Nature and Scope of Human Geo

Human geography examines the interactions between humans and their environment, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the field through systematic and regional perspectives. It encompasses various branches such as economic, cultural, historical, political, population, settlement, and tourism geography, each focusing on different aspects of human activities and their spatial implications. Ultimately, human geography seeks to understand the mutual influence between humans and nature, reflecting the concept of naturalization of humans and humanization of nature.

** Discuss about the Nature and Scope of Human Geography: 10

Introduction :
Human geography the study of man-environment interaction and tots resultant
features in space over time.

However it was defined in variety of ways by renowned geographers like Finch and
Trewartha, E .C. Semple , La Blache , Huntington etc.
Nature of Human Geography:
Human geography studies the inter-relationship between the physical environment
and socio- cultural environment created by human beings through mutual interaction with
each other.
So its nature is interdisciplinary and integrative from the view point of two interrelated
perspectives- systematic and regional.
Accordingly, it has two broad branches: Systematic Geography and Regional Geography.

The focus of Human Geography is humanized space in terms of man-environment

interactions and its nature can be viewed through:

Human ecology: According to Barrows Human Geography is Human Ecology as

conceptually Human Geography and Ecology overlaps with each other.

Man-centred geography: Man and his activities are the priority concern in the study of
Human Geography. as reflected

Social science: Importance of Man-Centered study so obviously it covers the

elements of human society. So by nature it is a social science.

Spatial Science: Study of man-environment interaction and its results on

humanized space.

Terrestrial unity: Geographers like Ratzel, Lablache, Brunhes, Huntington etc.

considered principle of terrestrial unity as fundamental unifying concept of human
geography.

Scope of Human Geography:

This gives wide scope of study in various branches as follows:
Economic Geography: It is the study of all types of economic activities and their
1
distribution over space and determining factors behind each.

It has following subdivisions : Agricultural , Industrial, Commercial , Transport -

Communication and Regional Geography.
Cultural Geography: It focuses on causes of spatial variation in Ethnicity, language, religion,
music, economy, and other cultural phenomena .

Historical Geography: It is the study of changing patterns of humanized space over time.

Political Geography: It studies political events on space, boundaries, relations between

neighbours, delimitation of constituencies, election process political behaviour of people
etc. .

It has sub branches like Electoral Geography, Geopolitics, Military Geography etc.

Population Geography: It is the study of population growth, distribution, and ither

dynamics over space and time.

Settlement Geography: It studies the characteristics of rural and urban settlements, their
distribution, patterns, causes of formation, functions and other related aspects.
It has two sub-fields: Rural and Urban Geography.
Tourism Geography: It is the study of travel and tourism as an industry, as a human activity,
and especially as a place -based experience and impact of tourism on nature.

Conclusion:

Thus nature-dependent humanized space and activities gradually finds the way to
explore almost everything using the possibilities given by nature and thus brings the
essence of Naturalisation of Humans and Humanisation of Nature.
