Geology Lab 4

The document details a laboratory exercise conducted by Raboon Redar Muhammed at Soran University, focusing on the Time-Temperature Index (TTI) of maturity in petroleum geology. It includes data on various geological periods, thicknesses, and temperature intervals to construct a burial history curve and calculate the present day TTI for the Jurassic bed. The exercise also involves calculating the geothermal gradient using surface and bottom hole temperatures.

Title: Time-Temperature Index (TTI) of maturity

Lab Number: 4

Name: Raboon Redar Muhammed

Lab Date: 02/10/2019

Supervisor(s): Dr. Ayad Nuri

Mr. Rawezh
Exercise: An exploration well was drilled in a new oil field, the following boundaries are
noted.
Period M.Y. Thickness (m)

Eocene 55 1500

Paleocene 10 800

Up-Cretaceous 35 900

L. Cretaceous 40 800

Unconformity 20 0.0

Jurassic 50 1000

Construct a family of burial history curve and calculate the present day (TTI) for Jurassic bed. If you

know that surface temperature equal 25°C and corrected BHT = 125°C.

Temp-Interval rn rn Δti TTI=(rn x Δti) Σ TTI

In order to construct a family of burial history curve, a 2D graph with Million Years (M.Y) at high x-axis and
the thickness of the deposition (Depth) in meter (m) at the right side y-axis is needed just like the graph
above. As it can be seen, Eocene has deposited 1500m 55 M.Y ago, so do the others (Paleocene, Up-
Cretaceous, L. Cretaceous, and Jurassic) with different thicknesses. But there hasn't been any deposition 20
M.Y ago as it's called unconformity.

In case to calculate the present day (TTI) for the Jurassic bed, the help of surface temperature (S.T) which is
equal to 25°C, corrected bottom hole temperature (BHT) which is equal to 125°C and the total depth (T.B)
which is 5000m is needed to find the Geothermal Gradient (G.G).
