Contents Page Analysis
Contents Page Analysis
Issue information
On the contents page of my magazine, the Contents Title is at the top left of the contents
page in a black font which stands out on the page. This makes the Contents Title
conventional. The font type used for the Contents Title is different to the other font type used
on the contents page which is another way to make the Title stand out. The connotations of
this include unique which helps signify to the reader’s what the content in the magazine is
like.
On my contents page, the Image of the Front Cover is next to the Contents Title to the right-
hand side of it and shows all the different variants of the front cover. One way in which the
Image of the front cover is conventional is because it appears on the contents page and is
much smaller on the contents page than the Contents Title. The use of putting the Image of
the front cover next to the Contents Title helps to gravitate the reader’s attention towards the
Title and also the image as well. And due to the Front cover image being much smaller
compared to the actual Front Cover helps to not draw too much attention away from what
else is on the contents page but also adds familiarity on the page as well. This helps to
remind the readers of one of the thing’s the magazine is recommending you to read in the
magazine. The Image of the front cover being on the contents page connotes variety, this is
because due to it showing all the different versions of the Eternals Front Cover it also shows
the reader’s that there is a lot of variety in Total Film magazine’s helping to persuade people
to buy their magazine.
Issue Information
On the contents page, the issue information is the information of when the magazine was
issued, such as what day, month, year it was issued. It is also smaller than the “contents”
text but the issue information is usually positioned near it.
On the Contents page, the Issue Information is above the Contents Title in a reddish font
which helps to make it stand out on the magazine. This makes the Issue Information
conventional. And due to the Font style being different to the Contents Title, this also helps
the Issue Information stand out on the Contents Title as well. The Issue Information has
connotations, being recent, new and relevant. This helps signify to the reader’s that the
contents within the magazine isn’t outdated but instead content that covers shows and
movies that have come out in recent months.
Multiple images
The multiple images show and illustrate the multiple articles on the page and magazine, it is
conventionally positioned together instead of being far apart and they will also usually be
relevant mis en scene that conveys the genre. And they have to be interesting as well.
In my magazine, there are multiple images which correlate to the articles within the
magazine, this helps to make the images within the contents page conventional. The
Multiple images also help to make the contents page stand out; this is by the various colour
pallets within the images. For example, one of the images on my contents page contains a
blue and black colour scheme whilst another one is more greyish yellow. The use of the
different colour pallets in the Multiple images connotes variety within the magazine, this is
another way in which the contents page tries to signify to the reader’s that the content within
Total Film’s magazine has a lot of variety and includes something everyone will appeal to.
On my Contents Page, the page number is clearly visible due to the colouring of the text
being black and it being on top of a white circle. However, for one of the page numbers it is
inverted so instead of the text being black it is white and the white circle changed into a
black circle. The colouring of the page numbers and what they are positioned on helps them
stand out on the contents page and helps to grab the reader’s attention towards the picture
as well. The page numbers are conventional because they show the audience what page the
article is on, for example on my contents page there is a picture of the show ‘Eternals’ with
the Page Number being 34 which is where the article about the show starts. Also on the
Eternals picture, it also includes a caption saying “Feels like forever” which is used to appeal
to the reader’s as it is showing to the readers that the contents that it is showing is that good
that it feels like forever since it’s been that good.
Column Layout
The column layout conventionally is three columns on a page and these are used to create
the structure and order on the contents page, this helps the audience to use and read the
contents page more easily.
On my contents page, there are column layouts however there isn’t three on a page but wo
on the left-hand side and one on the right-hand side, for all of the column layouts they are
written with the same font, colour scheme and size which make them look the same so
people know what they are. They are also simple to read so the readers don’t get
overwhelmed by them. The column layouts have connotations of being simplistic and
original, which helps to signify to the reader’s that the content within the column layout is all
original and wasn’t copied from other articles.
Repetition of Masthead
The repetition of the Masthead is something at the top of the page
near the “contents title”.
On the contents page, the page number and any additional information is found on the
bottom left and right of the content page and is conventional because the size of the text is
much smaller than the other text on the contents page and it includes the name of the
magazine company. The text being in all caps helps to make it stand out and adds
importance to the text and what it is trying to show to the audience. And the magazine
company ‘Total Film’ is written in a bold font to help it stand out even further.
Layout of articles
The layout of the articles on the content page includes the page number first, then followed
by the articles name/title which is usually in a bigger, bolder text and also is presented in a
different colour font to the main body text. It is also presented in a simple and plain font. It
helps to give information about the articles included in the magazine.
On the contents page, the layout of the articles includes the page number followed by the
title of the article which makes it conventional and the page number where you can find the
article is written in a bold, red font which helps it stand out on the contents page. The Title of
the article is also written in a bold font but black instead of red which helps it to not blend in
with the page number and shows the audience what the article is about. The article connotes
variety and helps to signify to the audience the content that is included in the magazine and
the variety Total Film covers.
Section heading
The section heading is text that is used to separate the articles into sections, it helps to
create order on the contents page and for the audience. It will often be linked to regular and
feature content. The text is smaller than the contents title but bigger than the main body text
as well.
House style
The house style includes the style of fonts, layout, colour schemes and language. It is the
style of the magazine and the style will usually fit the genre of the magazines and also the
target audience.
On my magazine, there are multiple pictures on the contents page which shows some of the
content within the magazine issue, the pictures also correspond to what the text is on the
contents page as well. The multiple images help to show the readers what the articles are
about within the magazine. Most of the text on the contents page is in a black, simplistic font
which helps to make the text not blend in with the white background and some of the black
text is in a bold font which helps to separate different points for the reader’s and to help
make sure the readers are not overwhelmed. The number text next to the bold, black text is
in a maroon red font which helps to make it stand out due to the fact that the numbers help
to guide the reader’s what page the articles are on.
