UNIT 2: SEQUENCE

2.1
NUMBER SEQUENCE
INTRODUCTION
In competitive exams various types of question on numbers are asked. To solve such questions you require a little common
sense. You must have clear-cut concepts regarding the terms “ascending order”, “descending order”, “preceded by”, “followed by”
etc. We first discuss meanings of “ascending order” ,“descending order” , “preceded by” and “ followed by” .
Ascending Order
Ascending order means arrangement from the smallest to the greatest. For example suppose we have to arrange the
following numbers in ascending order: 847, 9754, 8320, 571.
Ascending order will be as follows: 571, 847, 8320, 9754.
Descending Order
Descending order means arrangement from the greatest to the smallest. For example, arrange the following numbers in
descending order: 1971, 45321, 88715, 92547.
Descending order: 92547, 88715, 45321, 1971.
Preceded By
Preceded by means occurring immediately before in order or position. For example, in series 2, 4, 6, 8 …..., 6 is preceded
by 4, 8 is preceded by 6 and so on.
Followed By
Followed by means occurring immediately after in order or position. For example, “A is followed by B” means B follow A,
that means A comes first, B comes next.
Number Test
In these type of questions, a number, a set of numbers, a series of digits is given and the candidate are asked to find out
digits following certain given conditions.
Example 1: How many 5s are there in the following number sequence which are preceded by 7 and followed by 6?
7 5 5 9 4 57 6 4 5 9 8 7 5 6 7 6 4 3 2 5 6 7 8
(a) 1 (b) 2 (c) 3 (d) 4
Solution: (a), Here, 7 5 5 9 4 5 7 6 4 5 9 8 7 5 6 7 6 4 3 2 5 6 7 8
Here 5 is preceded by 7 and followed by 6
So, there is only one such 5.
Example 2: How many even numbers are there in the following series of numbers, each of which is preceded by an odd
number, but not followed by an even number?
5348971653298735
(a) Nil (b) 1 (c) 2 (d) 3
Solution: (d), There are three such even numbers 6, 2, 8 each of which is preceded by an odd number and not followed by an
even number.
5348971653298735
Directions: (3-4): Following questions are based on the five three-digit numbers given below:
519 364 287 158 835
Example 3: If the positions of the first and the third digits within each number are interchanged, which of the following will be
the third digit of the second lowest number?
(a) 9 (b) 4 (c) 7 (d) 5
Solution: (d), According to the question, after the position of the first and third digits interchanged, new numbers are 519 
915, 364  463, 287  782, 158  851, 853  358
So, second lowest number = 538 and it is actually 835
Hence third digit of the second lowest number = 5
Example 4: Which of the following is the difference between the second digit of the lowest and the highest of these numbers?
(a) 3 (b) 1 (c) 2 (d) 0
Solution: (c), According to the question, difference between the second digit of the lowest and the highest number = 5 – 3 = 2

CSAT by Rishi Bhargava

Example 5: The position of how many digits in the number 351462987 will remain unchanged after the digit are rearranged in
ascending order within the number?
(a) None (b) One (c) Two (d) Three
Solution: (c), Given number 3 5 1 4 6 2 9 8 7
After rearrangement 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Hence, 4 and 8 remain unchanged after the rearrangement.
Example 6: The positions of the first and the sixth digit in the number 5109238674 are interchanged Similarly, the positions of
the second and the seventh digit are interchanged and so on. Which of the following will be the third digit from the
right end after the rearrangement?
(a) 9 (b) 0 (c) 6 (d) 3
Solution: (b), Given number = 5109238674
According to the question, after interchanging the digits, new number = 3867451092
Hence, third digit from the right end = 0
Example 7: How many such 5s are there in the following number sequence each of which is immediately preceded by 3 or 4
but not immediately followed by 8 or 9?
3 5 9 5 4 5 5 3 5 8 4 5 6 7 3 57 5 5 4 5 2 3 5 1 0
(a) None (b) Three (c) Four (d) Five
Solution: (b), As you know, a number which comes after a given number is said to follow it while the one which comes before
the given precedes it.
Thus, the numbers satisfying the given conditions may be marked as follows:
3 5 9 545 53 5845 673575545 23 5 10
Clearly, there are five such 5s.
Example 8: In the series given below, how many 8s are there each of which is exactly divisible by its immediate preceding as
well as succeeding numbers?
28 3 8 2 4 8 2 4 8 6 8 2 8 24 8 3 8 2 8 6
(a) One (b) Two (c) Three (d) Four
Solution: (b), Clearly, we may mark such sets of 3 numbers, in which the middle number is 8 and each of the two numbers on
both sides of it is a factor of 8, as shown below:
28 3 8 2 4 8 2 4 8 6 8 2 8 2 4 8 3 8 2 8 6
So, there are two such 8s.
Example 9: In the series,
641228742153862171413286
How many pairs of successive numbers have a difference of 2 each?
(a) Four (b) Five (c) Six (d) Seven
Solution: (c), Clearly, the pairs of successive numbers having a difference of 2 can be shown as follows:
6412287 42 1 53 8621714 13 286
Thus, there are six such pairs.
Example 10: In the following series, how many such odd numbers are there which are divisible by 3 or 5, then followed by odd
numbers, and then also followed by even numbers.
12, 19, 21, 3, 25, 18, 35, 20, 22, 21, 45, 46, 47, 48, 9, 50,52, 54, 55, 56
(a) Zero (b) One (c) Two (d) Three
Solution: (c), We first highlight the odd numbers is the given series:
12, 19, 21, 3, 25, 18, 35, 20, 22, 21, 45, 46, 47, 48, 9, 50, 50, 52, 54, 55, 56
Of these, we underline those numbers which are not divisible by 3 or 5.
12, 19, 21, 3, 25, 18, 35, 20, 22, 21, 45, 46, 47, 48, 9, 50, 50, 52, 54, 55, 56
Next we underline the numbers which are not immediately followed by an odd numbers.
12, 19, 21, 3, 25, 18, 35, 20, 22, 21, 45, 46, 47, 48, 9, 50, 50, 52, 54, 55, 56
Finally, we underline the numbers who do not have an even number at the second place to their right.
12, 19, 21, 3, 25, 18, 35, 20, 22, 21, 45, 46, 47, 48, 9, 50, 50, 52, 54, 55, 56
Thus, there are 2 such numbers.
Example 11: The positions of the first and the second digits in the number 94316875 are interchanged. Similarly, the positions
of the third and fourth digits are interchanged and so on. Which of the following will be the third to the left to the
seventh digit from the left end after the rearrangement?
(a) 1 (b) 4 (c) 6 (d) None of these
Solution: (d), Changing the positions of the digits as mentioned, we get the number: 49138657.
The seventh digit from the left end of this number is 5.
The third digit to the left of 5 is 3.
Example 12: How many such pairs of digits are there in the number 531268947 each of which has as many digits between
them in the number as when they are arranged in descending order?
CSAT by Rishi Bhargava
(a) One (b) Two (c) Three (d) More than three
Solution: (d), The given number is : 531268947.
Arranging the digits in descending order, we get: 987654321.
We have the following pairs of digits, satisfying the given conditions.

Digits in Given Number Digits in Descending Order

5312 5432
3126 6543
12 21
1268 947 7654321
268947 765432
89 98
Thus, we have 6 such pairs, namely (5, 2), (3, 6), (1, 2), (1, 7), (2, 7) and (8, 9).
Example 13: If it is possible to form a number with the second, the fifth and the eighth digits of the number 31549786, which is
the perfect square of a two-digit even number, which of the following will be the second digit of that even
number?
(a) 1 (b) 4 (c) 6 (d) No such number can be formed
Solution: (b),The 2nd, 5th and 8th digits of the number 31549786 are 1, 9 and 6 respectively.
The perfect square of a two – digit even number, formed using the digits 1, 9 and 6 is 196. And, 196 = 142.
So, the required even number is 14. Clearly, its second digit is 4.
Example 14: If 3 is subtracted from the middle digit of each of the following numbers and then the positions of the digits are
reversed, which of the following will be the last digit of the middle number after they are arranged in descending
order?
589 362 554 371 442
(a) 1 (b) 2 (c) 3 (d) 4
Solution: (c),On subtracting from the middle digits, the numbers become:
559 332 524 341 412
Now, on reversing the positions of digits, we have:
955 233 425 143 214
Arranging these numbers in descending order, we have:
955 425 233 214 143
The middle number is 233 and its last digit is 3.
Example 15: How many numbers from 1 to 100 are there each of which is not only exactly divisible by 4 but also has 4 as a
digit?
(a) 7 (b) 10 (c) 20 (d) 21
Solution: (a),The numbers from 1 to 100 which are exactly divisible by 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56,
60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96, 100.
But each number should have 4 as its digit.
∴ The required numbers are 4, 24, 40, 44, 48, 64, 84.
Clearly, there are 7 such numbers.

Solution: (b), Given number: 7 3 5 4 6 1 2
Descending order: 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
Clearly, there are three such digits. Hence required answer is 2.
Note: This question can also be worded as given below: “How many such digits are there in the number 7354612
each of which is as far away from the beginning of the number as when the digits are rearranged in descending
order”?
CSAT by Rishi Bhargava
Example 12: ‘The positions of the first and the fifth digits in the number 84329517 are interchanged. Similarly, the positions of
the second and the sixth digits are interchanged, and so on. Which of the following will be the second element
from the right end after the rearrangement?
(a) 8 (b) 3 (c) 7 (d) 4
Solution: (b), After making the changes, we get the following arrangement of the digits: 95178432
Hence, the second digit from the right end is 3.
Example 13: If in the number 589463271 all the odd digits are first arranged in ascending order and then all the even digits
are arranged in ascending order, which digit will be second to the right of fifth digit from the right end?
(a) 4 (b) 5 (c) 9 (d) 2
Solution: (a), The rearranged number, according to the question, will be 135792468. Now, 2 nd to the right of 5th from the right
= (5 – 2 =) 3rd from the right, i.e. 4.
Example 14: If each of the odd digits in the number 6234518 is changed to the next even digit and the even digits are kept
unchanged, how many digits will appear only once in the new number?
(a) 4 (b) 5 (c) 9 (d) 8
Solution: (d), Given number: 6 2 3 4 5 1 8
New number: 6 2 4 4 6 2 8 Only 8 is the required digit.
Example 15: If it is possible to make a number which is the square of a two-digit odd number using the second, the fourth and
the sixth digits of the number 93217648 and using each only once, which of the following is that two-digit odd
number?
(a) 17 (b) 21 (c) 19 (d) 15
Solution: (c), Second, fourth and the sixth digits of the number are 3, 1 and 6. Using these digits only once we can make 361,
which is a perfect square number. Hence, our answer is 361 = 19.
Example 16: If 2 is added to the middle digit of each of the following numbers and the position of the remaining two digits in
each number is interchanged, which of the following will be the second number from the top after they are
arranged in the ascending order? 843, 219, 325, 437 and 562
(a) 368 (b) 754 (c) 932 (d) 285
Solution: (b), Here the five numbers are: 843, 219, 325, 437 and 562
When 2 is added to the middle digit of each of the above numbers, it becomes as follows:
863, 239, 345, 457 and 582
When the positions of first and third digits of each number are interchanged, the numbers become as follows:
368, 932, 543, 754 and 285
Now, when the numbers are arranged in ascending order their order becomes as follows:
285, 368, 543, 754 and 932
Hence, second number from top is 754 (a number formed by 437).
Example 17: These questions are based on the following set of numbers:
347 418 635 824 259
1. If 1 is added to the middle digit of each number and then the positions of the first and second digits are
interchanged and then the newly formed numbers are arranged in ascending order, which number will be
second from the top?
(a) 347 (b) 537 (c) 834 (d) 248
2. If the first and the third digits in each number are interchanged, which number will be the smallest?
(a) 814 (b) 824 (c) 259 (d) 735
3. If the first digit in each number is reduced by 1 and then its position is interchanged with the position of the
second digit, which number will be the largest?
(a) 427 (b) 274 (c) 345 (d) 519
Solution: 1. (a), Here the given numbers are: 347 418 635 824 259
Adding 1 to the middle digits, we get: 357 428 645 834 269
Interchanging the first and second digits, we get: 537 248 465 384 629
Now, if we arrange these in ascending order, the second from the top will be 537 (248, 384, 465, 537, 629)
which has been obtained from 347.
2. (b), Interchanging the first and the third digit, we get: 743 814 536 428 952
The smallest number now is 428, which has been obtained from 824.
Quick Method: Look for the least value of the third digits as after interchanging this will become the first digit.
3. (d), Reducing the first digits by 1, we get : 247 318 535 724 159
Interchanging the first two digits, we get: 427 138 355 274 519
Of these, 519 is the largest, which has been obtained from 259.
Quick Method: Reduction in first digit has no impact on our result. Look for the largest value of the second
digit as after interchanging this will become the first digit.
