NDEJJE UNIVERSITY

FACULTY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT

YEAR I, SEMESTER II 2024/2025
RESEARCH METHODS COUSEWORK QUESTIONS FOR CLASS PRESENTATIONS
Mini Case
In Uganda, print advertising is an important element for companies, especially the ones that sell
fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and services. Huge budgets are lined at the start of the
year to publicize products, announce promotions and run consumer campaigns. In 2019, over
445 billion shillings was spent by the 20 top advertising companies in Uganda on advertising
using different types of adverting.
MTN Uganda, took the top spending position splashing over 29 billion on ads, followed by their
archrivals Airtel who spent two billion less at 27 billion. According to a new media report by
Ipsos-Synovate (formerly Steadman-Synovate) titled the Uganda All Media and Products Survey
(UAMPS), MTN spent about Shs. 29 billion on advertising. MTN Uganda advertises using
visual media through the television, Audio through the radio and print media through
newspapers, magazines and bill boards. Advertising problems often have far-reaching effect on
any company and if neglected can cause a great threat to the continued existence of the company,
the use of advertising is effective to boost firm’s sales performance. This is evidenced from the
usage of advertising and the expenditure on advertising which has been increasing over the years
(Giles, 2020).
Despite Print advertising representing one of the oldest and widespread forms of media, mainly
consisting of newspapers, billboards and magazines, its contribution to sales performance is not
known. MTN Uganda Limited still spends a sizable amount of its marketing budget on print
media adverts by frequently printing advertisements of its products and services with the aim of
increasing its sales performance. It is however, not clear how much print advertising contributes
to the sales performance of MTN Uganda in terms of sales revenue, market share and customer
acquisition. The sales team of MTN are always on their toes to fulfill their sales targets and
consequently achieve sales performance. The company specifically advertises using,
Newspapers, Magazines and Billboards (MTN Uganda, Annual report, 2020).
