5.2 Insulation Materials

5.2.1 Mineral wool: This material shall have a neutral pH, a nominal density not less than 10 lb/ft3
(160.18 kg/m3) and be suitable for 1200°F (649°C). Insulation shall conform to ASTM C547,
Type 3, or ASTM C612, Type 5.
5.2.2 Alumina silica ceramic fiber: This material shall conform to ASTM C892 with a density of 8 lb/ft3
(128.15 kg/m3) and shall be limited to a maximum service temperature of 2300°F (1260°C).
5.2.3 Fibrous glass felt shall be type “E”, not less than 9 lb/ft3 (144.17 kg/m3), and shall comply with
ASTM C1086, Supplementary Requirements included. Type E fiberglass is incombustible and
has acceptable strength to 800°F (427 ºC), where it still retains 60% of its tensile strength. At
1200°F (649°C), the strength retained is 20%, the melt point is 1530°F (832°C). When used
with a stainless steel insert, the yarn retains much of its strength to 1000°F (538°C). Type E
fiberglass yarn has a low thermal conductivity and is resistant to many solvents and acids. This
product is sensitive to high alkalinity and bases.
5.2.4 Flexible removable insulation blankets shall be fiberglass, limited to a maximum service
temperature of 800°F (427°C). For applications above 800°F (427°C), alumina silica ceramic
fiber blanket shall be used. Flexible Aerogel insulation may also be used for applications above
800°F (427°C). If used, aerogel shall be suitable for a continuous operating temperature of
1200°F (649°C) and comply with ASTM C1728, Type III, Grade 1A.
5.2.5 For temperatures less than 200°F (93°C), a non-hydroscopic insulation that is resistant to
moisture and chemicals shall be used.
5.2.6 Calcium-Magnesium-Silicate wool: This material shall be limited to a maximum service
temperature of 2,200°F (1204°C).
5.3 Insulation Coverings
5.3.1 Metal lagging shall comply with the following specifications, with thickness not less that
indicated:
1) Stainless steel: ASTM A240/A240M, Types 302, 304, or 316. Minimum thickness of 0.010

5.3.2 (*) All metal lagging shall have a vapor barrier of colored polyethylene-surlyn, colored converted
epoxy, or 50 pound polyethylene-kraft paper thermally bonded to the inside surface. Flat stucco
embossed jacketing, or prefabricated lagging sections, shall be used. Where specified by
Owner’s Engineer, the outside of the lagging shall be coated with a color converted epoxy.
5.3.3 Stainless steel jacketing shall be used for removable “boxes” when:
1) Insulating low melting point alloys.
2) The insulation is in a fire exposed area, or considered as fireproofing.
5.3.4 For flexible removable insulation, the outside covering (cold side) shall be 16 oz./yd216 oz./yd2
(0.542 kg/m2) silicone coated fiberglass equal to Alpha Maritex #3259-2-SS or Teflon coated
material equal to Chemfab Q Guard 14 D. See Figure 2A.
5.3.5 The inside covering for flexible insulation shall be as follows (See Figure 2B):

inch (0.3 mm) thick wire, Type 304 up to 800°F (427°C); Type 321 from 801 to 1200°F (427 to
649°C); and Inconel from 1201°F to 1600°F (649 to 871°C).
5.3.7 When the equipment insulation system is considered as fireproofing, and/or for insulation
systems in low melting alloys (such as aluminum), the insulation cover shall be capable of
withstanding the force of firehose stream impingement.
5.3.8 Metal jackets, removable boxes, are required when insulating for noise control or combined
thermal and noise control.
