let me introduce myself, i'm …… and this is my partner …… and we are students at ies
zapaton 2A

the purpose of today's presentation is to let you know some interesting things about the
amish people.

INDEX: IN TODAYS PRESENTATION WE ARE GOING TO COVER THESE POINTS.

FIRSTLY, I´LL BE LOOKING AT ….
SECONDLY WE´LL CONSIDER ….
THEN, WE´LL EXPLAIN HOW …..
AND FINALLY WE WILL SHOW YOU A SHORT VIDEO

SO, LETS START, SHALL WE?

WHAT THE AMISH ARE:

The Amish are an American Protestant group with around 200,000 members descended
from European Anabaptists who came to the USA more than two centuries ago to escape
persecution.

They are best known for their 19th century way of life that was portrayed in the 1985
Harrison Ford film Witness, in which violent crime clashed with their peaceful existence.

THEIR LANGUAGE
All the Amish of the old order speak a dialect of the High German, the majority a dialect
known as Deitsch
The Amish speak English too, but the latter is reserved to communicate with the outside
world. For the sermon and the songs in the service and to read the Bible they use an old
form of standard German, also called Hochdeutsch. SO THAT CONCLUDES THE AMISH
LANGUAGE

FAMILY
The Amish only marry other Amish and do not divorce. They have large families with an
average of 7-8 children. NOW, LET'S MOVE ON TO...

CLOTHING
Normally men wear dark colored suits and wide-brimmed hats, while women wear long
skirts, simple dresses, with an apron and a cap. Bridal dresses are often blue or purple.
Men let their beards grow like the Hebrews

The Amish use only smooth and muted colors such as blue, green, gray and black. Stamps
of any kind are not allowed

Buttons and zippers are not allowed
Men wear straw hats in summer and felt hats in cold weather. Women wear small hats:
single women wear white, and married women wear black.
The Amish women do not cut their hair, taking it to a bun under their hats. Men are not
allowed to have whiskers. OK THAT CONCLUDES THE CLOTHING SECTION

EDUCATION
The schools are buildings of a large and lonely room and run by the Amish themselves.
Formal education beyond 8th grade is not recommended, although many young people
receive additional instruction in their homes after graduation
WELL LET'S MOVE ON TO

Technological abstention:
Many Amish avoid using various elements of modern technology. Objects such as cars,
televisions, telephone and electricity are excluded from the lifestyle allowed by the
community because they are considered distracting elements in life. For example, for
transportation, they use horse-drawn carriages.

NOW LETS MOVE ON CURIOSITIES:

1.Among these groups there is what is called Ordnung, a set of rules that order the
life of the Amish. Each community has its own ordinances, although they agree on
several things
2.When an Amish decides to leave his community, the family breaks all the ties they had with the
person.
3.The Amish are a patriarchal society and women do not have the same rights as men.
4.The Amish man grows his beard once he marries, being a sign of respect and role in the
community. One of the attacks seen in the Amish societies, is to cut the beard of another man,
which represents a serious offense
5..After 16 Amish children can experience life outside the community for a few years to decide if
they wish to become full members of the baptized community. 90% decide to do it.

THE AMISH DOCUMENTARIES

The documentaries Trouble in Amish Paradise, Leaving Amish Paradise and Amish Secret Life
produced by the BBC, have revealed details about the religiosity and traditions of the Amish.
These have been produced in order to present the lifestyle of Amish members and families who
voluntarily allowed themselves to be recorded, without authorization from the church, to help
expose aspects of community life.
