Unit 1 Fact Sheet Rhys Thomas-Berry

Product Process

The production process refers to the process and stages in the making of a media product.
The three stages include:
● Pre-Production which includes the planning of the production.
● Production stage is the stage where we produce the materials.
● Post-Production this is the editing and the construction of the production

Magazine production Equipment and Software

There are a few things needed to produce a magazine which include:

● A DSLR camera
● Photoshop
● Desktop Publishing Software like InDesign or Quark
● A computer

DSLR Camera
A DSLR Camera is a digital single-lens camera that
automatically enhances photographs to make them
nicer and it allows the user to take pictures of what
ever they want to and for it to come out in a clear
focus and high quality. The camera is used for taking
pictures of what the user wants and these can be
transferred onto a computer to be saved on there. It
is needed for magazines as the cover shots and the
pictures seen through them are taken with the
camera meaning without one the magazine would
have no pictures as there would not be any
photographs which all magazines need.

The camera costs £308.00

● Adobe Photoshop

Adobe photoshop is a software used

for the manipulation of photographs to
enhance photographs or add items
that aren’t in the photograph to make
them seem more in depth. It is used to
make photographs look better and
more eye-catching to an audience. A
magazine would most likely use
photoshop as they can enhance their
images to make them look better and
beat their competing companies, this would be effective for a magazine as they can
attract more of an audience.

● Desktop Publishing Software e.g. in design and Quark

Desktop publishing is the creation of documents using a dedicated software that can
allow you to edit your projects and this can be completed by outlining text and edit
the view of the canvas. This allows the user to design graphics and text like
documents helping their work to suit them and what they intend to do. This is used
frequently in magazine production as it can make the articles that are featured in the
magazine to your own personal style and what you prefer to do, this enables you to
move images around design graphics for the page and moving text to create the
page more visually engaging.

● Computer
A computer is an electronic device which accesses a wifi system and used for
multiple purposes such as working, researching,
personal use and data storage. In the media industry,
computers are used when creating articles which are
featured in the magazine designing process and and
will often be used for saving photographs which may
be used throughout the magazine in other articles.

Magazine Production Process

Pre-Production - contents
In the content stage of Pre-Production. The editorial team decide which writers are
assigned to which stories and then those writers must go and make the necessary
research for the story they are writing about. Overall, this stage is essential because it is
where all the decisions are made and roles and articles are established.

Pre-Production - Flat planning
During the Flat planning, the editorial team create a plan called the ‘flat plan’ which is a
page by page plan of a magazine, it helps to construct the order of the magazine and
overall the format of the magazine. It is vital to use when creating a media
article/magazine as it allows the editors to easily adjust the structure of content and
identify what images and text may be needed. It helps to ensure that the following stages
of the magazine production are organised.

Production
At this stage of the process, the team and the writer team conduct research and the
article id written, photoshoots will be arranged and conducted as they will also arrange the
archived images that are needed to be saved for upcoming articles.

Production - Writing and Sub-editing
In this stage of the process, the sub-editors check through all articles and intend to find
small mistakes with spelling or grammar and the length to see if it is too short or too long.
If the sub-editors find mistakes they will ask the writer to fix these but if they are not major
they may do it themselves to make sure the quality of the article is extremely good and
ready for publishing. They will mostly use desktop publishing software to fix the layout,
content and images. They may use premade templates to ensure that the article is to the
best standard possible and up to standard with the house style.

Post Production - Checking printers proof
The final pages will be sent to the publishers and they will then give the articles a final
mock-up which then grants the editors approval to move to the next stage of the magazine
process. This basically means that all the work is checked over and the editors have done
a good job in checking and editing the work meaning it can be moved to the publishing
process.

Post Production - Completion and Distribution
This starts once they have gained the editor’s approval for the magazine to be published.
Final copies are printed and assembled and sent to distribution companies which send the
copies to the retailers where it is then sold to the customers.

Magazine Production Roles

This is the production role panel for the
BBC Top Gear magazine:
Magazine Job Roles
Photographer:
A photographer for a magazine will curate a gallery of images that the publication may use in
the future. They help to assist the publication in developing a visual storyline of content. A
photographer will also help the publication in creating and maintaining a digital asset library
and they will also collaborate with different teams to create a photography shoot project.

Sub-editor:
A sub editor for a magazine will edit and copy articles written by reporters or feature writers
to help remove spelling mistakes, the format of writing and any grammatical errors that need
editing before publication. They rewrite material so that the writing flows and reads better
and will adhere to the house style of the particular publication that is being used.

Copy editor:
A copy editor for a magazine will make sure that the text is in the right style for the audience
it is intended to broadcast to. They will also apply a house style to the content which will be
created by more than one writer. A copy editor will work closely with reporters, designers
and the production staff. This is to ensure they can cover all legal and ethical issues such as
breach of copyright. They check over the magazine before it gets sent to the printers to be
prepared for distribution.
