuit can serve as a high pass or a low pass filter, depending on the choice of
the physical output variable.

What is an envelope detector?

An envelope detector is an electric circuit used to obtain the envelope for the original
high-frequency signal. The capacitor in our circuit stores charges on the rising edge and
discharges whenever we reach a peak. Additionally, the energy stored in the capacitor
flows through a resistor.

3. Experimental procedures

Figure 1: Envelop detector for C1=0.01 µF R1=2 kΩ

Using the following Simulation Numerical values for the resistor and capacitor with the
values C1=0.01 µF R1=2 kΩ, we get the following:

Figure 2: Message Signal

Figure 3: Carrier Signal

Figure 4: Envelope detection

Figure 5: Envelope detector for C2=1 nF and R2=145 kΩ

We then use a low-pass filter to eliminate the high frequency caused by the carrier.

We notice that our waveform is shifted. This shift is also known as DC offset. DC is 0Hz
thus any high-pass filter can remove the DC offset.
