EXAM 4: Monday December 7, 2:45pm-4:00pm
FINAL EXAM: Thursday December 10, time TBD
Knowledge Check: In the very first class, you will take an important knowledge check. This may allow you to
skip some of the content in the course. As the semester progresses, there will be other required Knowledge
checks. KCs identify the material that you have mastered and that you have learned but not mastered. Based
on these checks, you will have to go back and repeat material that you may have seen but did not thoroughly
learn. For that reason, concentrate on making sure you understand things.
Required Course Work: This course is very time intensive. For each hour you spend in class, you are expected
to spend another three hours outside of class working on the material. However, depending on your level of
preparation, you may have to spend more time in order to progress satisfactorily or you may spend less time
because you come in knowing a lot. Each assignment has a due date, and missing the due date for a chapter
objective will reduce the points you get for completing the objective. Missing the due date for a quiz means
that you get a zero for that quiz. Hard work is important but it does not guarantee you the grade that you
want. If you find you are not progressing as you would like, it is up to you to seek more help from your
instructor or from the Dolciani Mathematics Center. Do not fall behind. We built in a little extra time in the
beginning so you can get used to the pace. The schedule for the end of the course is very tight. Plan ahead.
Class Policy:
1. This course is a synchronous course, you are expected to attend classes twice a week via Zoom at the
specified time. Log into Zoom 5 minutes in advance in case of any technical or logistical difficulty.
2. You do not need to turn on your camera during any class except during the 4 exams and the final
exam. I will record each class and share the recording, together with the slides/documents I used for
that class with you after each class.
3. Students who turn their cameras on will have their images/videos included in the class recordings.
4. You are expected to have access to a desktop, laptop, or tablet throughout the semester. Your
device's built-in microphone typically suffices. A set of headphones with a microphone may offers an
improvement on audio quality.
5. Unless otherwise instructed, all students are muted during class. If you have a question, use the
“Raise Hand” feature of Zoom or type your question in the chat, I will unmute you and answer your
question. All public chats are saved.
Grading Policy:
Mastery Work on 35% You receive 25% credit for completing work by the given due dates; and an
ALEKS objectives additional 10% by the end of the semester. If you did not complete any of the
objectives by their due dates, you will lose the corresponding percentage in
the 25%, but you can still gain the additional 10% if you complete all
objectives by the end of the semester.
Scheduled 5% There are four (4) scheduled knowledge checks (KC) during the semester after
Knowledge Check the initial one. Each receives a maximum of one point depending upon your
mastery of the material at that time. Take these seriously because they may
cause you to redo material that you have learned but not yet mastered. If you
miss them, you miss the points.
Quizzes 10% You will take quizzes throughout the course. Study for them like they are real
exams. They are to let you know what you know and what you still need to
work on before you take your exam. The quizzes can be taken 2 times, as long
as it is done by the due date. Your final score is the MEAN of the two exams.
The lowest three quiz grades (out of 15 assigned quizzes) will be dropped at
the end of the semester. The quizzes count 10% of your grade.
Exams 30% There are four (4) exams on the material you are covering in ALEKS. See the
syllabus summary for dates. The exams count 30% of the grade altogether.
The lowest score is dropped.
Data Activities 10% You and your class will be using SPSS to analyze data during the semester.
Your instructor will model what a statistician does when confronted with a
new data set. Four class periods will be set aside for this. The write-up of the
analysis will be your assignment. The data part of the course counts 10% of
your grade.
Final Exam 10% The final exam date for all but Saturday classes is the Thursday Reading Day,
December 10. Your instructor will give you additional information about this.
This exam is 10% of the final grade.
Extra Credit 0-5 Students who participate in class regularly during the semester (asking
Points questions, answer questions given by the instructor .etc) will gain up to 5
points added towards their total score.
Letter grades are determined by the standard Hunter College system of grading:
A+ = 97.5 -- 100; A = 92.5 -- 97.4; B+ = 87.5 -- 89.9; B = 82.5 -- 87.4; B- = 80 -- 82.4; C+ = 77.5 -- 79.9; C = 70 --
77.4; D = 60 -- 69.9; F = 0 -- 59.9.
1. There are 4 exams and the final exam. There are no make-up exams this semester. We will drop the
lowest grade, so if you miss an exam, that is the grade that is dropped. If you miss two exams, one is
dropped, the other is a zero. If you miss an exam and desire a CR/NC grade, that will have to be
approved by both your instructor and the coordinator and will only be allowed in extraordinary
circumstances.
2. Grades: Details of regular letter grading appears earlier in this syllabus.
a. The last day to withdraw from the course with a grade of W is Tuesday, November 5.
b. Students wishing to request IN grades must put their request in writing and you and your
instructor must sign an 'Incomplete Contract' in order for that grade to be given. You must
have a C average at the time of the request and must have completed at least 2 exams and 9
of the 15 quizzes given by that time and must be on schedule with your work in ALEKS.
c. If you want to request a CR/NC grade, you must have completed ALL the requirements for the
course and you must take the final exam and hand in the data assignments. This includes
meeting the scheduled dates for submission of the ALEKS material. The required form for this
must be given to your instructor BEFORE the final exam starts. You may get this form online
or email the instructor with “CR/NC grade” as the subject.
d. If you stop attending and do not complete the course work or officially withdraw you will
receive a grade of WU.
Emergency Situatons:
We have all dealt with emergency situations this past year, including power and internet outages. IF that
happens to you, either causing you to miss class or giving you problems during an exam, you need to
communicate clearly with your professor about your situation as soon as it is rectified. Don’t wait until the
end of the semester to list out all the reasons you were not able to be a part of the class.
Calculators:
ALEKS Calculators are allowed during the exams for certain problems. Other calculators, phones and tablets
are not allowed during exams. SPSS is not allowed during exams. Excel is not allowed during exams. If you
have to do calculations by hand on the Quizzes, expect to do the same kind of calculations on the exam. And
show that work on your scrap paper.
If you are caught cheating on a quiz, test, exam or a project, you will fail the course and disciplinary charges
may be brought against you. If you are caught copying someone else's work or googling answers while
taking an exam or turning in someone else's project as your own, you will be charged with academic
dishonesty. That may result in receiving a lowered letter grade, failing the course, or possibly being
dismissed depending on the charges. You are expected to do your own work. You may receive help from
others in order to learn material but 'help' is different from turning in someone else's work and claiming it
is your work. You may not have someone else other than you do your work in ALEKS. If you do not know
the difference between getting help to learn and cheating, please speak with me directly.
