• To know about the synthesis of epoxy resin
• To know about the chemical structure of epoxy resin
• Observe the physical properties of epoxy resin

Introduction
Epoxy resin is a viscous liquid resin classified in the group of synthetic resin which contains an
epoxide group in its chemical structure. It is characterized by its high adhesive properties (good
adhesion with reinforcement), high chemical resistance, better moisture resistance, excellent
mechanical properties, good fatigue resistance, low shrinkage, strong durability at low and high
temperatures, and high electrical resistance, which justifies its numerous uses in modern industries.
The epoxy resin having a transparent color is mixed with its suitable hardener (darker color) to
polymerize and get an irreversible material.[1]

Most common epoxy resins are produced from a reaction between epichlorohydrin (ECH) and
bisphenol-A (BPA), though the latter may be replaced by other raw materials (such as aliphatic
glycols, phenol, and o-cresol novellas) to produce specialty resins.
The epoxy resins can be obtained in either liquid or solid states. The two processes are similar.
Firstly ECH and BPA are charged into a reactor. A solution of 20-40% caustic soda is added to
the reaction vessel as the solution is brought to the boiling point. After the evaporation of unreacted
ECH, the two phases are separated by adding an inert solvent such as methyl isobutyl ketone
(MIBK). The resin is then washed with water and the solvent is removed by vacuum distillation.
The producers will add the specific additives to create a formula that lends special properties such
as flexibility, viscosity, color, adhesiveness, and faster curing, depending on a particular
application.[2]

Observation and Explanation

Synthesis of epoxy resin is a chemical process of organic chemical compounds. The most common
epoxy resins are based on reacting epichlorohydrin with Bisphenol A. This reaction transforms the
basic building blocks into a different chemical substance called Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, a
low-molecular resin commonly known as BADGE or DGEBA.
Epoxies come in liquid, solid, and semisolid forms and typically cure by a reaction with amines or
anhydrides. From the experiment, we got the viscous solution of epoxy resin which is a common
property. The color was light brown though some watercolor epoxy is exist.
There found a lot of properties of epoxy resin that are easily observable: Resistance to chemicals,
particularly in alkaline environments. Heat resistance. Adhesion to a variety of substrates. High
tensile, compression, and bending strengths.
Epoxy resin has good adhesion, curing shrinkage is small, curing does not produce gas, and has
good heat resistance, excellent solvent resistance, and creep to obtain a wide range of applications
in the adhesive, paint, and flux fields. It is also commonly used as fiber-reinforced composite resin
matrix.
