Math Gym FALL 21 Problem Set 5.docx

The document outlines exercises for a math course, focusing on function compositions, difference quotients, and creating problems based on given functions. It includes a table of values for functions f and g, instructions for simplifying a difference quotient, and a task to design similar problems using consistent functions. Additionally, it features a concept map exercise and a challenge question related to the resistance of blood flow in vessels.

MAC 1105 MATH GYM FALL 2021 WEEK 5

1. Given the table of values, find the outputs of the given compositions for the given inputs.

X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
f(x) 11 9 9 5 3 1 -1

2. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 13𝑥 − 25
Find and simplify the difference quotient

Initial Evaluation: Write what you expect your final answer to look like:

6x+3h+13

Write down each step Explain why your step gets you closer to
an answer
Final Evaluation: Did your final answer match what you expected in your initial
evaluation?

3. Below are several problem types that you have seen involving composition of functions. For all
three problems (Problem Type 1, Problem Type 2, and Problem Type 3), the functions f and g are
different from problem to problem. Your task is to create a set of 3 problems similar to the ones
below but using the same f and g functions from problem to problem. I.e. the f function in your
Problem Type 1 should be the same function f in Problem Type 2 and 3. Likewise with the g
function. Note the f function that you select needs to be different from the g function.

Danger! Go back and read the instructions! You are not supposed to solve the problems below!!!! You
are supposed to design functions f and g (and the subsequent graphs and numbers) that would work
for all three problems. Note that each of your representations of the composition functions should
have the same output for a given input.
