Application Form
Thank you for applying to United World Colleges through the UWC National Committee of Morocco for entry in
2023.

UWC candidates have a wide range of personalities and passions. We want you to tell us about your
motivations, your values and what you might gain from a UWC education and the International Baccalaureate.
For each of the following questions there is no right or wrong answer, but we do expect your answers to be
honest and true to who you are. Your answer should tell us about your ideas, interests, and experiences in
your own words.

Please note that answers can be written in Arabic, English, French, or Spanish. The language in which your
application will be completed will not affect the way the committee views your candidacy.

Please answer the 3 questions below with no more than 250 words.

8 / 15
What does it mean for you to be Moroccan?

Morocco is like a flipped coin…

How can I define my nationality in just a few words? How can I write about a feeling of belonging to a proud nation
with a deep history and stronghold to its foundation…While also sometimes not feeling good in your own skin and
start to actually question your own origines.

As a Muslim country, Morocco is tolerant, yet holds traditional culture with strong values. While on the outside it can
seem like any other African nation, Morocco has greatly involved considering its past state. However I consider it
like a coin with two divergent sides, the bright and cheerful one with flourishing citizen, alongside a better security,
educational systems and city management, with a promising future, and there a darkside in the flipped side of the
coin, where reside more than half of Morocco’s population, unfortunate citizen who don’t have enough means to
sustain themselves and insure education, security, etc, in a fastly privitized Morocco and no form of aids was
provided to help them from misery. As a native I am accepting these two sides, and I thrive to bring light to the
shadow of the coin.

Being a Moroccan is also to be willing to help your community regarding the numerous issues it is currently facing in
order to ensure a better future for the next generation. Knowing when and how to take action, while more
importantly being proud of your roots and love it no matter the circumstances.

Which UWC value resonates most with you? How does it translate into your daily life?

UWC Values: uwc.org/educationalmodel

UWC has a very unique strategy that doesn't target a strong educational foundation only, but also creates a
complete person through its two year program by abiding by seven values that are different, but at the same time

have the same purpose.

Among all these principles, there is one that i connect to the most, it is not a question related to preference but it
resonate more with my own lifestyle, which is essentially centered around independence and self discipline,
whenever its related to my social life, spiritual one or even my educational path, embracing challenges and taking
risks by yourself, proves that you are competent enough to lead other people and to size opportunities giving to
you.

Thus, I highly believe that taking the initiative is in itself a form of self-empowerment, while I agree that motivation is

key to keep going on your journey but discipline is what keeps growing .

The sixth value strongly relates to my daily life as I thrive, everyday, to educate myself in taking personal initiative
while giving back in various domains such as my passions, hobbies, studies, in which I am currently involved and
look forward to evolving. At the end of the day, the journey can not be savored without the challenge that kept you
from reaching the end of your path. Without risks, there would be no opportunities, since they are two sides of the
same coin.

10 / 15
How will you benefit from UWC? How will UWC benefit from having you?

Try to go beyond the obvious and focus on how this personally relates to your story and background.

My uncertain future has always terrified me, it reminded me of how much my life can alter by the choices I make. I
couldn't handle being lost anymore, and now, I thrive to discover myself, that led to me realizing that to do so I

should learn to connect more with others outside of my comfort zone.

And so, to take a step further in the journey of my own introspection, attending UWC will guarantee and amplify my
progress. This school provides better guidance as it covers numerous fields and areas while giving access to a
bigger perspective and a clear view regarding your chosen topics, it also helps you acquire a strong academic
foundation as well as a stronger understanding of yourself.
Adding to that while I can share my ideas, my judgment, and familiarity with various topics at hand, I learn more by
including other bright people of my age, passionate youth from very distinct backgrounds, which will enlarge my
scope of knowledge and allow me to return to my community with a fresh new picture and mindset.

I can not let this opportunity slide without even reaching out to grasp it; it wouldn't just help me pursue a path in
life, but it will certainly shape and impact me as a person just as much. As much as I will learn from you, I hope that
you can benefit from my culture, knowledge, ideas, and background.

Please choose ONE of the three questions below to answer. Do NOT answer all three questions. For these

questions, you can use up to 750 words.

What has been the hardest part of the pandemic for you? How has the pandemic changed your life?

11 / 15
Heart beating, people cheering, bodies tensing, just after the whistle, I felt goosebumps all through my skin as I

dived into the calm yet cold water. Every move reminded me of the long hours spent getting to this point. Every
breath and butterfly stroke made me realize how much my effort didn’t go to waste, and how close I was to reach
my goal. Feeling the water all over my body, taking away my sweat as I swam to the finish line with every last beat
of energy left in my muscles, caused me to go back to reality and finish this national swimming race.

For people, it may look like mere seconds, but it felt like hours handling this stressful environment. Indeed, dealing
with the pool's atmosphere and my own worries can be tiring in itself, as well as it keeps drifting me out of my focus.
However, I can not describe my joy when I qualified as one of the five finalists nationally in the butterfly stroke.
Yet, all my happiness sank into the water I used to dive into when the pandemic came crushing my hope to dust,
and tearing my effort to shreds. That day, I felt like my hard work and sweat slipped away like air through my
fingertips, and tears of frustration fell down my cheeks. I saw my effort and hope crumble before my eyes as the
national swimming competition got canceled. Even now, while I'm sitting in this vaccination center that was once
the Olympic pool where I trained. I still hear all the cheering, the excitement and nervousness, the endless training,
the injuries, and the exhaustion that paid off in the end. While I'm sitting on the edge of, now, the empty
natatorium. The nostalgic memories flow into my head, like a courant, bringing along all the incredible sensations
that stroked my entire body while swimming and diving into the cold water.
With pools closing up, my training got delayed for two years and a half. And so, To keep my body in shape, I
played basketball during that time, and even with my natatorium opening, I still sustained my basketball practice.
Nevertheless, it didn’t seem the same, although I do feel excited when I am in the game, whether it is a friendly
one, or the championship, shooting the ball and marking points while playing with my teammate all along the
match, I didn’t feel as thrilled as I am swimming in the water, as competitive as I am with other swimmers of my

team, nor as sad if I ever quite one day.

My situation was frustrating to its core, so to feel more fulfilled and appease my dejection, I decided to volunteer in
numerous vaccination centers, since, While thousands of people are being hospitalized every day to eventually
suffocate from their own breath while oxygen tanks are being given to well-connected people and while death was
ravaging the country, some groups of people were propagating anti-vaccine conspiracy theories. Poisonous, divine
punishment, a machiavellian scheme to wipe out half the population… creativity was at its peak. As ideas travel
faster than light, 35% of the population abstained from getting vaccinated. In retrospect, this phenomenon caused
more deaths that could have been avoided. Thus, actions should be taken.
First was getting used to the environment by helping the medical staff with the organization process. Then
switching my focus to the patients by making them at ease and more familiar with the situation; asking about the
reason behind their worry, explaining the vaccination benefits and constituents, expanding on the impact of COVID
on the body, and the numbers of Morrocans severely impacted… That is how I felt accomplished and determined
to do even more.
As you can imagine, my hardest time through the pandemic was temporarily stopping my hobby, my only time to
relax and take a break, and most importantly, my only way out of my daily tiring, infuriating, and exhausting routine.

12 / 15
However, I never gave up on my dream of being on the podium. Even if this crisis halted my growth rate and my

training, my determination didn't falter. My persistence in pursuing my ambitions remained all these years, and as
I’m now back in the field, I won't let this opportunity fade without a win.

our house, my grandmother. My country, Morocco, when affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,
established the law of lockdown on March 19, 2020. Since that date, my grandmother whose 84
years old came to live with us; she suffers from a lot of pathologies (asthma, HTA, Diabete…) and
its medical file is too loaded imposing very heavy financial charges, that is why my parents are left
with additional expenses that impacted my family's finances significantly and therefore they are
