CHAPTER 3

Research Methodology

This chapter outlines the research methodology employed in this study, providing a detailed
explanation of the approach, design, and procedures used to gather and analyze data. The
chosen methodology is structured to address the research questions and objectives effectively
while ensuring the reliability and validity of the findings. It includes a discussion on the research
design, sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis procedures. The
chapter also highlights the ethical considerations and limitations associated with the study,
ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the research process.

Research Design
This study aims to discover the frequency of absenteeism and its effects on the academic
performance of Senior High School students at Saint Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon
Incorporated (SLMCSI). It employs a descriptive research design, which focuses on examining
and interpreting the patterns of absenteeism and its potential impact on students’ academic
performance. By utilizing purposive sampling, the study specifically targets students who have
experienced varying levels of absenteeism to gain deeper insights into its effects. While this
study is primarily descriptive, it can serve as a foundation for future research that explores
causal relationships between absenteeism and academic outcomes.

Respondents of the study

The study is conducted at Saint Louise De Marillac College of Sorsogon Incorporated
(SLMCSI) Burgos Street, Talisay Sorsogon City which will have respondents of 300 students
from the Senior High School Program of Grade 11 and 12 (STEM, HUMMS ,ABM ,GAS ,TVL).
This meets the requirements for conducting our survey in finding how frequent absenteeism is
among the senior high school program. We chose this location because the students here are
capable of answering our questions and they have enough knowledge in answering so. The
senior high school students here at SLMCSI are needed for our research study as they have
cases of frequent absenteeism.
Research Locale
This research is conducted at Saint Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon Incorporated
(SLMCSI) wherein the respondents required in conducting our survey about discovering the
frequency of absenteeism and its effects on the academic performace of senior high school
students here at SLMCSI campus. We chose the senior high school students because they
have enough knowledge to answer our questions.
Sampling Technique
This research survey will make use of purposive sampling technique to determine the equal
presentation of the student samples per section. Slovin's Formula is the process wherein a
researcher can freely choose its participant. In order to ensure equality of respondent selection
and avoid unbiased, the researcher will assure that all SHS students have equal chances of
being selected to become a study participant. A total of 300 senior high school students were
included in the study, with a 5% margin of error calculated using Slovin's formula. This approach
ensures that the data collected will effectively reflect the relationship between absenteeism and
academic outcomes, allowing for a more accurate analysis of the effect of frequent absenteeism
on students' academic performance.

Research Instrument
To study the frequency and the effects of absenteeism to the academic performance of
senior high school students at Saint Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon Incorporated
(SLMCSI), the researchers have chosen survey questionnaires as a primary source of collected
data. The survey questionnaires are a set of orderly arranged questions carefully prepared to be
answered by the respondents. These instruments were considered as suitable for obtaining
descriptive and comprehensive findings regarding students' absenteeism patterns and its
effects on their academic performance. The researchers will specifically use quantitative
research survey questionnaires for concise and proper data collection. These survey
questionnaires will be measured by the frequency of student’s absenteeism and their habits
which led to it being connected to their academic outcomes. The researchers will conduct a
paper and pencil survey that will use a Likert scale to allow efficient response options such as
(very often, often, sometimes, rarely, and never). These help significantly as they provide
consistent data that can be easily analyzed, and helps identify the patterns and quantify the
relationship between absenteeism and academic performance effectively.
Data Gathering Procedure
This study was conducted at Saint Louise de Marillac College of Sorsogon Incorporated
(SLMCSI), focusing on senior high school students. To collect data, the researchers used
survey questionnaires to understand the frequency of absenteeism of the students and its
effects on the student's academic performance. The researchers first prepared a set of
questionnaires with questions about how often students are absent, why they miss school, and
how it affects their grades. The surveys also included open-ended questions where the students
could share their thoughts on possible solutions to reduce absenteeism. After preparing the
surveys, the researchers selected students from different classrooms to answer the
questionnaires. To save time, they distributed the surveys to one group of students while
moving to another classroom to hand out more. Once the students finished answering, the
researchers collected the completed surveys and thanked the participants for their cooperation.
After gathering all the responses, the researchers organized and analyzed the data to identify
patterns and better understand how absenteeism affects the student's academic
performance. This method ensured that the study collected accurate and useful information to
help address the issue.
Statistical Treatment
To interpret the data effectively, the researchers employed the following statistical treatments:
Slovin's Formula for determining the sample size and descriptive statistics for analyzing academic
performance levels. The Slovin's Formula was used to calculate the number of respondents needed
from the total population, with a margin of error of 5%. The formula is as follows:

Where:

● n is the sample size,

● N is the total population size, and

● e is the margin of error (0.05).

Using this formula, the researchers determined an appropriate sample size for the study

Frequency Distribution Formula:

Where:
● f = percentage frequency or relative frequency (the percentage of occurrences)
● n = the frequency (the number of times a specific value or class interval occurs)
● N = the total number of observations in the dataset
