Problem # 2: Copper and aluminum rods of equal diameter are fixed between rigid
walls, and are separated by a gap δ = 0.008". The copper has an elastic modulus EC
= 17x106 psi and a thermal expansion coefficient αC = 9.4x10-6/°F, while the
aluminum has an elastic modulus EA = 10.1x106 psi and a thermal expansion
coefficient αA = 13.1x10-6/°F.
a) Determine the minimum uniform temperature rise T required to close the gap.
b) Suppose the temperature rise is exactly twice that calculated in part a). Determine
the following:
i) The normal stress in each rod.
ii) The final length of each rod.
