Polar and Rectangular Form of a Complex Number

Class Notes
To express a complex number in rectangular form, we give the coordinates
in the form 𝒙 + 𝒚𝒊, where x is the coordinate on the real axis and y is the
coordinate on the imaginary axis.

To express a complex number in polar form, we give coordinates

in the form 𝒓(𝒄𝒐𝒔𝜽 + 𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝜽) where r is the radius
(hypotenuse of the right triangle) and 𝜽 is the angle of rotation in
standard position. 𝜽 should be between 0 and 𝟐𝝅 radians or
0 and 360 degrees.

Often, 𝒓(𝒄𝒐𝒔𝜽 + 𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝜽) is abbreviated 𝒓 𝒄𝒊𝒔 𝜽. Plot by dilating to the radius and rotating to the angle.

How to Convert Rectangular Coordinates to Polar Coordinates

𝒚 𝒚
|𝒙 + 𝒚𝒊| = 𝒓 = √𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 and 𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝜽 = 𝒙 → 𝛉 = 𝐭𝐚𝐧−𝟏 (𝒙)
Example: Convert 𝟑 + 𝟒𝒊 to polar form and plot (use degrees).

Example: Convert −𝟐 + 𝒊 to polar form and plot (use radians).

Example: Convert 𝟏 − 𝒊√𝟑 to polar form and plot (use radians).

How to Convert Polar Coordinates to Rectangular Coordinates
𝒙 = 𝒓(𝒄𝒐𝒔𝜽) and 𝒚 = 𝒓(𝒔𝒊𝒏𝜽)
so 𝒙 + 𝒚𝒊 = 𝒓(𝒄𝒐𝒔𝜽) + 𝒓(𝒔𝒊𝒏𝜽)𝒊
Don’t forget to put i next to y!!
𝝅 𝝅
Example: Convert 𝟐(𝒄𝒐𝒔 𝟔 + 𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝟔 ) to rectangular form and plot.

𝟐𝝅 𝟐𝝅
Example: Convert 𝟑𝒄𝒐𝒔 + 𝟑𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏 to rectangular form and plot.
𝟑 𝟑

Example: Convert 𝟓(𝒄𝒐𝒔 𝟐𝟕𝟎° + 𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏 °𝟐𝟕𝟎) to rectangular form and plot.

𝟕𝝅
Example: Convert 𝟒 𝒄𝒊𝒔 to rectangular form and plot.
