Parent Homework Letter
Dear Parents,

Our class homework this year is a weekly page. You will get the homework
page on Monday, and it is due on Friday. The format is a menu type
format where the student can choose a few boxes to work on per night.
There are nine categories (boxes) on each page. The one-page format is
designed to cover many of the areas that are included in a special
education classroom without being overwhelming. Some of the skills will be
duplicated for reinforcement of the skill, such as name and birthday.
Other items will change weekly. This is NOT meant to be a page the
student completes alone. Many of the skills will encourage parent
involvement and interaction, which will also bring awareness to areas in
need of practice and instruction.

There is a note attached where you can leave me notes and let me know
what areas your child struggled with or what areas he or she did really
well with. I would love to hear from you!

There are some categories with three little boxes (see sample). These
boxes are for items that the student can practice more than once.
For example, if a student is to recite the days of the week, he or she
will check a box each night that this task is performed. Of course,
you can do it more than three times if you choose. Often times, the
students need frequent and consistent practice to retain
information. Be as creative as you like. J
Teacher Tips & Suggestions
If the student is not able to write, his or her name can be
written in a yellow highlighter for the student to trace.

There are TWO versions of this homework: Level A and Level

B. Level A is designed for those students who are not quite
writing yet or are emerging writers. It uses more visuals,
multiple choice, and some tracing/writing in moderation. Level
B is designed for the student who is able to write either
independently or with some guidance. Level B also has less
visuals for the emerging reader. Both levels may require
assistance with reading, depending on the student.

There are some categories with three little boxes (see

sample). These boxes are for items that the student can
practice more than once. For example, if a student is to
recite the days of the week, he or she will check a box each
night this task is performed. Of course, you can do it more
than three times if you choose.

We know as special educators that retention of information

is a challenge. The boxes provide multiple opportunities to
review a particular item. Parents will need to be shown how to
use this. I have included this information in the parent letter.
