IN HOW THE
AUTOCRATIC
LEADERSHIP STYLE
AFFECTS STAFF
MORALE
1
OBJECTIVES
1. To find out how the autocratic leadership style affects the staff morale in medium
sized businesses.
2
BACKGROUND
Autocratic leadership style is often associated with negative performance, and a complex
leader – follower relationship. For example, The history of autocratic leadership can be traced
back to ancient civilizations, where rulers like Egyptian pharaohs, Roman emperors like
Julius Caesar, and monarchs in Mesopotamia, Persia, and China wielded absolute power,
style; this pattern continued through various historical periods, with notable examples
including Louis XIV of France and more recent figures like Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin,
who used extreme forms of autocratic control in their respective regimes. The Autocratic
leadership style is important as students learn how it affects staff morale in the school
system ,with staff and teachers which in turn influences their learning environment, if staff
morale is too low meaning that staff and teachers are unsatisfied with their work it may in
turn affect the overall performance of students in institutions. This research is particularly
important for us as it provides useful insights on the effects of the Autocratic leadership style,
pertaining to staff morale it is important in workplaces such as Factories where strict rules are
given and are to be followed for worker's safety. This Autocratic Leadership style and its
impact on staff morale affects not only students but also society at a whole in general, at
times little to no input from workers is necessary for the overall efficiency for the conduct of

METHODOLOGY
The research employed questionnaires and an interview as data collection instruments. A
questionnaire was chosen due to its efficiency in gathering a broad range of data within a
limited period asking an extent of 10 closed-ended survey questions by using a multiple-
choice format, making it suitable for the scope of this study. An interview was chosen due to
its flexibility and ability to adapt to the flow of conversations, we used a total of 5 open-
ended questions for the interview, this research was conducted on November 22nd, 2024, at
2DS PIZZA located in Triple Plaza, shop #5 Highgate P.O. St. Mary. The interview process
took 38 minutes while the questionnaire took a total of 10 minutes.
This study focuses on examining the impact of autocratic leadership styles on staff morale
within medium-sized businesses. Given the relevance of the topic, the questionnaire was
deemed an effective tool to reach a larger audience quickly. It included both open- and
closed-ended questions to facilitate the collection of clear and candid responses from
employees and managers of the businesses involved. The reason of why we choose 2DS
PIZZA for our SBA is because it was closet to us and it meet the standards that we needed to
do the investigation; it was our group member Kahleem Rose who selected the business.
Research was conducted with 2DS PIZZA’s business owners and managers to obtain detailed
information on how leadership styles may influence or inhibit creativity. This approach
allowed for a comprehensive understanding, supplementing the broader data gathered from
the questionnaire and the interview. The collected data will be presented through various
visual representations, including pie charts, bar graphs, etc. to allow for clear and effective
analysis. We encountered several limitations in the research such as: late responses from
personnel which impacted the quality of the research, location of the organization was
overcrowded with members of the public at the time we wanted to conduct research, group
members weren’t able to help effectively carry out the research due to no internet access and
no available device to use.

PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA
This topic has shown how the autocratic leadership style affects staff morals in a medium
sized business. As we all know the autocratic leadership style is a leadership style where a
leader exerts absolute control and unquestioning obedience from subordinates. While the
autocratic leadership style is not the most popular leadership style it is one of the most
effective, this is shown with the questionnaire and interview that was done, most of the
participants agreed that the autocratic leadership style was preferably for their work
environment while others were not sure or did not want this type of leadership style. If they
could choose another leadership style, they said it would be the democratic leadership style
which is understandable. Some of the problems they face with the autocratic leadership style
is because the lack of input sometimes which is said by some of the employees to be a

QUESTION #4
How motivated are you for work?
Figure 1
The above bar graph provides an illustration on Worker’s Motivation towards their work, 3
respondents chose the category “Not very engaged” whilst 1 respondent selected “Somewhat
motivated”, leaving the other two options at 0. The modal option for the respondents is the
option “Not very engaged.” Based on the graph most workers were not engaged for their
work this problem can be solved by implementing certain strategies such as regular
recognition and appreciation opportunities for growth, healthy work-life balance, and
engagement activities.

Figure 2
The above graph represents whether the lack of input in decision-making affects employee
morale. The responses were categorized into four options which is: “MAYBE”, “NOT
REALLY,” “YES” and “NO.” The collected data illustrated that no respondents selected
“NO” or “MAYBE” while one person chose “NOT REALLY,” and 3 workers indicated
“YES”, which means that they felt a lack of input in the decision-making process, as such
their staff morale was affected negatively. From an analysis the mean response value was 1,
showing that the average respondents leaned fairly towards agreement. The mode or
otherwise known as the most frequent occurring response, Additionally the ratio of “YES”
responses to the total responses was 3:4. This illustrates that most employees think their
morale is affected when they are put in the dark for the decision-making process.

CONCLUSION
Based on our findings my team and I have learned a lot about the autocratic leadership style
and how it affects staff morals. This research has shown us that although the autocratic
leadership style has some short comings like how the boss is the only one that makes the
decisions in the business it also has its own advantages as in quick decisions making for
emergency. But this research has shown that although the boss makes all the decisions the
employees can still voice their opinions to the boss. And in my opinion the autocratic
leadership style is perfectly suit for the place that we had done our research since most of the
