Practical Research 1

This research study explores the perceptions and experiences of students regarding parental expectations and their impact on academic performance, social relationships, and personal well-being. It aims to identify the effects of these expectations on students, including potential distress and anxiety, and seeks to understand how students cope with them. The study is grounded in parental involvement theory and highlights the significance of understanding these dynamics for students, parents, teachers, and future researchers.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION:
Nowadays, a lot of students faces different parent’s expectation that affects their daily

livings especially as a students in terms of their social relationship, academic performance, and

well being. Parent’s expectation refers to the belief and hopes that parents have for their children.

Aside from that, parent’s expectation has a big role and impact on their children in terms of

Academic performance, social relationship with others and as well as to their personal well-

being. The different types of parental expectation that students believed their parents hold for

them and to identify which type of believed parental expectation elicits student distress, anxiety

and depression, Hangen (2019). This study shows that parent’s expectation has several effects in

the student’s distress and academic performance.

Moreover, according to Linberg E. (2019). “Implying that the expectations and

aspirations of the parents for their children are highly parallel to each other. Furthermore, it was

shown that, children’s year end grades are higher than their parent expectation at the biggening

of the year”. However, the research also indicated that parents and children’s aspirations and

expectations were not always matching and that parental expectation were higher than children’s

own expectation and aspirations for their future, Linberg E. (2019).

However, based on the researchers that has been mentioned, there is one thing that

have’nt addressed in their studies that the researcher would also like to tackle, which is the

question, what are the things that the students can/must do to overcome to negative effects of

parent’s expectation in their lives.

This research study that is entitled as Exploring the perception and experience of the

students regarding parent’s expectation aims to examine and explore the live experiences of the
students and the effects of parent expectation on them, as well as what are the things they do to

face/handle their parent expectation. Aside from that, we all know that parent’s expectation has

a big impact on the students and nowadays a lot of students experience this kind of treatment

from their parents that’s why the researchers would like to tackle this research study.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

SOP 1: What is the experience of students regarding parent’s expectation in term’s of:

1.1: Academic performance

1.2: Social relationship

1.3: Personal well being

SOP 2: How do students perceived and interpret the parent’s expectation they encounter in terms

of:

1.1: Personal well being

1.2: Personal choices

1.3: Self esteem

SOP 3: What are the implications of high and low parent’s expectation on the students:

1.1: Academic performance

1.2: Social behavior

1.3: Well-being
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This research study is based on the parental involvement theory (Grolnick theory) of

Grolnick and Slowiaczek (1994) as the devotion of resources by the parent to the child within a

given domain. Their study conceptualized three (3) dimensions of parent’s school involvement:

(a) behavior, (b) cognitive – intellectual, (c) personal. This study supports our work/research that

is about parent’s expectation to their children in many aspects like Academic performance, well-

being and social relationship. Furthermore, this theory states that parent’s expectation has a

impact on the school and academic performance of their children. Aside from that, our study is

also related to the Sletten and Anxiety theory by Sigmund Freud (2010), it states that parent’s

expectation can leads into parental pressure that is a condition perceived by children as an

indicating expectation of unlikely, even unattainable heights of accomplishment. In addition, it

says that parental pressure and expectation are creating a generation of disconnected and robotic

children.

The figure (1) shows the relationship of the theories that the researcher have mentioned in

the study. This two (2) theories are both refers to the parents expectation on their children in

terms of their academic performance, well-being, and social behavior. It also answers the

question, “What is the parents expectation to their children?” Which is also the question in the

study.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:

This research

study has two (2) variables which is (I) parent’s expectation: and (2) students: It simply says that

parent’s expectation has effect on their children in terms of academic performance; social

behavior; well-being. It explores the relationship between parent’s expectation (independent

variable) and the students (dependent variable) in terms of their academic performance, well

being, and social behavior/relationship.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

For the STUDENTS, they will be able to identify the effect of parent’s expectation not

only in their Academic performance but also in their personal well-being and social relationship

with others. Aside from that, they will also benefit in this study by gathering and gaining

information on how to handle their parent’s expectation.

For the PARENTS, they will be able to know that their expectation had several effects on

their children’s. Furthermore, they would understand the conditions of their children whether

they are okay or not regarding their expectations.

For the TEACHERS, they will understand the conditions of their students or why they

act and behave the way they do the in school. Moreover, they would also understand the

student’s experiences and they can find a way to help/treat them for the better.

For the FUTURE RESEARCHER, they will be able to find and gather more

information in case that they want to study and tackle the same topic in the future.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS:

.This research aims to know the effects of parent’s expectation on their children’s

different aspect; (1) Academic performance; (2) social relationship; and (3) well-being, as well as
their experience. This study focuses on the experiences of Grade 11 Senior High School students

of Cabacao National High School in SY 2023-2024. This study excludes the Grade XII Senior

High School students and Junior High School students. We will used estimated sample size 5

students to gather more information in our research study.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

1. Parent’s Expectation – Refer to the belief and hopes that parents have for their children

2. Students/Children- (1) the one who attends a school (2) one who studies.

3. Explore/exploring- to investigate, study or analyze a certain topic.

4. Academic performance -is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has

attained their short or long terms educational goals.

5. Perception- the way an individual thinks the sees a certain thing or the impression they

have of it.

CHAPTER II:

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES:

This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or conclusions,

methodologies and others. Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing

information that are relevant and similar to the present study. Aside from that, all information

helps to support the research problem of the study.

According to the study of Sollars & Valerie (2023); children’s achievements in ECEC;
Parents expectations; concludes that such "expectation have an impact on academic
achievements of their children". This study states that high expectation is also recommended for
parents but it must be based on reality and contextualized which respect ang acknowledge the
children/ student's abilities and learning. Additionally, this study simply denotes that parent's
expectation can affect their children’s achievements either positively and negatively which also
helps to answer the research SOP and that is what is the affect’s of Parent's expectation regarding
their children’s academic performance?. This study says that high parent's expectation can helps
to boost the ability of a student’s resulting in a higher chance of achievements. Somehow, high
parent's expectation can also cause a student’s self -pettiness or lack of self- confidence that may
result in a mental pressure.

More over, Hangen(2019) concludes that parents plays an important role as they are the one
who is also has a big contribution in their children’s. This study states that parent's expectations
is one of the contributor in students distress, anxiety and depression aside from it's academic
impact. This research study simply says that Parent's expectation also affects the
children/students psychological condition or well- being. It helps to support and answer the
present research's question for how does parent's expectations involved in the mental state of the
student.
