Multiplication

MULTIPLICATION - is simply repeated addition. So instead of adding numbers repeatedly,

just multiply.

PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION
1. Commutative Property
Changing the order of the factors does not affect the product.
Ex. 8 x 7 = 7 x 8 (2 x 3) x 4 = 4 x (3 x 2)
56 56 24 24
2. Associative Property
Changing the grouping of the factors does not affect the product.
Ex. 2 x (9 x 7) = (2 x 9) x 7 (3 x 5) x 10 = 3 x (5 x 10)
126 126 150 150
3. Identity Property
The product of any number and one is the number itself.
Ex. 312 x 1 = 312
2 000 000 x 1 = 2 000 000
4. Zero Property
The product of any number and zero is always zero
Ex. 425 x 0 = 0
10 152 179 x 0 = 10 152 179
5. Distributive Property
a) Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition
Ex. 2 x (5 + 4) = 18 (6 + 10) x 5 = 80
(2 x 5) + (2 x 4) (6 x 5) + (10 x 5)
10 + 8 = 18 30 + 50 = 80
b) Distributive Property of multiplication over Subtraction
Ex. 8 x (7 - 3) = 32 (12 - 8) x 9 = 36
(8 x 7) - (8 x 3) (12 x 9) - (8 x 9)
56 - 24 = 32 108 - 72 = 36

Multiply vertically to find the product of each number.

1. 2 436 x 27 2. 34 276 x 83 3. 62 538 x 46

4. 2 321 x 324 5. 54 369 x 154 6. 965 875 x 962

6. 688 789 x 456 8. 983 124 x 782 9. 684 729 x 568

Use the properties of multiplication to identify the missing numbers.

1. 6 x 8 = (6 x 4) + (6 x _____) 6. 3 x 7 = 7 x _____

2. 9 x 2 = _____ x 9 7. 4 x (2 x 6) = (_____ x 2) x 6

3. 3 x (5 x 4) = (3 x 5) x _____ 8. 9 x 7 = (9 x 5) + (_____x 2)

4. 2 x (6 x 5) = (_____ x 6) x 5 9. 3 x 9 = (3 x 5) + (3 x _____)

5. 6 x 3 = 3 x _____ 10. 3 x 8 = (3 x 5) + (_____ x 3)

Give the value of n. then on the line before each number, write down the property.
