My topic for this individual report is WATER, FOOD AND AGRICULTURE.

My research question is “How can traditional and indigenous knowledge be integrated
with modern agriculture practices to enhance water sustainability and food production?”
The research question explores integrating traditional and indigenous knowledge into
modern agricultural practices to address global challenges like water scarcity and food
security, highlighting the importance of sustainability and cultural preservation.
These problems, poor hygiene and poor sanitation have a terrible effect on world health,
leading to problems such as 1.6 million accidental deaths annually due to inadequate
access to safe drinking water. Therefore, I aim to decrease the global impact of water
and food shortages.
I felt that researching this topic – Water, Food, and Agriculture would help me better
comprehend some of the most challenging issues facing the planet. These are the three
necessities for all living things to survive. Without these three essential elements, we
develop unknown illnesses, which again cause health issues.
Global Perspectives- The World lacks access to clean water, water Scarcity, and food
shortages.
National Perspectives- India lacks access to safe drinking water and lack of access to
improved sanitation.
Local Perspectives- It lacks access to credit and markets, inadequate infrastructure and
technology, and water scarcity.
Personal Perspectives- I feel that a decrease in soil fertility due to over-fertilization and
pesticide use, are leading contributors to low agriculture productivity.
A few surveys were taken with two people to help me explain what they feel about
Water, Food, and Agriculture in this report.

Evaluation of my report
To create my report, I had to consult books and websites.

Global Perspective
With irrigated agriculture accounting for 20% of all cultivated lands and 40% of global
food output, food security is essential in agriculture. But as the population grows, cities
become more populated, and the climate changes, the need for water is certain to rise.
Agriculture will grow by 70% by 2050, but water must be reallocated from lower to
higher productivity and employment activities by 25–40%. One in four individuals lacks
access to restrooms and handwashing stations, which is a serious problem for access
to safe water and sanitation worldwide. Christian non-profit Life Water International
seeks to provide access to clean water and sanitary facilities to stop the spread of
illness and save lives. Eighty per cent of water collecting is done by women and girls,
who are sensitive to violence or dangerous terrain.
National Perspective
Of its 1.3 billion inhabitants, 91 million (or 6% of the total) lack access to clean water,
and 746 million (or 54% of the total) lack access to adequate home sanitation systems.
Extreme water scarcity, contaminated surface water, and restricted access to piping
water supplies are current problems. The effects of climate change, such as droughts
and rising sea levels, on access to sanitary facilities and clean water are also felt by
families in India.
These factors, together with the Indian government's current pledge to provide tap water
connections to every home by 2024, have created a special feeling of urgency for the
execution of workable solutions to increase access to clean water and sanitary
amenities. 03

Local Perspective
The twin cities are experiencing a growing water deficit due to the rising demand for
drinking water. The waterboard charges $800 per commercial tanker and $500 per
residential tanker, whereas private tankers charge between $800 and $1,000 each
tanker. Officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Works and Sewerage Authority
reported that the demand for private tankers is starting to rise in newly built residences
on the outskirts of the city. In the twin cities' locations where the groundwater level has
increased, the Water Works Department has not provided water delivery. Due to the
situation, residents of the twin cities' suburbs, including Banjara Hills, Yusufguda,
Balnagar, and many other locations, are experiencing water shortages.

Personal Perspective
Soils provide ecosystem services valued at US$11.4
trillion. (A.B. McBratney, 2017)1, supporting human
needs like food, fibre, energy, and infrastructure.

However, the demand for these services is increasing rapidly due to accelerated human
population growth and changing lifestyles, putting pressure on soils to meet the growing
demand for these services.

Solutions for water security and food security are significant in ensuring global health,
as inadequate access to clean water and sanitation contributes to disease spread and

maternal deaths. Although certain human activities have made the water problem
worse, technology has also been developed by humans to more efficiently get or save
freshwater. I feel these solutions to addressing water shortages include dams and
reservoirs, rainwater harvesting, water reuse, and water conservation.
Dams and Reservoirs
They may also be utilized to supply water to cities. Hydroelectricity, flood control, and
recreation are additional advantages of dams and reservoirs. Evaporative water loss in
climates and river channel erosion downstream are two downsides.
Rainwater Harvesting
It involves catching and storing rainwater before it reaches the ground in which the
water is saved for a short period.
Water reuse and conservation
Water reuse refers to reusing water for appropriate purposes such as agriculture,
municipal water supply, industrial processes, and environmental restoration. Water
conservation refers to using less water and using it more efficiently. Gardening offers
several water-saving opportunities.
