3342_week 6 Lesson 1 Ss3

The lesson focuses on energy quantization, specifically energy levels in atoms, for SS3A and SS3B students. Key objectives include explaining energy quantization, stating the quantum energy equation, and solving related problems. The lesson involves discussions, experiments, and applications of concepts such as ground state and excited energy levels, with an assignment on the photoelectric effect for further study.

Teacher’s Roles: Ask the students the following question
1. What is quantization of energy?
Students Roles: Respond to the teachers question

Step 2: Experimentation / Exploration:

Mode: entire class
Teacher’s Role: The teacher use the chart to explain energy level in atom
Students Roles: The students listen and observe the activities.

Step 3: Discussion:

Student Roles: The students answers the question, by contributing their own idea to
the discussion. The teacher then summarize the lesson topic as following
QUANTISATION OF ENERGY.

Introduction to quantum physics.

Max Planck studied the energy of radiation emitted by a black body and discovered
that the energy is not continuous but released in small units or packets, which he
called quanta. A quantum of electromagnetic energy is proportional to the frequency
of the source. It is also called wave packet or photon. A quantum of energy is given

by E = hf

Where E=quantum of energy,

f= frequency of the electromagnetic radiation and

h = Planck’s universal constant (h = 6.6*× 10-34 JS).

Quantization of energy implies that energy is not continuous as stated by classical

physics but rather released in small units called quanta.

ENERGY LEVELS IN ATOMS.

Electrons, according to Bohr, can stay in different orbits. These orbits are also called
energy levels. The lowest orbit corresponds to the first principal quantum number
(n = 1). The electron in this orbit is stable and does not radiate energy. Therefore the
energy level corresponding to these orbits is called ground state energy (E0).

Energy Levels in Atoms:

Emission Spectra of Hydrogen gas.

Excited energy levels.

When electrons absorb enough energy they jump to higher energy levels. The higher
energy levels are called excited energy levels. The first excited energy level (E1)
corresponds to the second principal quantum number (n=2). The Third excited
energy level (E2) corresponds to n=3 and so on.
Electrons occupying the excited energy levels are said to be excited. Excited energy
levels are unstable and tend to become stable by losing excess energy. They lose
energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation when they jump or fall to lower
energy levels, the energy radiated is given by.
Ei – Ef = hf
The difference between the two energy levels determine the size of the energy
released i.e the frequency.

Excitation and ionization energies.

Excitation energy is the minimum energy absorbed by an electron to move it to
higher energy levels. Ionization energy is the energy absorbed by an electron to
move it completely out of the atom.
Ionization energy = E∞-En = O- En
An electron in the ground state needs 13.6eV to free it from the attractive force of
the nucleus.

APPLICATION: The teacher then guide students to mention the application of the
photo electric effects such as
1. Quantization is important in communication
2. It is essential for digital signal processing (DSP) as it allows the storage,
transmission and manipulation of signals using digital devices.
EVALUATION:

Teacher’s Role: Ask the student’s to solve the following question
1. Explain energy quantization
2. State quantum energy formula
