Bridge Analysis and Design Calculations

The document outlines the load calculations for bridge analysis, including dead, live, wind, and seismic loads, along with structural analysis methods for support reactions and shear forces. It details the design processes for deck slabs and girders using the Limit State Method, as well as pier and foundation design considerations. The calculations serve as a basis for bridge design, emphasizing the need for refinement through site-specific conditions and software analysis.

Bridge Analysis and Design Calculations

1. Load Calculations

1.1 Dead Load (DL)

• Self-weight of the bridge components:

o Deck slab: w=25 kN/m3×tw = 25 \text{ kN/m}^3 \times t
o Girders: Wg=Volume×DensityW_g = \text{Volume} \times \text{Density}
o Parapet walls and other elements: Given weight per unit length.

1.2 Live Load (LL)

• Consideration of vehicular loads as per AASHTO/IRC standards.

• Load distribution using influence lines.
• Impact factor applied: I=1.3I = 1.3 (Example value, depends on standards).

1.3 Wind Load (WL)

• Wind pressure P=0.613×V2P = 0.613 \times V^2 (V = wind speed in m/s)

• Horizontal force = P×AP \times A, where A = exposed area.

1.4 Seismic Load (EQ)

• Base shear calculation: V=CsWV = C_s W

• Coefficient CsC_s depends on soil type, zone factor, and importance factor.

2. Structural Analysis

2.1 Support Reactions

Using equilibrium equations: ∑Fx=0,∑Fy=0,∑M=0\sum F_x = 0, \sum F_y = 0, \sum M = 0

2.2 Shear Force and Bending Moment

Using: V=wL2V = \frac{wL}{2} M=wL28M = \frac{wL^2}{8} (For simply supported beam)

For continuous spans: Moment distribution method or FEM analysis.

3. Beam & Slab Design

3.1 Design of Deck Slab

Using Limit State Method:

• Effective depth: d=MRbdd = \frac{M}{Rbd}

• Reinforcement: As=M0.87fydA_s = \frac{M}{0.87fy d}

3.2 Design of Girders

• Check flexural strength: Mu≤MrM_u \leq M_r

• Shear check: Vu≤VrV_u \leq V_r

4. Pier and Foundation Design

4.1 Pier Design

• Axial load: P=∑WP = \sum W

• Bending check under lateral loads.

4.2 Foundation Design

• Bearing capacity check: qall=PAq_{all} = \frac{P}{A}

• Depth check against settlement and sliding.

Conclusion

These calculations provide a foundation for bridge design, subject to refinement based on site-
specific conditions and detailed numerical analysis using software like SAP2000 or MIDAS
Civil.
