ASSIGNMENT – 1
1. A 0.8 m high, 1.5m wide double-pane window consists of two 4 mm thick layers of glass (k = 78
W/mK) and is separated by a 10 mm wide stagnant air space (k = 0.026 W/mK). The room is at 20°C
and the outside air is at -10°C. The heat transfer coefficients are hi = 10 and ho = 40 W/m²K. To find:
(i) The rate of heat transfer through the window, (ii) the inside surface temperature.
2. The temperature on the two surface of a 30 mm thick steel plate (K = 50 W/m°C) having uniform
volumetric heat generation of 30x106 W/m³, are 180°C and 120 °C, Neglecting the end effects,
determine the
(1) Temperature distribution across the plate.
(2) The value and position of the maximum temperature.
(3) The flow of heat from each surface of the plate.
3. A plane wall 10 cm thick generates heat at the rule of 4x 104 W / m³ when an electrical current is
passed through it. The convective heat transfer coefficient between each face of the wall and ambient
air is 50 W/m²K Determine the surface temperature. Assume the air temperature to be 20 °C and K=15
W/mK.
4. A steel pipe with 50 mm OD is covered with a 6.4 mm asbestos insulation [k = 0.166 W/mK] followed
by a 25 mm layer of fiber-glass insulation [k = 0.0485 W/mK]. The pipe wall temperature is 393 K and
the outside insulation temperature is 311 K. Calculate the interface temperature between the asbestos
and fiber-glass.
5. A wire of 6.5 mm diameter at a temperature of 60°C is to be insulated by a material having k = 0.174
W/m°C. Convection heat transfer coefficient (h) = 8.722 W/m2°C. The ambient temperature is 20°C.
For maximum heat loss, what is the minimum thickness of insulation and heat loss per metre length?
Also find percentage increase in the heat dissipation too.
6. A current of 300 A passes through a wire of 2.5 mm diameter and K=20 W/m °C. The resistivity of
wire is 70x 10-8 Ωm and the length of the wire is 2 m. If the wire is submerged in a fluid maintained at
50 °C and convective heat transfer coefficient at the wire surface is 4000 W/m² °C, calculate the steady
state temperature at the centre and at the surface of wire.
7. A cylindrical fin is 3 mm in diameter and 3 m long, calculate the value of the temperature at fin tip if
the fin is made of
(i) Copper (K = 350 W/mK) and
(ii) Teflon (K = 0.35 W/mK)
Assume that heat loss from tip is negligible. Take h = 10 W/m2K If = 20 °C Tbase = 120 °C
8. Aluminium fins 1.5cm wide and 10mm thick are placed on a 2.5cm diameter tube to dissipate the heat.
The tube surface temperature is 170 °C ambient temperature is 20 °C. Calculate the heat loss per fin.
Take h = 130W/m2C and K = 200W/m° C for aluminium.
9. An aluminium alloy fin of 7mm thick and 50mm long protrudes from a wall, which is maintained at
120°C. The ambient air temperature is 22° C. The heat transfer coefficient and conductivity of the fin
material are 140W/m2K and 55W/mK respectively. Determine
1. Temperature at the end of the fin.
2. Temperature at the middle of the fin
3. Total heat dissipated by the fin
