Today, I would like to talk about one of these social media platforms

which I also happen to use from time to time.

This social media network, I like to use, is Facebook. Of course, I

don’t really think that I need to reintroduce the mighty Facebook to
anybody, but just in case if somebody doesn’t know, it is the most
popular social media networking site that started its journey in
California, USA
Since then, Facebook didn’t really have the time to look back as the
number of its users started to grow exponentially. Today, with more
than 2.25 billion monthly users worldwide
There are a number of benefits of using Facebook. For example, it is
really easy to get started on this networking site, and it supports all
kinds of content formats, such as text, images, videos, live videos
and stories. Besides, it also allows people to connect and
communicate with others, speaking different languages, from all
over the world, thanks to its translation feature.

Anyway, this website helps me in a great way by keeping me in

touch with my loved ones at all times and at no extra cost. Besides,
it also allows me to remain updated with trending news on health,
food, fashion, sports and lifestyles, among many other things.
Finally, it also helps me in sharing important ideas and information
with others to rally their supports to bring positive changes in our
life.

: What types of websites are popular among your generation?

I think that websites with information about how to do things are really
trendy, for example, youtube short recipes and how to make certain
dishes or how to make clothes with tutorials to follow. People are
finding new hobbies through looking at websites and learning how to
develop new skills.

Is using the Internet a social or solitary activity? Why?

In my opinion, I think that it depends on what you are doing, for

instance, if you are at university and working on a group project, then
you may have to work with your peers to find information. However, for
most people it is a solitary experience, working with your desktop,
tablet or phone to find out whatever information you are looking for.

How has the Internet changed social behaviour?

Before the internet people interacted much more when meeting up

and going out together, now you see people glued to their phone
screens. Their focus is on their social media apps looking at what their
friends and family are doing through photos and status updates, rather
than actually talking to them. Communication is mostly through social
media, with instant chat cutting the need for face to face meetings.

Should companies check job applicants’ online profiles? Why/Why not?

It’s not unreasonable for employers to do this, however, I think that

what people share online may not be the whole picture of how they
behave at work. For example, seeing photographs of a person on a
night out with friends acting silly, does not mean that they will act like
that in the workplace. It can give the employer a wider sense of the
persons personality and interests so that they can see if they really are
who they say they are

What is the purpose of advertising?

I believe that ads aim to inform the consumers about a certain product
and convince customers, chang the belief about a certain brand,
enhance the image of the company, point out and create a need for
products or services, Some advertisements may also want to
demonstrate new uses for established products and send a reminder to
use an existing product.

How have advertisements changed since you were a child?

Advertisements have changed significantly over the years since I was a

child. For a starter, when I was a child, if I remember correctly, there
were only TV and print media to show us the advertisements, but
today there are computers, smartphones, Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram also on which advertisements are being displayed
continuously. We can also see billboards, neon signs, and other vibrant
and visually captivating printed designs, that are placed at strategic
locations with high volumes of human traffic, which were not seen
when I was a child.

Do advertisements give correct information, or do they encourage people to buy things that they
may not need?

I think some do and some don’t, but it’s difficult to know which are
giving us the correct information. For example, the skin whitening
products – I do not believe that these work but we see them everywhere
in Asian countries, and we are encouraged to buy them even though they
are not actually necessary. The adverts, though, tell us they are
necessary as they will improve our lives and we will become more
accepted and successful.

This then, is an example of advertising encouraging people to buy

something they do not need
