Traditional Knowledge (TK): Traditional knowledge refers to the know-how, skills, practices, and beliefs developed and passed down through
generations in specific cultural or community contexts. This knowledge often relates to agriculture, health, environmental management, and
resource use.

Scope of Application:

Healthcare: Use of medicinal plants and traditional healing systems (e.g., Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine).
Agriculture: Indigenous practices for crop rotation, pest control, and soil fertility management.
Environmental Conservation: Knowledge about sustainable water usage, forest management, and biodiversity preservation.
Cultural Preservation: Craftsmanship, folklore, and other intangible cultural heritage.
Pharmaceuticals: Basis for research into new drugs and therapies
Ans 2-

Case Study: Turmeric Patent Case In 1995, two non-resident Indians were granted a US patent for using turmeric powder for wound healing.
This sparked controversy as turmeric has been traditionally used in India for centuries for the same purpose.

Issue: The patent ignored India's traditional knowledge.

Resolution: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in India challenged the patent. Evidence from ancient Sanskrit texts and
other traditional sources was presented, leading to the revocation of the patent.
Importance of IPR:
Protects traditional knowledge from exploitation.
Prevents biopiracy.
Ensures fair compensation for indigenous communities.

Ans 3.

Sustainability Concept: Sustainability refers to meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their own needs. Traditional communities often exemplify sustainable practices as they rely on renewable resources and maintain a balance
with their environment.
Examples:

Tribal Agriculture: Slash-and-burn (shifting cultivation) with fallow periods for soil recovery.
Water Management: Indigenous systems like step wells (baolis) in India and qanats in Iran.
Biodiversity Conservation: Sacred groves and taboos against cutting certain trees or hunting specific animals.
Craftsmanship: Using eco-friendly and locally sourced materials in handicrafts.

Impact on Sustainability: Traditional practices help preserve biodiversity, promote ecological balance, and offer models for sustainable living in
modern contexts.
