Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Today’s generation is not impossible to conduct E-learning/teaching

because of the continuously innovating technology. Education students needs

to understand the point of view of E-learning. E-learning system is a

relatively new concept as a medium of learning by means of using video

related apps/system, text, graphics, animations, sites, virtual classrooms,

etc. These virtual modes of learning are alternative to the traditional

teaching because of the plague that continuously contagious to humans

across the world.

"A system that uses internet technologies to provide information to

students with interaction through computer interfaces" is what e-learning

is defined as. Since the mid-1990s, the word "e-learning" has been

extensively used in the field of education. E-learning is defined by some

researchers as the delivery of educational materials through electronic

media such as the internet, satellite broadcast, audio/video tape,

interactive television, and CD-ROM (Engelbrech 2005). Others define e-

learning as web-based learning that incorporates web-based communication,

collaboration, knowledge transfer, and training to enhance the value of

people and organizations (Kelly & Bauer, 2004). With the spread of COVID-

19, a novel corona virus disease, many nations have demanded the closure of

all educational institutions. Since they had to protect their students from
viral exposures, which are likely in a highly socializing student

community, educational institutions have come to a halt. Due to the

spreading contamination, schools in China and a few other affected nations

were closed in early February 2020. Nearly 75 countries, however, had

enacted or announced the closing of educational institutions by mid-March.

As of the 10th of March, one out of every five pupils are out of school due

to COVID-19 school and university closing around the world. According to

UNESCO, 186 countries will have implemented nationwide closures by the end

of April 2020, affecting 73.8 percent of all enrolled students (UNESCO,

2020).

Students should use technology to overcome scheduling and location

obstacles to learning. Students' engagement focuses on how much time and

effort they devote to online learning activities in order to accomplish the

desired learning outcomes. Despite the advantages of online learning,

making it easier for students to learn on these platforms remains a

challenge (Panigrahi, et al., 2018). Technology has had a significant

impact on almost every aspect of our lives, including education. Online

courses have grown rapidly in popularity in recent years as a result of

their numerous advantages for both students and teachers. When compared to

conventional learning, online learning provides students with access to

education regardless of where they are. Furthermore, online learning

promises to provide the most appropriate course pacing for each student's

needs. While this type of education benefits both students and instructors,

it does have some drawbacks, so it is not suitable for everyone. In recent

years, the online learning platform industry has exploded. The ease with

which a student can learn has made the E-learning platform a promising

method of comprehending research materials. It has grown in popularity

among learners with a hunger for knowledge. Learning new skills is the only

way to stay ahead in today's ever-changing world. Continuous learning is

the best way for teachers and individuals with full-time jobs to improve

their skills. Since the dawn of the digital era, an increasing number of e-

learning platforms have been competing to provide better solutions for

their students. The E-learning community has benefited from the competition

between platforms because there are so many different choices to choose

from, as well as so many different ways to learn. The provision of

educational content (electronic) to the recipient via media based on the

computer and its networks in such a way that allows active interaction with

this content and features, as well as with its peers, only simultaneously

or not synchronized, and the possibility of completing this learning in

time and place and at the speed that the recipient desires (Gorbunova et

al., 2017).

In recent years, as distance education has grown, the educational

content delivery approach has shifted to emphasize the use of computer

technology in the learning environment. E-learning (electronic learning)

developed into higher education as Internet technology became more widely

used. Distance education was created as a result of educators following the

growth of technology to study and employ new techniques to minimize

geographic constraints in traditional education. E-learning has emerged as

a viable option for delivering instruction. The growth of e-learning has

been aided by the use of computers and electronic media.

Increased accessibility, advances in communication technologies,

increasing student demand for online flexible or distance learning,

institutional need to maintain a competitive offering of diverse learning

platforms, and positive financial gains to institutions and students are

just a few of the factors driving the rapid growth of online learning (Ali

et al., 2004)

People are increasingly turning to the Internet to find answers to

their questions or to learn new skills. When we write about the Internet

and education, the term "eLearning" comes to mind. E-learning is a broad

term that refers to a variety of teaching and learning activities conducted

using electronic media such as computers or web-based platforms. E-learning

is not only distance learning; it can also take place in face-to-face

courses. The adoption of E-learning in education, particularly for higher

educational institutions, has many advantages and benefits, and e-learning

is considered one of the best methods of education due to its numerous

advantages and benefits. Benefits and advantages obtained from the adoption

of e-learning technologies into schools have been presented by many studies

and authors (Klein and Ware, 2003). According to some research, one of the

benefits of e-learning is its ability to concentrate on the needs of

individual students. One of the benefits of e-learning in education,

according to Marc (2000) in his book review on e-learning techniques for

providing knowledge in the digital age, is that it focuses on the needs of

individual learners as an essential factor in the educational process

rather than the needs of teachers or educational institutions. According to

a review of literature, The following are some of the advantages of

eLearning adoption in teaching. When time and location are taken into

account, it is adaptable. Every student has the option of choosing the

location and time that is most convenient for him or her. According to

Smedley (2010), the implementation of e-learning offers organizations, as

well as their students or learners, with a great deal of flexibility in

terms of when and where learning information is delivered or received, E-

learning improves the efficiency of skills and qualifications by allowing

easy access to a vast amount of information. It also allows learners to

form relationships through the use of discussion forums. By doing so, e-

learning helps to remove obstacles to involvement, such as the fear of

speaking with other students. Students are encouraged to engage with one

another through e-learning, as well as to exchange and respect various

points of view. eLearning facilitates dialogue and strengthens the bonds

that support learning. According to Wagner et al. (2008), e-Learning

provides additional opportunities for students and teachers to communicate,

E-learning saves money because it eliminates the need for teachers or

learners to travel. It's also cost-effective because it provides learning

opportunities to a large number of people without requiring a large number

of buildings.

Individual learner differences are still taken into account in e-learning.

Some students, for example, tend to focus on certain sections of the course

while others are willing to review the entire course. E-learning may help

compensate for a lack of academic personnel, such as instructors or

professors, facilitators, lab technicians, and so on. Self-pacing is

possible in e-Learning. The asynchronous method, for example, allows each

student to study at his or her own pace and tempo, whether slow or fast. As

a result, it boosts happiness while lowering stress (Codone et al.,2001)

The above-mentioned benefits of e-learning have been summed up by

Holmes and Gardner (2006), who note that e-ability learning's to evaluate

students or learners as they learn, while also improving their educational

experiences, by way of interactivity suitable for community education,

cultural diversity and globalization, and eradicating geographical and

temporal limits. The most important feature of e-learning in education,

according to them, is that it focuses on the students or learners (Holmes

and Gardner, 2006).

Significance of the Study

This study was conducted to determine the Perception and Benefits of

E-Learning to education students in Nueva Ecija University of Science &

Technology. Findings of this study will be of importance to the school

supervisors, principals, program coordinators, and teachers.

Benefiting the study are the various sectors as follows:

developed in this study would be useful to them in their future careers. It

will also encourage them to appreciate and pursue their course.

Conceptual Framework

ELearning or online learning are terms used to describe web-based

learning. It effectively entails studying online through various courses

available on the internet. Emails, live seminars, and videoconferencing

will also be done over the internet. This allows all members to express

their opinions on a given subject and then debate it further. They often

have static websites, such as written course content, for the convenience

of all participants. One of the most important benefits of using the

internet is that most web pages contain hyperlinks that will carry you to

another website, enabling you to access a large array of information.

You don't have time to actually take lectures at a university. That

may have been a big concern in the past and you wouldn't have learned how

to tackle it, so that is no longer the case. You can train from the comfort

of your own home with the many online courses available. No more getting up

early to attend lectures or dealing with the annoying classmate. Now you

can choose your path in peace and at your leisure. A standard web-based

course will include course content, a schedule, a bulletin board, a

curriculum map, teaching resources such as posts, slides, and handouts,

correspondence through discussion boards and email, summative and formative

evaluations, student management resources such as reports, logs, and

student monitoring, and helpful links to external and internal websites.
