Instructions,

Answer the following questions, using Yorkland Structural Specifications for Drilled
Caissons 31 63 26 and Drawing S1-01.

All answers should be typed in MS Word and submitted as a PDF on


Brightspace.

1. What is the required concrete strength at 28 days for caissons?

The strength concrete for caissons at 28 days is 45 MPa

2. What company did the Soils Investigation report?

The soils report consultant was Shaheen & Peaker Limited

3. What is the liner used for?

The liner is used to prevent unwanted soil or water into the excavation and to allow
removal of any loose materials from the bottom and to allow inspection and testing
companies to be able to inspect the excavation. As per section 3.4.1 “Liner Installation”
on the Yorkland Structural specifications for drilled caissons.

4. When is the liner to be removed?

Liner is to be removed vertically from the excavation while concrete is in place, in


accordance with the reviewed procedures. When removing the liner, the concrete needs
to maintain a positive head in the liner to ensure the diameter of the shaft is not reduced

by earths pressure or any other reasons. As per 3.5.1-3.5.2 “Liner Removal” on the
Yorkdland Structural specifications.

5. What information needs to be recorded when a caisson is drilled?

As per 1.5.3 Allow ten (10) working days for the review of shop drawings and supply as
many copies for review and distribution as directed. Shop drawings shall be checked in
detail by the General Contractor before submission. Drawings which fail to meet this
requirement shall be returned marked NOT REVIEWED.
As per 3.3.4 Test Cassions, information of the nature of the soil and the amount6 of
water encountered at various levels.

6. How is the concrete to be poured into the caisson?

As per 2.1.1.1. Conform to the requirements of Section 03 30 00 for materials, mix


design, proportioning and submission for review. Design the mix for placement by
tremie or by hopper device which allows free fall down center of caisson, to provide the
strength indicated on the drawings. Use Type GU (10), Normal Cement.

As per 3.6.3 Concrete placement, the concrete must be poured so that the discharge
can be controlled to evenly spread in a uniform mixture over the whole area without
striking shaft sides, and to prevent segregation or voids or honeycombing.
