Rationale

My name is Nigel Washington Edwards, and I chose Music as a subject as it is

something that I have always been interested in. I can sing , play the : piano ,

Bass guitar , Recorder , Drum set and I enjoy both the practical aspects and theory.

I would like to pursue a career in music production and composition in the future

and I believe that doing CSEC Music is one of the steps I can take to achieve that. I

chose to analyze the advertisements as I am interested in how music is used to

promote products and services. I chose advertisements that I am familiar with and

that are well known.

Background Information

An advertisement (ad) is a message or communication designed to promote a

product, service, brand, or idea to an audience. Advertisements aim to persuade or
inform people, encouraging them to take specific action, such as buying a product,
signing up for a service, or supporting a cause.

Ads can appear in various forms, including:

 Print ads (newspapers, magazines, posters)

 Digital ads (social media, websites, search engines)
 TV and radio commercials
 Billboards and outdoor advertising
 Email marketing
 Sponsored content or influencer marketing

Advantages
 Increases Sales & Business Growth – Ads help businesses attract customers,
leading to higher sales and revenue.
 Creates Brand Awareness – Helps establish and maintain a brand’s presence
in the market.
Disadvantages
 Can Be Expensive – Running ads, especially on TV or online platforms, can
be costly.
 May Be Misleading – Some ads exaggerate product benefits, leading to false
expectations.

Musical advertisements enhance brand memorability and product recall by

activating memory through sound. As a melody progresses, it narrows potential
matches in memory, making the ad more recognizable. Music in ads triggers
action, evokes emotions, and boosts sales effectiveness.

Black History Month has long been a point of debate, with some arguing that it is unnecessary in
modern society. Critics claim that Black history should be integrated into general historical
narratives rather than highlighted separately. However, dismissing Black History celebrations as
unnecessary ignores their significance in education, representation, and the ongoing fight for
equality. Black History Month remains crucial because it acknowledges the overlooked
contributions of Black individuals, fosters cultural awareness, and addresses historical injustices.
First, Black History Month serves as an essential platform to acknowledge the contributions of
Black individuals that have been historically marginalized. Throughout history, many Black
pioneers have made groundbreaking contributions in fields such as science, politics, literature,
and civil rights. Figures like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King Jr.
played key roles in shaping history, yet their achievements were often overlooked in mainstream
education. Celebrating Black history ensures that these contributions are recognized and valued
within society.
Second, Black History celebrations promote cultural awareness and appreciation. In societies
where racial and ethnic diversity is increasing, understanding different cultures is essential for
fostering unity and respect. By dedicating time to highlight Black history, individuals from all
backgrounds gain insights into the struggles and triumphs of the Black community. This
knowledge helps combat stereotypes, reduce ignorance, and encourage cross-cultural dialogue,
ultimately contributing to a more inclusive society.
Finally, Black History celebrations address historical injustices that continue to affect Black
communities today. Systemic racism, discrimination, and socio-economic disparities have roots
in historical oppression. By reflecting on past injustices, Black History Month encourages
dialogue on racial inequality and promotes continued efforts toward social justice. Without
intentional recognition of these issues, society risks ignoring the lessons of the past and allowing
discrimination to persist unchallenged.
In conclusion, the claim that Black History celebrations are unnecessary dismisses their crucial
role in education, cultural appreciation, and social justice. Black History Month is not about
exclusion or division; rather, it is an opportunity to honor a rich and significant part of history
that has been long neglected. Until Black history is fully and fairly integrated into mainstream
education and societal consciousness, dedicated celebrations will remain necessary to ensure
