ANNOTATION 1
The headline of the article that I have read is Hamas After Cease-Fire: Weakened,
Isolated but Still Standing. It was published by Adam Rasgon, a reporter residing
in Jerusalem, on January 16, 2025, in one of the most well-known digital
newspapers The New York Times.
The article touches upon the issue of the current stage of the prolonged Israeli-
Palestinian conflict. The author states that regardless of the reinforced defense of
Israel for the 15 months of intense hostilities, Hamas would be capable of getting
weapon supplies from external actors, predominantly Iran. The recent significant
losses among Hezbollah militants and civilians, the overthrow of the Syrian
dictator, and the intermittent attacks by Houthis in Yemen have drawn considerable
attention. Israel has strategically leveraged these developments.
Recently this week the Hamas and Israeli leaders were conducting negotiations
about a ceasefire treaty, which was later approved by the prime minister of Israel
Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet. Furthermore, the crucial role of Hamas, and
its consequent control over Gaza is widely regarded as a central power.
Conversely, the Palestinian administration is not perceived as a real source of
authority for Palestinians. The article also includes the comments of experts such
as Tamer Qarmout, a professor of public policy at the Doha Institute for Graduate
Studies, and Michael Milshtein, a former military intelligence analyst specializing
in Palestinian affairs. The first outlines that despite the capability of the Israeli
army to retaliate in case of a possible attack of Hamas in the future along with a
feasible occupation of Gaza, it is likely to face criticism from the global
community. In conclusion, the author points out that yet the agreement between
the two parties is reached, Hamas will endeavor to rebuild its stockpiles and get
ready for a future assault.
From my perspective, the article provides a plausible scenario concerning the
Palestine-Israel ceasefire agreement, emphasizing the associated risks, which I
found helpful for examining the current complexities of the conflict.
