Lecture_25

The document discusses the equations of motion for coupled oscillators, including three-mass and n-mass systems, and explores their normal modes and eigenvalues. It also explains the relationship between oscillations and waves, emphasizing that waves are disturbances that transfer energy without moving mass. Additionally, it outlines the derivation of the wave equation from n-coupled mass oscillators and the importance of spatial dependence in wave behavior.

Oscillations to Waves
How are they related?

A wave can be thought of as a disturbance or

oscillation that travels through space-time,
accompanied by a transfer of energy.

19
If the direction of wave propagation is parallel to the direction it
oscillates then its called a Longitudinal waves.

Longitudinal waves

A wave does not move mass in the direction of

propagation; it transfers energy.
