Hour: ___
Increasing Biodiversity Project
Goal:
● Develop a way to increase the biodiversity at or around school.
Directions:
● Decide if you are going to work alone or with one other person.
● Review the ways that humans reduce biodiversity in ecosystems.
● Develop a project that could increase biodiversity at or around school, it doesn’t have to
actually happen, however it needs to be reasonable (example: it is not reasonable to
remove paper towels or grow a forest over the football field).
● Decide how you are going to present your information to the class: newspaper article,
poster, slides presentation, video or another approved method.
● Include all of the required pieces of information.
Required Information:
● What is your idea? ● What are some positive and negative
● How can it increase biodiversity? (pros/cons) effects of your project
● How could it be accomplished? ● Have other schools or communities
● What would it’s approximate cost be? tried something like this?
● Who would be responsible for keeping ● Include a bibliography
it going?
Where to Start:
● Define Biodiversity: ______________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
● Why is biodiversity important? ______________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
● Humans have reduced biodiversity by:
○ Destroying habitat (places animals call home)
○ Pollution (oil spills, toxic waste, fertilizer, plastic)
○ Climate Change (caused by greenhouse gasses from combustion)
○ Overfishing, invasive species, removing predators
● Look at the list above, decide which area you want to work on reducing. _____________
● List out a couple of ideas that would reduce the effects of the area you chose at school.

______________________________________________________________________
● Choose your favorite idea and ask the following questions:
○ Could it increase biodiversity?
○ Is it reasonable?
